Chapter Seventeen

Reid

It’s been three agonizing weeks since I saw Caroline and I still can’t seem to shake the overwhelming feelings of longing and regret. How did I just set myself back so far? Clearly she doesn’t want to be here, now that she’s had a taste of the real world.

I never get a response back from my text about Poppy.

Scratch that plan, I guess. I’m really starting to wish I didn’t even send it because now I’m majorly overthinking things.

For now, I’m telling myself that she doesn’t think it’s me sending the messages and that she’s just not interested in pet ownership at this time of uncertainty in her life.

Luckily, it’s a busy surgery day at the clinic.

Most of our spay and neuter procedures occur on Tuesdays so I am booked to be scrubbed in the operating room all day.

It’s a good distraction, while I tell myself to snap out of it and move on.

I’ve done it once before after much worse, I can do it again after one drunken makeout with the same girl.

Yet here I am, completely unable to move on again.

Except this time… I’m older, I’m bolder, and I have nothing to lose, but her.

While I want to tell myself that I need to let it go and not get attached and possibly hurt again…

I also realize that it may hurt me more if I spend another ten years wondering what could have happened if I had actually fought for her.

So I decided to make a fool of myself, cut the shit, and reach out again.
