CHAPTER 31
The Waiting Lounge
The upstairs lounge was smaller than Daniel expected.
Aster Hall had trained him to anticipate grandeur: marble staircases, chandeliers, velvet ropes, corridors designed to make guests feel wealthier than they were.
But the waiting lounge above the east wing felt almost private enough to be a secret.
It held one low sofa, two leather chairs, a polished table with a silver lamp, and tall windows that looked over the rain-blurred city.
The walls were paneled in dark wood, and the carpet swallowed the sound of their steps.
Marcus opened the door, stepped inside first, and checked the room with the efficient sweep of a man who trusted habit more than comfort.
Daniel noticed it all: the glance toward the windows, the doorstop, the small camera dome outside the hall but not inside, the way Marcus looked at exits before looking at Elise.
Protection first. Desire second.
That order should have reassured Daniel. It did. It also made the desire feel more dangerous because it was disciplined.
'No cameras inside,' Marcus said. 'Door stays unlocked unless you ask otherwise. I will stand near the hall if you want privacy.'
Elise turned to him before Daniel could answer. The burgundy dress caught the lamp light in a way that made the color seem alive. 'Do you want privacy, Daniel?'
The question was generous and merciless.
Privacy meant retreating into the marriage after bringing Marcus this far.
Privacy meant they could talk, hold each other, recover.
It also meant Daniel would spend the rest of the night wondering what would have happened if he had been brave for one more minute.
He touched his wedding band.
'I want him in the room,' Daniel said.
Elise's breath changed. Marcus did not move, but Daniel felt the man's attention settle on him like a hand between the shoulder blades.
'Then say what that means,' Marcus said.
Daniel almost bristled. He had invited him. Was that not enough? But he understood, with a flash of reluctant respect, that Marcus was not going to let fog do the work. Fog was how people got hurt and then blamed the dark.
'It means we sit,' Daniel said. 'We talk. We keep the same rule. No surprises. No pretending something happened by accident.'
'Good.' Marcus closed the door but left it unlatched. The click was soft, not final.
Elise moved to the window. Rain streaked the glass behind her, turning the city into liquid gold. Daniel stood near the sofa, not trusting his knees enough to sit. Marcus remained by the door, hands folded loosely in front of him, the perfect picture of patience.
'You are both very still,' Elise said.
Daniel laughed once, barely. 'I am trying not to combust.'
Her smile warmed, but her eyes glistened with nerves. 'That makes two of us.'
Marcus's voice came from the door. 'Stillness is not failure.'
Elise looked at him. 'What is it?'
'A way to make sure the next step belongs to the person taking it.'
Daniel felt that answer move through the room. In another man's mouth, it might have sounded rehearsed. From Marcus, it sounded lived in.
Elise came away from the window and held out her hand to Daniel. He took it. Her palm was warm and faintly damp. He loved that she was nervous. Not because he wanted her afraid, but because it meant this mattered to her too.
'Sit with me,' she said.
He sat on the sofa. She sat beside him, close enough that her thigh touched his. Marcus stayed where he was.
For several seconds, no one spoke. The lamp hummed softly. Rain tapped the windows. Somewhere below them, the ballroom music rose through the floorboards like a memory of another life.
Then Elise looked at Marcus and said, 'I liked dancing with you.'
Daniel's pulse kicked.
Marcus inclined his head. 'I liked being trusted with it.'
The answer did not steal the moment from Daniel. Somehow, it returned it to him with more weight.
Elise turned to her husband. 'And I liked that you watched.'
The room narrowed to her face.
Daniel swallowed. 'I liked watching.'
There it was, said plainly beneath a locked sky, with the guard who had exposed the truth standing only a few steps away. Daniel expected shame to follow. Instead Elise's fingers tightened around his, and the smile that touched her mouth was full of wonder.
'Then stay with me,' she whispered.
'I am here,' Daniel said.
Marcus shifted at the door, not closer, not away. 'Then begin there.'
