CHAPTER 47
The Husband’s Chair
Daniel was the one who moved the chair.
He dragged it from beside the bookshelf to the center of the living room, angled so he could see Elise near the tape and Marcus beyond it.
The legs scraped softly against the rug.
Elise watched him with wide eyes, and Marcus's attention sharpened in a way Daniel had begun to recognize.
The guard noticed choices the moment they became real.
'What is the chair for?' Elise asked.
Daniel sat. His hands rested on the arms, knuckles pale for one second before he forced them to loosen.
'For me,' he said.
Her throat moved. 'To watch?'
The word filled the room.
Daniel nodded. 'To watch and stay. To not hover behind you like I can protect myself from wanting this by standing close enough to interrupt it.'
Elise's eyes filled with something too bright to be only desire. 'Daniel.'
'I am here.'
Marcus's voice was quiet. 'That is a strong boundary.'
'It feels like an insane boundary.'
'Strong ones often do.'
Elise laughed softly, nervous and moved. She looked at the tape, then at Daniel. 'What do you want me to do?'
He had expected that question to make him feel powerful. Instead it made him feel responsible. Her trust was not a toy. It was a living thing placed carefully in his hands.
'Stand at the line,' he said. 'Face him. Let me see you be seen.'
Elise obeyed slowly, not because she was submitting to an order, but because she was accepting an invitation.
She stood on Daniel's side of the tape, facing Marcus.
Her hands hung at her sides. The black dress hugged her in the lamplight, elegant and intimate, the kind of dress a husband could unzip at the end of a normal night without understanding how much power had been hidden in the ordinary ritual.
Marcus did not cross the line. 'May I compliment you?'
Elise looked back at Daniel.
He nodded.
'Yes,' she said.
Marcus's gaze moved from her face to the line of her shoulders and back again with careful restraint. 'You look nervous, but not uncertain. There is a difference. Nervous means you understand the weight. Uncertain means you do not want the step. I do not see uncertainty.'
Elise took a shaky breath. 'You see a lot.'
'That is my job.'
'Is it your job tonight?'
Marcus glanced at Daniel before answering. 'Only because you both invited me to keep doing it.'
Daniel leaned back in the chair. The honesty cut deeper than seduction. He had imagined danger as something reckless. This danger was precise. It had manners. It asked permission. It watched the tape on the floor as if it were sacred.
'Tell her what else you see,' Daniel said.
Elise's head turned. 'Are you sure?'
'No.' He gave her a small, crooked smile. 'But I am willing.'
Marcus waited for Elise's nod. When it came, he said, 'I see a woman trying to learn whether being desired by more than one gaze makes her less faithful or more awake.'
Elise covered her mouth with one hand.
Daniel's chest clenched. Marcus had named it too cleanly. He wanted to object, wanted to protect Elise from being understood by another man, but Elise turned toward him with tears in her eyes and he knew objection would be a lie.
'More awake,' Daniel said before he could overthink it.
Her hand lowered. 'You believe that?'
'I believe you are still here. I believe you keep choosing me every time you check my face before the next breath. I believe I have confused your aliveness with danger because I was afraid it meant I was not enough.'
Elise crossed the room to him without asking. The sudden movement startled Marcus, who stepped back even though the tape was still between them. Elise knelt in front of Daniel's chair and took his face in both hands.
'You are enough,' she said fiercely. 'This is not because you are lacking.'
Daniel gripped her wrists, overwhelmed. 'I know that tonight. I need you to remind me when I forget.'
'Every time.'
She kissed him there, in the chair he had chosen for watching, and the kiss was not a retreat from Marcus. It was proof that Marcus's presence had not emptied the marriage. It had lit the corners Daniel used to leave dark.
When Elise rose again, her lipstick was slightly smudged. Marcus looked away with deliberate respect.
Daniel noticed and smiled for the first time all evening without fear. 'You can look,' he said.
Marcus looked back.
Elise stood between them, trembling and radiant.
The chair held Daniel steady. The sight undid him anyway.
