Chapter 49 - Too Close
They didn't speak as they walked back from the forest.
The quiet between them wasn't empty.
It was full.
Heavy with everything Athena had just felt... and everything she was trying to process.
The world around her seemed sharper now. Louder. Closer. Like the forest had followed her out of the trees and into the open air.
Halfway to the fortress gates, she stopped walking.
Silas took two more steps before realizing she wasn't beside him anymore.
He turned.
Athena stood still on the path, staring at nothing in particular, her breathing uneven.
He walked back to her slowly.
"What is it?" he asked quietly.
She looked up at him, her expression vulnerable in a way he hadn't seen before.
"Why do I feel safest with you?"
The question wasn't accusing.
It wasn't confused.
It was honest.
Silas didn't answer right away.
Because the truth sat too close to the surface.
He stepped toward her.
One pace.
Then another.
Until there was almost no space left between them.
Athena didn't move.
Didn't step back.
Her chest rose and fell quickly as she tilted her head slightly to keep his gaze.
Silas's hands lifted slowly and settled at her waist.
Not pulling.
Just holding.
The contact sent a warm, steady heat through her that made her breath catch.
She could feel the strength in his hands.
The steadiness.
The control.
Her fingers curled lightly into the front of his shirt without her realizing it.
Like she needed something to ground her.
Their foreheads almost touched.
Close enough that she could feel the warmth of his breath.
Close enough that her heart began to race for an entirely different reason.
Silas's voice dropped low.
"Because your body knows what your mind does not yet."
Athena swallowed hard.
Her eyes flicked to his lips for the briefest second before returning to his eyes.
The air between them felt charged.
Alive.
She leaned into him slightly without thinking.
And Silas had to fight the instinct to close the remaining distance.
His hands tightened just a fraction at her waist.
Enough for her to feel it.
Enough for her to know he felt it too.
But he didn't kiss her.
He didn't move.
They stayed like that for several long seconds.
Breathing each other in.
Feeling the pull grow stronger.
Dangerously stronger.
And neither of them stepped away.
