Chapter 102 - The Severing
The ritual was quiet.
No audience.
No spectacle.
Just Athena, Elara, and a shallow stone bowl filled with clear water placed on a low table in the healing wing.
Silas waited outside at Athena's request.
This was something she needed to do herself.
Elara's voice was soft as she explained it.
"In wolf tradition, when a false bond must be broken, we do not ask permission from the one who placed it. We simply release it."
Athena nodded.
Her hands were steady.
She didn't feel fear.
She felt ready.
Elara handed her a small blade.
"Cut your palm. Let a few drops fall into the water."
Athena did.
The sting was brief.
The drops of blood rippled across the surface like tiny waves.
Elara placed her hand gently over Athena's.
"Speak what you release."
Athena looked down at the water.
She didn't have to think about the words.
"I release the bond that was never mine to carry."
The water shimmered faintly.
A warmth spread through her chest like a knot loosening that she hadn't realized was still there.
She closed her eyes.
And let it go.
?
James
James didn't know why he woke suddenly.
He sat up in bed, breath uneven, a strange pressure in his chest making it hard to inhale.
His eyes dropped to his left hand.
The wedding ring felt... hot.
Not warm.
Burning.
He hissed and yanked his hand back, but the metal seemed to sear against his skin.
"What the hell-"
He tried to pull it off.
It wouldn't move.
Panic surged as the heat intensified, pain shooting through his finger like fire traveling under his skin.
He stumbled out of bed and into the bathroom, turning on cold water and shoving his hand beneath it.
The ring sizzled faintly.
James cursed and grabbed a towel, twisting the ring hard until it finally slipped free.
The moment it left his finger-
The burning stopped.
He stared at it in his palm.
Confused.
Breathing hard.
And for the first time since Athena had been taken...
He felt it.
The quiet.
The absence.
Like something that had always been there in the back of his mind had simply... vanished.
James looked at the ring.
And knew.
"She's gone," he whispered.
?
Athena
Athena exhaled slowly.
Her shoulders dropped.
Her chest felt lighter.
Clearer.
She hadn't realized how much weight she had still been carrying until it disappeared.
Elara smiled softly.
"It's done."
Athena nodded.
And for the first time in her life...
She felt completely free.
