CHAPTER 49
After the Door Closes
Marcus left before midnight.
He did not linger for one more charged silence or one more careful compliment.
He accepted Daniel's handshake, accepted Elise's quiet thank you, and stepped onto the porch with the same calm restraint he had brought into the house.
Rain had started again, soft and silver beneath the porch light.
It dotted the shoulders of his coat as he turned back once.
'You both did well tonight,' he said.
Daniel almost laughed at the strange tenderness of being praised like a couple who had survived a difficult dance lesson, which in a way they had.
'You too,' Elise said.
Marcus looked at Daniel. 'Take care of each other after I leave.'
The instruction landed heavily. Daniel nodded.
'We will.'
Then Marcus walked down the path and into the rain-dark street.
Daniel closed the door.
For a moment, he kept his hand on the lock without turning it. The house behind him was silent except for Elise's breathing. He felt the shift immediately. With Marcus gone, the living room no longer had a witness. That did not make the desire disappear. It made it come home.
'Daniel?' Elise asked.
He turned.
She stood near the tape line, arms wrapped around herself, black dress soft in the lamplight. Without Marcus across from her, she looked suddenly vulnerable, as if the courage that had held her upright all evening needed somewhere safe to go.
Daniel crossed the room and pulled the tape from the rug. It came up with a quiet ripping sound.
Elise watched him wind the strip around his fingers. 'Are you angry?'
'No.'
'Are you sure?'
He threw the tape into the trash and came back to her. 'I am full.'
Her brow furrowed. 'Full?'
'Of too many things. Come here before I explain badly.'
She went to him at once. He wrapped her in his arms, and the first kiss after Marcus left was different from the kisses before.
It was not performed for anyone. It did not prove a rule.
It did not ask permission from a third pair of eyes.
It was theirs, greedy with relief, edged with the electricity of everything they had allowed and everything they had not.
Elise clutched his shirt. Daniel felt her body shake once, then settle against him.
'I thought I would feel guilty,' she whispered.
'Do you?'
'No. That scares me.'
He held her tighter. 'I thought I would feel smaller.'
'Do you?'
'No.' He laughed once, breathless. 'That scares me too.'
She looked up. 'What do you feel?'
Daniel slid his hands along her waist, over the fabric Marcus had admired without touching.
The dress felt different beneath his palms now, charged by absence, by restraint, by the knowledge that another man's wanting had not taken the right of Daniel's hands to know his wife.
It had reminded him to use them with intention.
'I feel like I want to take you upstairs,' he said.
Her eyes darkened. 'Because of him?'
'Because of you. Because of us. Because he left and told me to take care of you, and I intend to be extremely thorough.'
A laugh escaped her, then turned into a sound that made his pulse slam.
'That sounds responsible,' she said.
'Very.'
He lifted her hand and kissed the place where Marcus had held it. Elise's breath caught. Daniel kissed her palm, her wrist, the inside of her forearm, slow enough that each touch answered the evening in a language only their marriage could speak.
'Tell me if it hurts,' he whispered.
'It does not hurt.'
'Tell me if you need to stop.'
'I need you not to stop.'
The words went through him cleanly.
He took her upstairs.
The bedroom was dark except for the city glow through the curtains.
Daniel did not rush. He undid the wrap tie at her waist with hands that trembled, not from uncertainty but from the weight of being trusted.
Elise stood before him, eyes on his face, letting him see the woman who had stood at a tape line and asked to be honest.
What followed belonged to them, too intimate for performance, too tender to be confused with reclaiming.
They made room for the jealousy and let it become heat.
They made room for the fear and let it become care.
They made room for Marcus's name once, whispered not as an intrusion but as a truth they had brought into the room together.
Afterward, Elise lay against Daniel's chest, one leg tangled with his, her ring cool against his skin.
'Still with me?' she murmured.
Daniel kissed her hair. 'Every second.'
Downstairs, the painter's tape sat in the trash, no longer needed for the night.
Inside Daniel, a more complicated line remained, glowing in the dark.
