CHAPTER 48

A Hand Across the Line

The tape became less like a barrier and more like a question.

They stood around it for a long time, speaking in fragments, breathing through waves of feeling that rose and broke and rose again.

Daniel stayed in the chair. Elise moved between the sofa and the line, never crossing.

Marcus remained on his side with a discipline that made every inch of distance visible.

Then Elise extended her hand.

Not far. Just enough that her fingers hovered above the tape, palm angled upward, asking without words what her voice could no longer hold steadily.

Daniel's body reacted before his mind approved. Heat rushed through him, then fear. He sat forward, gripping the arms of the chair. Elise did not withdraw. Marcus did not move.

'Daniel,' Marcus said.

It was not a demand. It was a reminder that the decision belonged somewhere specific.

Daniel looked at his wife. She was breathing through parted lips, eyes glossy, face flushed with the effort of wanting honestly. He loved her so fiercely in that moment that jealousy seemed too small a word for what he felt. Jealousy was there, yes, sharp and animal. But beneath it was awe.

She trusted him with this.

'Your hand only,' Daniel said.

Elise nodded. 'My hand only.'

Marcus waited one more second. Daniel realized he was waiting for Elise too, for the final consent to come from her mouth rather than her gesture.

'Yes,' she whispered.

Marcus took her hand across the line.

The contact was simple. Fingers around fingers. Palm against palm. Yet the living room seemed to draw in around it. Daniel watched the exact place where Marcus held her and felt the sight travel through him like a lit match dropped into oil.

Elise closed her eyes.

Daniel made a sound he had not meant to make.

Her eyes opened immediately. 'Guardrail?'

He shook his head, but his voice was rough. 'No. Stay.'

Marcus's thumb remained still. The restraint was maddening. Daniel wanted to tell him to move it and wanted to forbid it forever. Both impulses flashed through him so fast that he almost laughed.

'This is why slow matters,' Marcus said quietly.

'Because Daniel might combust?' Elise asked, voice trembling with nervous humor.

'Because every inch has meaning.'

The sentence made Daniel grip the chair harder. Elise's gaze lowered to the tape beneath their joined hands. The painter's line looked suddenly ceremonial, as if they had invented a private altar from hardware store supplies and terror.

'What does this inch mean?' she asked.

Marcus looked to Daniel.

Daniel swallowed. The room waited.

'It means I can see you want him to touch you and still know you love me,' Daniel said.

Elise's face crumpled. 'Yes.'

'It means I can be jealous without making it your punishment.'

'Yes.'

'It means he is holding your hand because we allowed it, not because something was taken from me.'

Marcus's hand tightened once, subtly, then stilled again. Daniel saw the effect of his words on him and understood, with surprise, that Marcus needed the boundary too. Not merely for ethics. For his own control. His own wanting.

Elise looked at Marcus. 'Do you want more than my hand?'

The question struck the room like thunder contained inside silk.

Marcus's eyes did not leave hers. 'Yes.'

Daniel's breath stopped.

Marcus added, 'Not tonight unless Daniel and you both choose it. Wanting is not permission.'

Elise shivered. Daniel saw it move from her shoulders down through the line of her body.

The answer saved them from recklessness and made the wanting worse.

Daniel stood.

Elise started to pull her hand back, but he shook his head. He walked to her side, placed one hand at the small of her back, and faced Marcus across the tape. His wife's hand remained in the other man's.

For one suspended moment, the three of them formed something impossible and strangely balanced.

'Good,' Daniel said.

His voice sounded nothing like he expected. It sounded steadier. Darker. Awake.

Marcus's gaze flicked to him. 'Good?'

Daniel nodded, feeling Elise lean into his palm. 'Good that you want more. Good that you know you cannot have it unless we build the room strong enough.'

Elise whispered his name.

Daniel pressed his mouth to her temple. 'I am here.'

Marcus released her hand at last.

The absence of contact left the room shaking. Elise turned into Daniel's arms, and he held her while Marcus stepped back from the tape.

The line had held again.

But Daniel knew, with a certainty that frightened and thrilled him, that the line would not stay there forever.
