Chapter 14

Claudia's first kiss was not tentative. Micah had expected control; he had not expected hunger delivered with such precision.

Before entering the room, Micah had prepared for the possibility that desire might vanish in person. Ethical structure did not manufacture chemistry. Claudia could see him without a jacket, hear his voice at intimate distance, or smell the ordinary soap on his skin and decide no.

Instead, she crossed the space like a woman finished with abstraction.

The first pressure of her mouth made Micah aware of every place they were not yet touching. He felt the line of her body inside the circle of his arms without closing that circle. Her silk held warmth. One silver curl brushed his cheek and caught briefly in the roughness of his jaw.

Claudia freed it with two fingers and smiled. "Practical entanglement."

"Amber?"

"No. Administrative note."

They both laughed softly. Humor did not reduce the charge. It made the bodies inside it more real.

She reached for the back of his neck and drew his mouth down to hers. Her lips were warm, the pressure deliberate. He set his left hand at her waist where he had asked, felt silk over softness, and did not move the right until she said against his mouth, "Both hands."

"Where?"

"Waist first. Then ask."

He placed both palms around her. She was small enough that his fingers nearly met at her back, but the observation created no fragility. Claudia occupied the contact completely. When he deepened the kiss, she opened for him with a low sound that made his body harden.

He ended the kiss before urgency blurred the next question.

Her eyes opened. "Why did you stop?"

"To ask. May I touch your hair?"

"Yes."

Micah slid his left hand into the silver curls at the nape of her neck. The texture was softer than it looked and resistant enough to catch his fingers. He did not pull. Claudia exhaled and leaned into his palm.

"Do that again," she said.

He worked his fingers through the curls and held her head without directing it. Her next kiss was slower. She touched the buttons of his shirt, looked at him, and waited.

"Open," he said.

Claudia unfastened them one by one. Micah's right shoulder tightened when he moved to remove the shirt. Her hand stopped.

"Let me."

"Yes. Left side first."

She eased the shirt from his left arm, then guided the fabric carefully from the right. No pity entered her face. She used the adjustment as permission to look at him.

His tattoos had accumulated without a theme: a line drawing of a mountain ridge on one forearm, a small stage weight marking, leaves copied from his grandmother's garden, black geometry added by an artist in Queens because Micah liked it. Claudia traced the ridge with one finger.

"This is home?"

"A view near it. May I touch beneath your top?"

"Not yet."

"All right."

She kissed the ink on his forearm, then the center of his chest. The denial sharpened his desire without becoming a challenge.

Claudia stepped back. "Tell me where you want me."

The phrase struck with the force it had promised.

"Stand in front of the sofa," he said. "Back toward me. Keep enough room to turn if you want."

She moved there and waited.

"May I put my hands on your hips?"

"Yes."

Micah came behind her. He set his hands over the silk, one on each hip, and felt her weight settle. "Feet a little wider. Only if your knee is comfortable."

She adjusted. "It is."

"Put your hands on mine."

Claudia covered his fingers. He guided her into a slow shift backward until the length of her body met his. His erection pressed against her through their clothes, and she inhaled sharply.

"That pressure?" he asked.

"Wanted. More."

He increased it without trapping her, his stance wide enough that she could step free. With his mouth near her ear, he told her to let her head rest against his chest if her neck wanted it. She did. Silver curls brushed his jaw.

"I want your hand under my top now," she said.

"Which hand?"

"Left."

Micah slid his left palm beneath silk and found warm skin, the soft plane of her abdomen, the edge of her bra. He waited.

"Higher," she said.

He cupped her breast through lace. Claudia's grip tightened over his other hand. Her nipple hardened against his palm.

"May I touch beneath the bra?"

"Yes."

He found the clasp by feel, released it, and filled his hand with her. The sound she made was nothing like her composed voice. He stroked his thumb over her nipple while keeping the pressure of his body steady behind her.

"You like clear instructions," he murmured.

"I like them from you in this room."

The correction thrilled him. "Good."

"Do not praise me as if I performed."

"Wasn't planning to. I like the limit."

She turned within his hands. "Take off my top."

"Request or instruction?"

Her dry smile appeared through desire. "A request delivered efficiently."

He drew the wrap top over her shoulders rather than lifting it above her head.

The bra followed. Claudia stood before him with her breasts bare, her trousers still precise at the waist, her skin warm medium-brown under the low lamps.

A faint mark crossed one side of her lower abdomen, an old laparoscopic scar she had not mentioned because it changed nothing they planned.

Micah looked without inventorying her.

"Tell me," she said.

"I want you as you are standing."

"Specific."

"I want your breasts in my hands. I want my mouth on them. I want to watch your face when you decide you have had enough of standing."

Her breath caught. "Open."

He lowered his mouth to her left nipple. Claudia braced one hand on his shoulder, the uninjured side, and threaded the other into his hair. He licked slowly, then drew the tight peak between his lips. Her back arched. He supported her at the waist without taking her weight.

"Harder," she said.

He increased the suction. Her fingers tightened.

Three taps landed against his shoulder.

Micah stopped instantly and lifted his head. His hands opened but remained near enough to catch only if needed. "Amber or Closed?"

"Amber. My knee does not like this angle. I want the sofa."

"Sit first. I'll follow."

She sat, tested the bend, and shifted one leg outward. "Better."

He knelt before her, keeping his right arm free. "Do you want my mouth again?"

"Yes. Not on my breast."

Her gaze dropped toward her trousers.

Micah's body tightened. "May I open them?"

"Yes."

He unfastened the tailored waistband and drew the trousers down only after Claudia lifted her hips. Her underwear was cream, already damp. He kissed the inside of one knee, then the other, staying well above the joint.

"Where?" he asked.

"Between my thighs."

"May I remove these?"

"Yes."

He eased the underwear down her legs. Claudia watched him without covering herself.

Her body bore the ordinary signs she had named: softness at the belly, a few silver curls among dark at the mound, the flush of arousal, moisture that was present and still benefited from the lubricant waiting nearby.

Micah warmed a small amount between his fingers after she approved it.

"Look at me," she said.

He did as he spread the slickness over her with two gentle fingers. Her lips parted. He found her clitoris with the pad of his thumb and watched the exact moment pleasure broke through composure.

"Pressure?"

"More. Slow."

He gave her more without speeding. When her hips began to move, he lowered his mouth and replaced his thumb with his tongue. Claudia gripped the sofa cushion, one knee opening wider. He kept a hand beneath her thigh so the joint carried less strain.

She tasted warm and faintly salted. Her sounds became rougher as he circled, flattened his tongue, and listened to every change in her breath. When he slid one finger inside after asking, her body tightened around him.

"Another," she said.

"Comfortable?"

"Yes. Slowly."

He added the second, used the angle she directed, and felt the small tremors begin.

Claudia's hand came to the back of his head—not forcing, holding.

Her orgasm built without drama and took her with a deep, broken sound.

Her thighs closed around his shoulders, then loosened when he reduced pressure.

Micah rested his cheek against her inner thigh and waited for her breath to settle.

"Open?" he asked.

"Very."

She drew him up by the hand. He stood carefully, arousal painful now, and Claudia unfastened his trousers.

"May I?" she asked.

"Yes."

Her hand closed around his penis through his briefs first, firm and curious. Micah shut his eyes for one second.

"Look at me," she said, returning the command he had never given.

He opened them.

She freed him and stroked the length once. "Tell me what you want."

"Your hand. Then a condom. Then you above me so your knee controls the bend."

"Your shoulder?"

"Supported on the sofa. No overhead load."

Claudia used more lubricant at his request, her hand moving with a measured rhythm that made his abdomen tense. She watched his face with focused pleasure.

"Enough," he said before he lost the ability to make the transition slowly. "Amber for the condom."

She stopped at once.

Micah sat deep in the sofa, right shoulder supported, and opened the barrier himself while Claudia watched. She straddled him after testing her knee, one foot planted for control and the other leg at an easier angle.

"I want to guide your hips with my left hand," he said.

"Yes. Right hand on my breast."

"That angle's safe."

She positioned him at her entrance. The first pressure made her face tighten.

"Pause?"

"Yes. Amber. More lubricant."

No apology. No embarrassment. Micah applied more, stroked her with his thumb until her body softened, and waited for her to choose.

"Now," Claudia said.

She lowered herself gradually. Heat closed around him inch by inch. Micah gripped her hip with the left hand and kept the right open over her breast as requested. When she took him fully, both of them stopped.

"Comfort?" he asked.

"Full. Good. Do not move yet."

He remained still while she adjusted, his whole body alive with restraint.

Then Claudia began to rise and sink over him. Micah guided the arc, not the pace. Her silver curls shook loose around her face. She was fifty and beautiful without qualification, soft and powerful without the second word canceling the first.

"Tell me where," she breathed.

"A little forward. Put your hand behind my left shoulder, not the right. There. Keep your foot planted."

The changed angle drew a gasp from her. Micah felt her tighten and nearly lost control.

"Again," she said.

He guided her forward on each descent, used his thumb between their bodies, and watched pleasure make her expression unguarded. Claudia came with his name in her mouth, not his age, her body pulsing around him. The sight and sound pulled him after her. He asked, "Open for me to finish?"

"Yes."

He came hard inside the barrier, holding her hip without trapping it.

They stayed joined until breath became ordinary. Claudia kissed his forehead. The tenderness landed more deeply than the sex had prepared him for.

Micah had spent the encounter attending to her comfort so naturally that his own body felt temporarily distant after release. Claudia's gaze went to his shoulder before he asked.

"Shoulder?"

"Tired. Not hurt."

"May I massage around it?"

"Yes. Not directly over the front joint. Back edge and shoulder blade."

She adjusted on his lap only after checking her knee, then worked her fingers into the muscle with careful pressure. Micah exhaled. Receiving care without immediately returning it made him restless.

"You can let me do this," she said.

"You don't have authority over my ability to relax."

"True. May I continue while you complain?"

"Yes."

Her dry humor brought another breath out of him. He told her when the pressure was too light and when it became enough. The act fulfilled the intention he had nearly omitted from the form: aftercare could include his needs too.

"This is what I notice beyond your hands," Claudia said. "You know the difference between endurance and comfort."

"Sometimes."

"Then say when you don't."

The request carried no professional authority. Micah accepted it because he wanted the same future possibility.

"We need to move before my knee objects to romance as a category," she said.

Micah laughed against her skin. "On three?"

"One is sufficient."

They separated carefully, checked the barrier, cleaned up, and moved to the bed only for aftercare. Claudia lay on her back beneath a sheet. Micah rested beside her with his right arm supported by a pillow. They drank water and honored ten minutes without defining anything.

At the end, he asked, "Do you want another meeting with me?"

"Yes."

"Not because the structure says one is available."

"Because I want you. Your patience. Your precision. The way you changed the hold without making adjustment a failure. Your mouth. Your humor."

The specificity loosened something in him.

"I want another too," he said. "And breakfast someday."

Claudia looked toward the clock. 12:57.

She sat up and reached for her clothes.

Micah did not ask her to stay. He had promised himself he would not turn the first night into a referendum.

Still, the unasked question followed her all the way to the door.
