Chapter 15
Dev arrived in the Nocturne Suite wanting Claudia's words and discovered that he first wanted her silence.
He had expected a polished opening and prepared questions sharp enough to get beneath it. The preparation embarrassed him now. Claudia was not a locked report, and intimacy was not improved by treating her composure as an obstacle he had been hired to overcome.
She watched him take in the room. "What are you reconsidering?"
"Whether directness can become a performance of insight."
"Can it?"
"Frequently. I had three excellent questions. I now distrust all of them."
"What were they?"
"That is a question."
"I am allowed some."
He smiled. "I was going to ask what you fear would happen if you missed the one o'clock departure. It belongs to real conflict and the future, not tonight's erotic structure."
"Good decision."
"The second was what you found most difficult about wanting me."
Claudia considered. "I may answer that outside the structure later."
"Noted."
"The third?"
"Whether I could kiss you before analysis consumed the evening."
"That one may survive."
The permission in her voice drew him forward.
She stood beside the long window wearing copper silk and deep navy.
The curtains were closed against public sightlines.
Her curls had been pinned loosely at the sides, exposing the elegant line of her neck.
Dev knew she had been intimate with Micah four nights earlier.
He did not know how, where, or whether she had cried out.
The lack of information belonged to their privacy, not to his punishment.
Nell completed the threshold review.
Two participants. No observers. No recording.
Sober. Current health disclosures unchanged.
Barriers for intercourse. Lubricant available.
Claudia's knee and mature physiology addressed as ordinary comfort information.
Dev's glasses could be removed only by request. No professional-evaluation language, financial role-play, age humiliation, restraint, degradation, or promises about the future.
Closed ended the full encounter. Amber paused or narrowed it.
Three taps served as the nonverbal pause.
The direct-question structure could begin only after a present request. Dev could ask about immediate desire, sensation, pace, and permitted emotional truth. He could not use erotic permission to obtain answers about family, money, Dev's future, Micah's private bond, or the ninety-day outcome.
Aftercare would include water, a light meal if desired, quiet, and a specific answer about enjoyment. Dev would leave using his own transportation unless he chose otherwise. No breakfast planned.
"Current answer?" Nell asked.
"Open to private conversation," Claudia said. "No touch yet."
"Same," Dev answered.
Nell left. Claudia turned VK-109 and closed the door.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Dev noticed the movement of her breath beneath silk, the small tension in her left hand, the fact that she had selected flat shoes and left them near the sofa as if she intended the night to involve her whole body rather than a pose.
"You are quieter than advertised," she said.
"I am budgeting my words."
"For scarcity?"
"For impact."
Her smile made the plan less important.
Dev crossed half the distance. "May I ask whether you want me to kiss you?"
"You may ask."
"Do you?"
"Yes."
"Where?"
"My mouth first."
"May I touch your face while I do?"
"Yes."
He cupped her jaw and kissed her. Claudia's mouth opened beneath his with a directness that erased every abstract concern for one clean moment. Dev tasted tea and the faint sweetness of the pear served during threshold. He stroked his thumb along the soft line below her cheekbone.
She took his lower lip between her teeth, not hard enough to hurt. Appetite moved through him.
"Question structure," she said against his mouth. "Open."
"What do you want now?"
"Your jacket off."
He removed it and laid it over the chair.
"Your glasses," she said. "May I?"
"Yes. Both hands. Put them in the case on the table."
Claudia lifted the frames carefully. The room softened at its edges, but her face remained clear at this distance. She placed the glasses where he had asked instead of making their removal symbolic.
"What do you want me to see?" he asked.
"Me. Not a version of me you have analyzed into safety."
"What may I touch?"
"My neck. My back. Over the silk until I change the answer."
Dev put his mouth beneath her ear and his hands along her back. Claudia shivered. He did not ask whether the shiver meant age, fear, arousal, or temperature. He kissed downward, one chosen place at a time.
"What do you want to call me?" he asked.
"Dev."
"Good."
"That sounded like praise."
"It was gratitude for avoiding Doctor Batra in bed."
She laughed, her body relaxing under his hands.
"May I open the silk?" he asked.
"Yes."
The wrap loosened beneath his fingers. Claudia wore no bra. Her breasts settled naturally, full and soft, nipples darkening as he looked.
"Tell me what you want," she said.
"To kiss both. To use my hands. To hear whether you like one before I assume the other."
"Open."
Dev bent to her right breast, held the weight in one palm, and drew his tongue over the nipple. Claudia's fingers went into his hair. He varied pressure slowly, waiting for her body rather than asking questions over every breath.
"More suction," she said.
He gave it. Her grip tightened.
"Other one. Hands first."
Dev obeyed the information without turning it into submission. He cupped the left breast, stroked the nipple between his fingers, and felt Claudia press toward him.
"Do you want your silk off?" he asked.
"Yes. Then your shirt."
They undressed each other in turns, asking when the next contact changed. Dev's body was leaner than his jacket suggested, with strong shoulders and a softness at the waist he had no reason to disguise. Claudia ran both palms down his chest.
"What do you notice?" he asked.
"That you are embodied despite the shocking presence of an economics degree."
"Peer review will be brutal."
She kissed the center of his chest, then lower. Dev caught her shoulders gently before she knelt.
"Your knee?"
"The carpet is not the issue. Duration is."
"Then the edge of the bed. I want to see you comfortably."
"That was almost an instruction."
"A proposal. You may devastate it."
"Accepted."
Dev sat on the bed. Claudia positioned herself between his knees on a folded cushion, tested the angle, and reached for him.
"May I touch you?"
"Yes. Hand first."
She drew his briefs down and wrapped her fingers around his erection. Dev's breath left him. Her hand was warm, her grip confident, and the sight of her silver curls near his thighs made desire feel sharper without making age the scene.
"Pressure?" she asked.
"Good. Slower. Use lubricant."
She did. Dev watched her stroke him, thumb moving over the head. When she leaned closer, he said, "Amber."
Claudia stopped. "What changes?"
"I want your mouth, but I need to know your knee isn't paying for my view."
She shifted the cushion and extended one leg. "Better. Open?"
"Open."
Claudia took him between her lips. Dev fought the instinct to fill the room with questions. The wet heat of her mouth made language impossible for several strokes. He rested his hands on the bed rather than her head.
When he wanted deeper contact, he asked. She said no to depth and yes to his hand on her shoulder. The refusal increased trust so quickly it was almost erotic in itself.
"Enough," he said before release. "I want you on the bed."
"You may ask."
"Will you lie back and let me touch you?"
"Yes."
He helped only after she offered her hand. Claudia settled against the pillows, one knee bent comfortably. Dev kissed her stomach, the small old scars there, the inside of her thigh. He warmed lubricant and spread it over her folds with careful fingers.
"What do you want me to ask?" he said.
"Whether I am wet enough."
"Are you?"
"I am aroused. I want more lubricant anyway. Those facts are not enemies."
"Understood."
He used more. Then he touched her clitoris with two fingers, testing pressure until her hips lifted.
"There," she said. "Keep the pace."
Dev kept it. Questions could have become an escape from paying attention, so he listened instead. Claudia's breath shortened. Her abdomen tightened. He slid one finger inside after asking, then another when she requested it. Her body received him gradually.
"Look at me," she said.
He did.
"What do you want?"
"Your orgasm. Not as proof. Because I want to watch you have it."
"Then do not change anything."
He did not. Claudia came beneath his hand, face open, one palm pressed flat over her own breast. The sight made him ache.
When she could speak, she said, "Condom. Then you above me, if that is comfortable."
"Open. I will support on both forearms. Tell me if the weight changes."
Dev put on the barrier, added lubricant, and settled between her thighs. He waited at her entrance.
"Do you want this?" he asked.
"Yes. Slowly."
He entered in measured increments, watching her face. At the first tension around her mouth, he stopped.
"Amber?"
"Pause. Not stop."
"What do you need?"
"A different angle. Pillow beneath my hips."
He withdrew enough for the change, placed the pillow, and let Claudia guide him back. The next angle eased her body open. She exhaled as he seated fully.
"That," she said. "Move."
Dev began slowly. Claudia held his gaze, her hands moving over his back and hips. He felt each shift of her body around him, the soft contact of her thighs, the practical pillow beneath her becoming part of pleasure rather than evidence of deficiency.
"What do you want before one?" he asked, the question rough now.
"You. Faster."
He increased the pace.
"What else?"
"Your mouth on mine."
He kissed her as he moved. Her nails pressed into his back. When she asked for his hand between them, he adjusted his weight and circled her clitoris. The combination drew her upward.
"Dev."
"I am here."
"Do not ask. Just stay."
He stayed in the rhythm she had chosen until she came again, the contraction of her body pulling his own release near. He told her. She answered clearly, "Open. Finish."
Dev came with his forehead against hers, every polished sentence gone.
Afterward, he withdrew carefully, checked the barrier, and cleaned up. Claudia moved onto her side. He retrieved his glasses before joining her beneath the sheet.
With the frames back on, her face returned to full clarity. Dev saw flush high on her cheeks, mascara faintly smudged beneath one eye, and no embarrassment in the body resting open beside him.
"May I fix that?" he asked, indicating the smudge.
"Yes."
He used the corner of a damp cloth. The ordinary tenderness felt riskier than the explicit acts because it had no negotiated erotic role.
"What do you need?" Claudia asked.
Dev almost said nothing. Instead he answered the person rather than his habit. "Your hand on my chest. No analysis for five minutes."
"Open."
She placed her palm over his sternum. Dev felt his heartbeat against it and resisted the urge to make a joke about measurable outcomes.
After the silence, Claudia asked whether he wanted food. He said yes to fruit and cheese. He allowed her to hand him the plate without insisting on balancing the generosity through immediate service.
Ordinary acceptance was part of his work too.
"Do you want them on?" she asked.
"I want to see you."
They drank water. Claudia selected pear slices and cheese from the food Nell had left. Dev accepted a piece from her hand after saying yes, ordinary generosity no one used as leverage.
During quiet, his mind tried to quantify the difference between this night and the one she had shared with Micah. He let the thought pass without feeding it.
"Specific answer," Claudia said when ten minutes had ended. "I enjoyed your appetite. Your patience when I changed the angle. The fact that you stopped asking when attention mattered more. Your body. Your mouth. I want another meeting."
Dev felt the answer settle in him. "I enjoyed your directness. Your humor. The way you said more lubricant without apology. The look on your face when you decided I could stay inside you. I want another too."
Claudia glanced at the clock. 12:41.
"I can arrange a Society car," she said.
The offer was permitted. Dev checked his own preference.
"No, thank you. I have a train plan and a backup car account."
"All right."
No accusation. No lesson. The refusal remained ordinary.
They dressed. At the door, Dev asked the question Claudia had deferred at the Salon Table.
"What do you want after ninety days?"
Her expression closed by one careful degree. "That remains outside tonight's scope."
"Accepted."
"You make acceptance sound dangerous."
"Only to euphemism."
He kissed her once after asking and left alone.
On the train to Brooklyn, Dev realized the night had not made him less cautious about financial power, secrecy, or the clock.
It had made Claudia specific enough to lose.
