Chapter Forty Three

Caroline

“You know, seeing you punch Grant in the face like that was kind of hot.” I scoot closer to Reid on the bed.

“Oh yeah? Well let’s not get too used to that, shall we?” He smirks back at me.

“Just trying to see the bright side in the situation,” I shrug.

“The bright side is that you left him and found me instead,” he winks, matching my humorous optimism.

“I just wish I knew he was gone for good.” I let out a deep breath, shifting to a more serious tone. “I can’t relax knowing he could just show up like that and try to come for me again.”

“I don’t think he’s coming back here any time soon,” Reid reassures me, placing his hand on my knee. “He just wanted to show off, but I’m sure his ego is too bruised to show his face around here anymore.”

“You’re not wrong. Nothing hurts that man like a bruised ego.” I agree, feeling a little more at ease thanks to him. “I just don’t think anyone has ever had the balls to give him an actual bruise. Let’s hope that was the reality check that the whole family needed.”

“It’s been a long day. Come on, let’s get you to bed.” Reid suggests, pulling the covers back for us to lay down.

“I feel like I owe you a favor…” I say, climbing under my fuzzy blanket in a comfy pair of sweats.

“For what?” He genuinely asks, clearly not picking up on my innuendo. I’m not used to being so direct, but somehow I don’t feel embarrassed by anything with him.

“For last night's activities… I fear only one of our jobs was finished.” I respond and see it click behind his emerald eyes.

“Ahh.. well honey, that was not a job at all and I never expected favors for favors.” He pauses before adding, “Who made you feel like a tally should be kept for such things?” He looks at me more perplexed than turned on. I don’t think my tactics are really setting the mood.

“Well, to be honest I’m not really used to the tally being in my favor… or anywhere near even. That was a little out of my wheelhouse.” I admit, again hoping he understands the underlying meaning to my words.

“Wait, are you saying what I think you’re saying?” He backs up, his brows furrowing.

“Let’s just say, I don’t think Grant has ever gone down on me.

It wasn’t exactly ‘his thing’.” I say, adding air quotes to the responses he’s given me before.

I think back to being completely humiliated after finally growing the courage to ask for my own satisfaction and him shutting me down instantly.

His jaw drops agape. “His thing? How could someone as perfect as you not be anyone's thing?” He shakes the shock off his face and then resumes. “How about this…” He finally gets comfortable under the blanket with me. “Let’s throw the score out the window and even the playing field.”

Before I can respond, he’s leaning over me with his hand behind my head.

Bringing my head up to his and pushing his lips into mine.

And in that moment, everything felt as though it had changed.

Nothing else mattered outside of this room.

I had it all right here. My fears were settled, ecstasy taking over me, and I finally let myself relax in his grasp.

“Are you sure?” He whispers in my ear, snapping me out of my lust filled haze.

“Yes. Now don’t ask me again,” I plead, closing my eyes again.

“But…. the baby,” he slows down, hesitation in his voice.

“What about the baby?” My eyes snap back open in response.

“What if I like… poke her in the eye or something?” He backs up, breaking our connection.

“Reid, that’s not a thing. Besides, the doctor said today that I’m not even dilating. Now shut up and fuck me,” I thread my fingers through his hair and pull his face back to mine.
