Chapter 50 - The Invitation

Silas did not release her immediately.

When he finally stepped back, the air between them felt changed - thinner, heavier, charged in a way Athena didn't have words for.

"Come with me," he said.

She followed without asking where.

They walked through the main halls of the fortress, and Athena noticed something different this time.

People moved aside when Silas passed.

Not hurried.

Not fearful.

Respectful.

And their eyes...

Their eyes lingered on her.

Not unkind.

But curious.

Measuring.

She straightened without realizing it.

They reached a large chamber carved deep into the mountain, lit by torches set into the walls. A long stone table sat in the center, etched with faint markings that looked older than the stone itself.

Rowan stood on one side of it.

And another man stood opposite him.

He was slightly shorter than Silas, broad-shouldered, with sharp features and dark eyes that assessed everything before trusting it.

His gaze landed on Athena immediately.

And stayed there.

Silas spoke calmly.

"Rowan. Kael."

Kael.

The Gamma.

He didn't bow his head like Rowan had.

He didn't smile.

He studied her openly.

Athena felt it like a weight against her skin.

"This is Athena," Silas said.

Kael's eyes flicked to Silas briefly.

Then back to her.

"I know who she is," he said flatly.

His voice wasn't rude.

But it wasn't welcoming either.

Athena swallowed and stepped closer to Silas without meaning to.

Silas noticed.

So did Kael.

Silas moved to the head of the table and gestured to the seat beside him.

"Sit."

Athena hesitated for half a second.

Then obeyed.

Rowan's expression was neutral, calm, observant.

Kael's was not.

He leaned forward slightly, bracing his hands on the table.

"She shouldn't be here," Kael said.

The words were direct.

Blunt.

Silas's eyes shifted to him slowly.

"She will be."

Kael's jaw tightened.

"She is human."

The word hung in the air like an accusation.

Athena's chest tightened, but she didn't look away.

Silas's voice remained calm.

"She is not."

Kael's eyes snapped back to Athena.

Searching.

Judging.

"I don't smell it clearly," he said.

Athena felt that comment deeper than she expected.

Silas leaned back slightly in his chair.

"That is because she is suppressed."

Kael didn't look convinced.

"And until that is undone," he said carefully, "she is a liability."

Athena's stomach twisted.

Not because he was being cruel.

Because he sounded honest.

Silas's hand rested lightly on the arm of her chair.

Not touching her.

But close enough that she felt anchored.

"She is under my protection," Silas said.

Kael's gaze didn't leave her.

"That is exactly what concerns me."

Silence settled heavily over the table.

Rowan finally spoke.

"The scouts saw mages near the northern ridge," he said calmly, redirecting the tension. "They're watching, not crossing."

Athena's eyes flicked to him.

Mages.

Silas nodded. "They're testing distance. Waiting."

Kael's gaze returned to Silas. "Then why bring her into this room? Why let her hear this?"

"Because she is the reason," Silas replied.

The bluntness of it made Athena's breath catch.

Kael looked back at her again.

This time, not with suspicion.

With calculation.

"She doesn't know enough," he said.

"I will decide what she knows," Silas answered.

Athena sat very still, listening, absorbing every word. No one was speaking around her. They were speaking with the understanding that she was part of this.

That realization hit her slowly.

She wasn't being hidden.

She was being included.

Kael studied her again.

Then he asked her directly,

"Do you understand what it means if they come here for you?"

Athena swallowed.

"I think I'm starting to."

Kael held her gaze for a long moment.

Looking for fear.

Looking for weakness.

What he saw instead made his expression shift slightly.

"You're not afraid," he observed.

Athena shook her head once.

"I'm angry."

Rowan's mouth twitched slightly.

Silas didn't react, but Athena felt the quiet approval in him.

Kael leaned back a fraction.

Still not convinced.

But no longer dismissing her.

The meeting continued, voices lowering into strategy and watch patterns and patrol routes.

But Athena felt it.

The shift in the room.

She wasn't just Silas's guest.

She was becoming something else.

And Kael, despite his distrust...

Was starting to see it too.
