Chapter 92

Sally Grant writes: Lay Off Holly Baker

The hounding of personal injury barrister and single mum Holly Baker, possible beneficiary of Logan Quick’s controversial will, has gone too far.

What has this young woman done, for heaven’s sake?

Put herself through university? Chosen a professional field that will help others rather than be financially rewarding for herself?

Support, entirely alone, a young son with autism and a seriously ill father?

When the household budget didn’t add up (spoiler, it was never going to) she used her natural beauty and sensuality to provide an entirely legal service to consenting adults.

Her clients were more than happy (I’ve heard of no complaints) and she paid her bills. Where’s the harm?

How much of the bile thrown her way in the last week, on mainstream as well as social media, reflects the sanctimonious smugness of those who’ve never faced the struggles she has; or ill-concealed envy that no one would pay good money to see us naked?

Rumours abound that Ms Baker was being blackmailed by an old friend (who needs enemies?) and that her refusal to pay up led to her public outing.

Devon and Cornwall Police have declined to comment on an open case and Ms Baker herself is staying tight-lipped.

But if any good is to come of this mess, let it be a warning to potential blackmailers: other people’s secrets, however salacious, are not your cash cows.

Shining a possible light on Holly’s horizon, her local MP, Sarah Leaming, believes social services should be able to pick up some of the bills for her father’s care going forward.

So, even if Logan Quick’s controversial will brings no financial gain to Ms Baker and her fellow token recipients (she and they are still insisting they gave the tokens back), things might be looking a little easier in the Baker household in future.
