Chapter 18
Marcus did not ask what Ren had done with his mouth.
That was not the most difficult restraint of the evening, though it was close.
Beatriz met him the next night in the Aster Garden for a scheduled date that had existed before her private scene with Ren. She wore a soft gray dress and looked both rested and altered, as if some internal line had been redrawn. Marcus felt jealousy, curiosity, and desire arrive together.
"How was your evening?" he asked.
"Intense. Good. We changed part of the plan and honored the change. I learned I can direct pleasure without making the other person disappear."
She offered no choreography. Marcus accepted what she chose to share.
"How are you now?"
"Pleased. A little tender. Interested in you."
The last sentence settled his jealousy more effectively than any report could have.
They walked to a nearby restaurant and spoke about everything except the scene for nearly two hours.
Beatriz described Northline's offer in broad terms but not the number.
Marcus listened without advising. When she asked what he thought, he returned the decision to her so automatically that irritation flashed across her face.
"I asked what you think," she said. "Not what I should do."
"Northline can absorb volatility and will eventually consolidate. The trust preserves mission and leaves you exposed longer. Both are rational. Your employees need the full comparison."
"That sounded almost like an opinion."
"I contain hidden depths."
"Ren has been influencing you."
"He is corrupting my respect for structure."
Her smile held affection for the absent man. Marcus felt a second small twist of jealousy and let it inform him: he wanted his own place with her, not a greater place than Ren.
After dinner, they returned to Vesper House. No private program had been planned. Beatriz had access to a member salon until midnight, and they sat on a sofa with tea while the building quieted around them.
At eleven, Marcus stood.
"You are leaving," Beatriz said.
"You had an intense night. I thought you might want space."
"Did I ask for it?"
"No."
"Are you leaving because you want to?"
He looked at the door. He had told himself departure was considerate. Beneath that sat a more familiar impulse: leave before asking whether he was wanted when nobody needed guidance.
"No," he said.
Beatriz rose and came to him. "Then stay because I want you."
The sentence held no authority structure they had negotiated. It was direct desire.
"What do you want?" he asked.
"To kiss you. To touch you. To invite you to my apartment if your answer remains yes. Not a report, not a lesson, and not a response to what happened with Ren. You."
Marcus felt the practiced parts of him fall quiet.
"Yes," he said. "To all of that."
At her apartment, Beatriz locked the door and took him through the rooms without apology. Books filled two walls. A photograph showed her at twenty-three holding an infant Lívia, furious with anyone who might mistake exhaustion for weakness. Manuscripts crowded the armchair by the window.
"You do not own a television," Marcus said.
"I own one. It is behind the cabinet doors. Books are insecure and require display."
He moved toward her. "May I kiss you?"
"Yes."
Their mouths met beside the bookcase. The kiss deepened quickly, the restraint of dinner becoming hunger. Marcus held her waist, feeling the warm, full shape of her beneath his hands. Beatriz pressed against him. Her body was lush and strong, her softness not an absence of anything.
She drew back. "Bedroom?"
"Yes."
They confirmed current tests, barriers, and no relevant health changes. Beatriz preferred a condom for penetration. Marcus agreed. She set water on both sides of the bed and lowered the air-conditioning because heat, not fragility, mattered to her comfort.
"Do you want me to ask before each new kind of touch?" Marcus said.
"Ask when the answer is not evident or the action changes. Listen when I direct you. Do not make consent sound like you are administering a survey."
"Understood."
"And tell me what you want."
That was the more difficult instruction.
"I want to undress you," he said. "I want your hands on me. I want to make you come, but not as proof of competence."
"Good. Begin with the dress."
He found the zipper at her back and lowered it slowly. The gray fabric loosened over her shoulders. Beatriz stepped out of it without turning away. She wore a black bra and high-waisted underwear, her broad belly and thick thighs fully visible.
Marcus stared because desire required looking.
"Say it," she murmured.
"You are magnificent."
"Too grand. Be exact."
He placed both hands at her waist. "I love the weight of you in my hands. The silver in your hair against your shoulders. The curve here." His thumbs followed the generous line below her ribs. "I want to kiss your stomach and hear whether you like it."
Her expression softened. "I do."
Marcus lowered himself to his knees, not in submission, not as Ren knelt, but because Beatriz's body invited a path downward. He kissed the center of her belly. Her hand came to the back of his head. He kissed one hip, then the other, feeling her breath change.
"Take these off," she said.
He drew down her underwear and helped her step free. She stood before him naked below the bra, unhidden. Marcus pressed his mouth to the inside of her thigh.
"May I taste you?"
"In bed. After I have touched you."
"Yes."
He stood. Beatriz unbuttoned his shirt, her fingers calm until they reached his belt. Marcus felt the old urge to take over, to make the process easy for her and therefore easier for himself. He kept his hands at his sides.
She opened his trousers and slid one hand inside his underwear.
His breath broke.
"You are hard," she said.
"For you."
She stroked him once, direct and firm. Marcus's eyes closed.
"Look at me."
He did.
The request resembled authority without becoming their dynamic. He obeyed because he wanted her gaze, not because he had offered a submissive ritual.
Beatriz watched his face while her hand moved. Marcus felt pleasure and exposure rise together.
"Tell me what you want next," she said.
"Your mouth."
The admission arrived rough.
"Would you like to ask?"
"Will you put your mouth on me?"
"Yes."
She guided him to sit on the edge of the bed. Beatriz knelt between his knees and freed his cock. Marcus had been touched by lovers, praised, wanted, but her deliberate gaze made him feel newly unarmored. She licked along the underside, then took him into her mouth.
He gripped the bedspread.
Beatriz withdrew. "You may touch my hair. Do not guide my head."
"Yes."
He spread his fingers through her curls as she returned. Her mouth was warm, her tongue skillful without treating his orgasm as an assignment. Marcus let himself make sound. He told her when the pressure was good. When he began to get close, he asked her to stop.
Beatriz lifted her head at once. "What do you want?"
"I want to be inside you."
"I want that too."
They undressed fully. Marcus took a condom from the nightstand and rolled it on. Beatriz lay back against the pillows, then changed her mind and sat up.
"Wait."
He stopped between her thighs. "All right."
Uncertainty crossed her face. "My body is tired from last night. I want penetration, but slower than I expected."
"We can stop."
"I did not say stop."
"You're right. Tell me what slow means."
She took his hand and guided it between her legs. "Help me relax first."
Marcus stroked her with his fingers, learning the responses Ren knew in another private language without asking to compare. Beatriz directed pressure. He kissed her breasts, unhooked the bra after permission, and drew one nipple into his mouth while his hand moved.
Her hips lifted. She touched his face.
"Now," she said. "On your side."
They lay facing each other. Beatriz hooked one leg over his hip and guided his cock to her entrance. Marcus entered an inch and waited.
"More," she said.
He moved slowly until her body held him. The intimacy of their faces close together, neither above the other, undid something in him.
Beatriz kissed him. "Move."
Marcus began a careful rhythm. Pleasure built with the friction and with her hand at the back of his neck. She was not receiving passively; she met each thrust, adjusted the angle, told him when she wanted deeper and when to slow.
"You feel—" His sentence failed.
"Say it poorly."
"Good. Too good. I want more and I am afraid of making this about performance."
Beatriz pressed her forehead to his. "Then stay here. No performance."
He did. He let uncertainty remain visible. When his rhythm faltered, she did not interpret it as failure. She put her hand between their bodies and touched herself while he moved.
Marcus watched her pleasure gather. It did not become a test. He kissed her mouth, her cheek, the silver near her temple. Beatriz came quietly, body tightening around him, her hand gripping his shoulder.
The sensation pulled him over the edge. Marcus thrust once more and came with his face against her neck, the sound torn from a place below language.
They remained joined until their breathing slowed.
"I do not know what to say," Marcus admitted.
Beatriz stroked his back. "Excellent."
He laughed against her skin.
Later, he disposed of the condom and returned with a warm cloth without assuming she needed assistance. "Would you like this?"
"Yes. Then come back to bed."
He did.
Marcus lay beside her while she took her nighttime medication and recorded a blood-pressure reading she chose to check after exertion. He did not ask for the number. When she frowned at the cuff, he asked, "Do you want support, information, or privacy?"
"Water and ten quiet minutes."
He brought water and sat near without watching the machine. The second reading satisfied her; she recorded it and put the cuff away.
"Thank you," she said.
"For the water?"
"For asking what support meant."
Marcus returned to the bed. Beatriz opened one arm, and he placed his head against her chest.
The position made him feel protected in a way he could not yet name without embarrassment. Her fingers moved through his hair. No question followed. She did not ask him to translate the night. For once, he let being held be the entire thing he contributed.
