13. Hearts Converge
Hearts Converge
Sarah
The cameras flashed like lightning.
Evan squeezed her hand, a silent thank you, a tether.
The cameras clicked louder, more aggressively, as one reporter barked, So this relationship is real, then? Not just a publicity stunt?
Sarah turned to Evan, searching his eyes.
And suddenly, she was back in time, remembering a college boyfriend who once made her hide when a camera came out. Remembering how shed learned to shrink her affections, to keep things private, palatable, safe.
But not now. Not with Evan.
He looked at her like she was his whole story.
And in front of a live-streamed audience, she leaned in and kissed him.
Her heart thudded like a war drum. A thousand cameras pointed their way, and for the first time, she didnt care. If this was a mistake, it was one she wanted to make again and again. His lips tasted like conviction. The city noise faded into nothing.
It wasnt for the cameras. It was for them.
It was real.
Later that afternoon, they escaped the courthouse chaos for a rare moment of peace. Jonah had suggested they lie low until the ruling was finalized the next day. Instead, Evan suggested something radical: Lets just go be a family.
So they packed a picnic.
In the middle of a quiet park, with checkered blankets spread out beneath them, Piper ran barefoot in the grass, her laughter the only soundtrack they needed.
She chased butterflies, giggling with abandon, claiming they were spun from glitter and wishes, as if catching one might grant her a secret dream.
Sarah watched, heart tight, overwhelmed by how innocence could still bloom in the midst of so much uncertainty.
Evan played guitar quietly under the shade, and Sarah watched, memorizing the way the light hit his profile.
Sarah! Piper called, breathless and beaming. Come see my fairy kingdom!
Sarah rose and ran toward her, laughing, letting herself be swept into the magic.
They built a fortress of sticks and daisies, and Piper crowned her Queen of the Garden.
Do you know what you are? Piper whispered in her ear.
What? Sarah whispered back.
Youre my favorite heart.
Sarah blinked against the sudden tears.
Later, Evan strummed a slow tune on the guitar that Piper calls "The Heart Song." Piper curled into Sarahs side, humming along off-key.
Daddy used to sing this when I had bad dreams, Piper whispered.
Evan smiled without looking up. And it still works, doesnt it?
Sarah closed her eyes and rested her cheek on Pipers head. For a second, she let herself believe this was forever.
That no judge, no signature, could undo what theyd built with love.
That night, after Piper was tucked beneath her dino-print comforter with her favorite stuffed dinosaur and a night light glowing pink beside her, Sarah lingered in the doorway.
She asked me to read that story about the moon again, Evan whispered behind her. You know, the one with the talking rabbit?
Sarah smiled softly. She always asks when shes scared.
Together, they stood in silence, watching the rise and fall of Pipers tiny chest.
She said she dreamt about a house by the sea, Sarah said. With all of us in it.
Evan nodded. Sounds like heaven.
They closed the door gently and padded into the kitchen.
Sarah sat at the table with her journal. It had been months since shed written in it.
Page after page filled with thoughts about Piper. About Evan. About the impossible swirl of guilt and longing.
She flipped to a clean page.
I didnt mean to fall in love with a man I thought Id have to leave.
I didnt mean to become someones mother without knowing how.
But here I am.
She paused, pen hovering over the page, and wrote another list beneath it:
What if the judge says no? What if Evan regrets me? What if Piper forgets me? What if this isnt enough?
And then she underlined the last line:
What if love is the only thing thats ever been enough?
Evan walked in, shirt wrinkled, hair tousled. He paused when he saw the journal.
Everything okay? he asked.
Sarah nodded. Just trying to make sense of the last few months.
He crossed the room and sat beside her, his thigh warm against hers. Let me help.
She turned toward him, her voice trembling. I never expected this life. Not with you. Not with her. But I wouldnt trade it for anything.
His hand covered hers. Then dont.
I just... Im scared that when this ends, when the court decides, youll go back to being the rockstar. And Ill just be a chapter you closed.
Evan cupped her face. Youre not a chapter. Youre the plot.
She kissed him softly, slowly, but full of everything she couldnt say.
Her lips trembled against his, pouring silent confessions into every press and pull.
She tasted his devotion, his fear, his fire, and offered hers in return.
Her fingers curled at his jawline, grounding them both in the unspoken promise that whatever storm waited beyond this moment, theyd face it together.
He deepened the kiss, his hands sliding over her hips as he pulled her into his lap. Her fingers threaded into his hair as their mouths collided again, hotter now, more urgent. She felt the ache between them, the need to escape the fear, the ache to lose themselves in each other.
He stood, cradling her, and carried her to the bedroom without a word. The door clicked softly shut behind them.
Clothes slipped away between kisses and whispered confessions. Skin met skin, soft and heated, as they unraveled together in the dark. His lips trailed down her throat, then lower, igniting sparks that made her gasp and cling tighter.
Her fingers mapped the hard planes of his chest, every ridge of muscle familiar now but never less electric. She moaned his name as his mouth explored her, devouring her softest places like hed waited a lifetime.
He worshipped her body every sigh, every shiver, every plea from her lips, drawing him deeper into her orbit.
She arched under his touch, breath catching, as he slid inside her with a groan that rumbled deep in his chest. They moved together in a rhythm that was both desperate and deliberate, chasing relief, then savoring every second of it.
His grip tightened as she trembled around him, her cry muffled against his neck. He followed her over the edge, burying his face in her hair as he came undone.
They didnt speak. They didnt need to.
They moved again, slower this time. Deeper. Worshipful. Like they were writing vows in each touch.
Later, tangled in each other, her head resting on his chest, she whispered, Even if it all falls apart we had this.
He ran his fingers down her spine. You know the first time I knew I loved you?
She turned her face to look at him.
You were sitting on the floor next to Pipers bed, half-asleep, humming off-key. And I thought, Shes not just saving Piper. Shes saving me.
Sarahs throat tightened. I dont want this to be over.
Its not, he said. If they try to take her, theyll have to fight me for both of you.
The next morning came with a phone call.
Sarah held her breath as Evan answered, her eyes fixed on him. His face went pale. His knuckles whitened around the phone.
When he hung up, he didnt speak.
Evan? she whispered.
He shook his head slowly. She won.
The words cracked something open inside her.
He stared at the wall behind her, and she saw a flicker in his expression, a shadow from long ago.
She left Piper in a crib with no food once, he said, voice low. I found her crying, soaked through, red-faced. And now she gets to call the shots?
His voice shook with restrained fury. She abandoned her. And the law is giving her a second chance she didnt earn.
No, she said. No, thats not right.
He didnt look at her. The judge ruled in favor of the biological mother. The transition period begins next week.
Sarah sat down hard in the nearest chair, the air rushing from her lungs like shed been punched.
Her hands gripped the edge of the seat as if bracing against the weight of what shed just heard.
The walls seemed to tilt, her vision tunneling around the image of Evan standing silent, stunned, across the room.
Piper. Gone.
It felt like the sun had blinked out.
Later, when Piper ran into the room, Sarah forced a smile.
Whats wrong? the little girl asked, sensing the shift instantly.
Sarah knelt, gathering her close. Were going to have to be very brave, okay?
Piper frowned. Why?
Because theres a change coming.
Will I still live here?
Sarah couldnt speak. Her throat burned.
Piper looked between them. But I belong here. I picked this family.
She opened her backpack and pulled out a drawing of stick figures with big hearts and sunshine. "I made this for the judge. You can show her. Maybe she forgot."
Sarahs breath caught. The innocence. The certainty. It shattered something inside her and stitched her back together in the same heartbeat.
Evan knelt beside them, voice hoarse. Were going to figure it out, baby. I promise.
Sarah met his eyes over Pipers head.
But even promises didnt feel steady anymore.
Sarahs eyes met Evans.
We wont give up, she said, her voice trembling but resolute. Not on her.
Evan wrapped his arm around them both. Then we start the appeal.
Piper looked up between them. Are we still my family?
They answered together.
Always.
