Chapter Six

Reid

Through the blanket, tiny claws dig into my left side, waking me to a biscuit making fiend.

I had forgotten what it was like to live with a cat.

We always had tiny felines around the house growing up, but since moving out to my own place, it’s been quite empty.

The kitten that Caroline dropped off at the office yesterday did indeed turn out to be a stray.

Since no one claimed her and the shelter was at capacity, we scheduled a spay surgery for tomorrow while I foster her at my place in the meantime.

Biscuits have now escalated to screams and I finally roll off the side of the bed and head out to the kitchen.

Dragging my feet from the carpet to the linoleum floor, I am quickly greeted with tiny gritty crumbs of pebble rock stuck to the bottom of my feet and see that Poppy has discovered her litter box…

it’s unclear whether it was used for its intended purposes or as a midnight sandbox.

She gets a wet food diet for now, with a couple of meds mixed in.

One thing is for sure, she should put on some weight soon with how quickly her tiny body scarfs it down.

I’ve hardly set the bowl on the floor before her whole face is in it.

The smells are overwhelming in here and I decide that cooking breakfast just isn’t going to happen either.

Plopping down on the couch, I take out my phone and open the DoorDash app to order something quick for delivery.

Scrolling, I reach for the remote and turn on the tv while I get comfy with a blanket.

Yes, I just moved from the bed to the couch, but no I am surprisingly not hungover.

I actually haven’t drank in over a year, but wow my body was just exhausted and clearly needed a rest day.

After scrolling through the slim options in this area and deciding on a McDonald’s breakfast, I place my order and browse social media in the meantime.

I guess I really am running with this whole cheat day thing.

I swipe down to see notifications from meaningless group texts and ridiculous memes sent by my friends.

I skim my emails, that are mainly just a bunch of ads and ignore them all because I just don’t have the brain capacity to read or form responses to anyone.

Instead, I open Youtube to enjoy my morning feed of short videos.

I don’t feed into all the bullshit drama channels, and honestly I don’t know what to even believe online anymore.

I’m starting to feel like a giant boomer with the amount of recent AI pics, videos, and articles that are getting harder to spot.

However, I am stopped mid-scroll as a TMZ post gets thrown on my feed.

“Hotel Mogul Grant Warren Spotted Leaving Nobu with a Hot New Bombshell Amid Divorce Rumors."

Wow… is that why she’s here now? Caroline got dumped by that douchebag when he decided to go for a younger woman. Already? How long has it even been? A couple years? Not that I’m keeping track or anything.

What an idiot. Does that man, if we can even call him that, really think he can do better than her? My mind floods with endless scenarios and I have so many questions, but am not even going to bother filling my head with the options right now. First, I need food.
