CHAPTER 30

The Second Invitation

One song became an entire country.

Daniel had never understood how time could stretch in moments of embarrassment or danger and had not known it could do the same with desire.

Marcus and Elise moved through the slow song with enough space for propriety and enough attention to make propriety meaningless.

The ballroom saw a security guard graciously dancing with a guest after a power interruption.

Daniel saw his wife discovering what it felt like to be held by another man's steadiness while her husband watched from the edge of the floor and did not disappear.

Elise's eyes found him again and again.

At first, she looked for permission. Then reassurance. Then, as the song deepened and Marcus guided her through a gentle turn, something more complicated. She looked at Daniel as if the sight of him watching made the dance more intimate, not less.

Daniel gripped the jacket in his hands.

Marcus said something to her. Elise smiled, not bright and social, but slow and private. Daniel felt the smile like a hand beneath his ribs. Jealousy came, sharp enough to matter. So did pride. So did the impossible heat of realizing he had asked for this and she was glowing inside the answer.

When the song ended, Marcus released her immediately.

That mattered too.

Elise stood before him for half a second, flushed and breathless. Marcus inclined his head, then turned and walked her back to Daniel. Not halfway. Not leaving her in the open. Back to her husband.

Daniel did not trust his voice when she reached him.

Elise took the jacket from his arm and pressed it against her chest. 'Are you here?' she whispered.

The question nearly undid him.

'Yes,' he said. 'I am here.'

Marcus stood close enough to hear, far enough not to claim the moment.

'Good,' Elise said, and the word sounded like relief, gratitude, and hunger braided together.

Daniel looked at Marcus. 'Thank you.'

'You both held the line,' Marcus said.

Held the line. The phrase should have made the night feel contained. Instead it made Daniel aware of all the lines still ahead: the next conversation, the next touch not taken, the next door opened or left shut.

A staff member approached Marcus with a clipboard, but Marcus lifted one finger without looking away from them. The staff member stopped, waited, then retreated. It was the first time Daniel had seen Marcus delay the building for them.

'Your driver is delayed,' Marcus said. 'Road closures from the storm. Fifteen minutes, maybe twenty.'

Elise laughed softly. 'Aster Hall keeps finding ways not to let us leave.'

'Buildings do not decide,' Marcus said. 'People do.'

The sentence landed with meaning he did not soften.

Daniel felt Elise go still beside him.

'There is a waiting lounge upstairs,' Marcus continued. 'Private, camera outside the door, not inside. I can walk you there, or you can wait in the main lobby with the other guests.'

The option was cleanly offered. No pressure. No hidden hand on the scale, though desire itself was a scale and all three of them knew which way it tipped.

Daniel looked at Elise. 'What do you want?'

She did not answer quickly. That made him love her more in the moment. She took the question seriously, touching her ring, her thumb moving slowly over the band.

'I want the quiet room,' she said. 'But only if you want it too.'

Daniel looked toward the lobby, bright with guests and safe noise. He could choose it. He could end the night on a victory: one dance, one brave request, no collapse. A reasonable man might stop there.

But reasonable had kept them lonely.

'I want the quiet room,' he said.

Marcus watched them with that impossible calm. 'Then say the rule.'

Elise answered first. 'Guardrail means stop.'

Daniel added, 'Together means together.'

Marcus nodded. 'Good.'

They left the ballroom as the next song began, not sneaking, not rushing. Daniel carried Elise's coat this time, and she walked beside him with her hand linked through his arm. Marcus led them toward the east corridor, the same path that had changed everything two nights earlier.

At the staff door, he paused and looked back. 'Last chance for the main lobby.'

Daniel's fear rose, but it did not master him. Elise's hand tightened around his arm.

'Quiet room,' Daniel said.

Marcus entered the code. The lock clicked.

Beyond the door, the hallway waited in amber shadow, polished and empty, as if Aster Hall had been holding its breath since Thursday.

They stepped inside together.

This time, Daniel did not feel escorted out of his life.

He felt, terrified and awake, as if he were being escorted deeper into it.
