Battle Lines
Evan
Murmurs rippled through the gallery.
Instead, he forced stillness.
The lawyer continued, You admit to past drug use, anger issues, and a career built on instability. Touring. Press scandals. Women
Ive made mistakes. Evan didnt flinch. I wont pretend I havent. But Piper isnt one of them. Shes my anchor. My turning point. The day I became her guardian was the day I chose a different life.
He hesitated a single beat, and his eyes misted.
Then, with quiet resolve, he spoke again.
I remember the first night she came to live with me.
She cried so hard she couldnt breathe.
I didnt know how to comfort her.
I burned the mac and cheese. But I sat on the kitchen floor with her in my lap until she finally stopped shaking.
That night, she looked up at me and said, Are you staying?
And I knew I was. I am.
A long silence.
Then: No further questions.
Back at the defense table, Evan sat beside Jonah, heart thudding like a bass drum. His palms were slick with sweat.
Jonah leaned close. "You held your own up there. Better than I expected."
Evan gave a short laugh. "Thanks for the vote of confidence."
"Im serious," Jonah said. "I was skeptical when this all started. But youve shown us something. Youre not just fighting for Piper. Youre showing everyone who you are now."
Evan looked over at Sarah.
They were here. Together. That meant everything.
When the judge called for a brief recess, Evan rose and walked directly to Sarah. He could see the strain behind her expression, worry etched into every line of her posture.
I hate seeing you up there, she whispered.
You think I like it? he tried to joke, but it came out raw.
Youre doing amazing, she said.
He leaned in, pressing his forehead to hers. Im scared.
I know.
Im scared theyll say Im not enough. That shell win just because she gave birth to Piper.
Sarah pulled back, cupping his cheek. You are enough, Evan. And youre not doing this alone.
He swallowed the lump in his throat.
Later, during the lunch recess, Evan slipped into the restroom alone. He leaned over the sink, gripping the porcelain like it was the only thing keeping him upright. His reflection stared back at him, haunted, hollowed.
What if I lose her?
He splashed cold water on his face. Tried to shake the panic. Tried to breathe.
When the door creaked open, Sarah stepped in quietly.
I figured Id find you here, she said.
He couldnt speak. Just turned and folded her into his arms.
They stood in silence.
Youre not alone, she whispered.
And he believed her.
The second half of the hearing began with character witnesses. Sarah was called to the stand. Evan watched her walk past him, back straight, jaw set like she was walking into battle.
As she settled into the witness chair, Sarahs breath hitched. From the gallery, she glanced at Evan, and in a split second, her mind flashed back to the first time shed ever seen him.
Hed been gruff. Guarded. Distracted by Pipers tantrum and the paparazzi camped outside his penthouse. She hadnt expected tenderness.
But then he knelt on the marble floor and brushed tangled hair from Pipers face, whispering something that calmed the storm.
Hes always been trying, she realized. Even before he knew how.
And now she would help the court see it too.
She spoke clearly, passionately, about routines, sleepless nights, birthday breakfasts, scraped knees, bedtime stories, and jellyfish drawings. About how Piper clung to Evan during storms, and how she laughed in his arms.
She calls him her safe place, Sarah said, voice catching.
And what is your relationship to Mr. Stone? the opposing attorney asked.
Sarah met her gaze without flinching. Im his partner." Her voice rang with quiet conviction, and as the words settled in the air, her heart thudded once loud and certain. This was her truth, and she meant every word. In parenting. In life.
And if custody is awarded to the biological mother?
Sarahs eyes glistened. Then I worry for Piper. Because biology doesnt raise a child. Love does.
The gallery was silent. Even the judge seemed stiller.
Then, for the first time, Pipers biological mother was called to the stand.
Evan couldnt stop his heart from pounding. He hated her presence in that chair, but he needed to hear what she had to say.
I just want my daughter back, she said, tears lining her lashes.
The judge nodded. And where have you been, Ms. Ellis?
I was in treatment. Ive made changes. I deserve a second chance.
Do you currently have a job? the judge asked.
No. But Im looking.
Do you have stable housing?
Im staying with a friend.
Evans jaw tightened. She had no plan. No safety net. Just a plea.
Sarah looked at him, her hand finding his under the table.
At the next recess, Piper was led into a private room with crayons and a social worker. But she came bouncing out just as Sarah stepped into the hall.
Look! Piper beamed, holding up a drawing of a stick-figure family: Evan, Sarah, and herself with a giant sun overhead. I made this for the judge!
Sarah knelt. Its beautiful, sweetie.
Will it help?
I think it might.
Piper tilted her head. Will I still sleep in my dinosaur bed after this?
Evan, listening behind them, felt his chest squeeze.
He would make sure she did. No matter what.
And for the first time, he realized: the court wasnt blind. They saw it too.
After the court adjourned for lunch, Evan found Sarah standing in the hallway, hands clenched.
Im sorry, she said.
For what?
For letting them question who you are. What we have.
He touched her arm. You didnt let them. You showed them. You showed me .
Just then, the elevator dinged and out stepped Leo, his bands lead guitarist, in dark jeans and a leather jacket.
Leo? Evan blinked.
They stepped aside briefly, near the row of vending machines.
You didnt have to come, Evan said quietly.
I know. But I wanted to. Leo rubbed the back of his neck. Im not great with words. But Ive seen you at your worst, man. And Ive seen this change. Its real.
Evan stared at him. Thanks. Really.
Leo offered a half-smile, his gaze steady, but Evan caught the rare flicker of emotion behind it, a quiet kind of pride that hit harder than any applause or headline ever had. Besides, Sarah wouldve hunted me down if I didnt show up.
They both chuckled, the moment breaking the edge of tension.
Jonah, who had just returned from the hallway, nodded. Oh, Ill make room.
Inside the courtroom again, Leo took the stand.
Ive toured with Evan Stone for over a decade. Seen the best and the worst of him.
He paused. And Ive never seen him fight for something someone the way hes fought for Piper.
You say hes changed? the attorney prompted.
Leo nodded. He stopped living like a rock star. He started living like a dad.
And in that moment, Evan felt the band wasnt just a chapter behind him. They were part of this, part of the home he was building now. Not with noise and lights but with truth.
The judge called for closing remarks the next day.
Evan stood, one last time, before the court.
My name is Evan Stone, he said.
And I am Pipers dad, not by blood, but by every choice Ive made since the moment she came into my life.
I cant change the past. But Im fighting for her future.
Because shes not just a responsibility. Shes my reason.
He looked at Sarah. At Jonah. At Leo.
And then he sat.
Outside the courthouse, the air was thick with tension, cameras still snapping, distant sirens wailing, and the scent of exhaust and late summer heat hanging heavy. Reporters murmured behind barricades, their anticipation a low hum beneath the weight of what was to come. The ruling would come soon.
But in that moment, as Sarah took his hand, Piper ran toward them from the bench where Loretta waited, arms wide.
Daddy! she squealed.
He caught her, lifted her high, and spun her around.
Whatever happened next, Evan knew one thing for sure.
He was no longer the man who had to be convinced he was worthy.
He already was.
He looked at Sarah beside him.
No matter what happens in there he started.
She finished it. We stay together.
He nodded, kissed her forehead, then held Piper close.
Just then, his phone buzzed in his pocket.
A message from Jonah: Judge Reynolds will give a verdict tomorrow.
Evan looked down at Piper in his arms, her tiny fingers tangled in his hoodie. Whatever the verdict said, this little girl was his. In every way that counted.
He nodded once.
