Chapter 19

Marcus invited Ren to his apartment without proposing an agenda.

Ren arrived carrying tomatoes from the Saturday market and a bottle of mineral water. Marcus took the tomatoes.

"Is this a hostess gift?"

"You admitted to killing mint. I brought something already dead."

"Thoughtful."

Marcus's apartment in Harlem was quieter than Ren expected.

Walnut shelves, jazz records, one surviving rubber plant, and photographs of Detroit family gatherings arranged without symmetry.

No negotiation textbooks were visible in the living room.

Ren suspected they had been quarantined for the evening.

They cooked pasta together. Marcus chopped garlic with unnecessary precision. Ren tore basil by hand and did not point out the irony of the plant's survival.

The meal was ordinary enough for attraction to become more dangerous.

In Society rooms, desire had a declared purpose.

Here, Marcus passed him cheese and brushed Ren's fingers by accident.

Here, a man could stay because dinner stretched into music and discover he had entered a relationship without a threshold bell.

Afterward they sat on the floor beside the record player, backs against the sofa.

"How was Beatriz?" Ren asked.

Marcus looked at him carefully. "Emotionally, or are you requesting private detail?"

"Emotionally. She told me you had a date. She did not report anything."

"She was direct. Generous. She saw when I became uncertain and did not turn it into a problem to solve."

Ren heard the change in Marcus's voice. "You slept together."

"Yes. That affects sexual-health information before the group moves forward. We used a barrier. No health disclosures changed."

"Thank you."

Jealousy touched Ren too—not proof of scarcity, only the ache of imagining tenderness he had not shared. He let it pass through without pretending he was above it.

"And you and Beatriz?" Marcus asked.

"We had sex. No penetration that changes the barrier plan. I used my mouth and hand; she used hers."

The level of detail was chosen, enough for health and emotional reality, not a recital.

Marcus's gaze dropped briefly to Ren's mouth.

"Jealous?" Ren asked.

"Yes."

"Good."

Marcus laughed. "She said the same thing to me about cost."

"Then she is influencing us."

"Dangerous woman."

Silence settled with music around it. Ren leaned his head back against the sofa. Marcus watched him.

"I want to kiss you," Marcus said.

"You are improving at declarative sentences."

"Do you want me to?"

"Yes."

Marcus turned, one knee bending on the rug. He touched Ren's jaw and kissed him. Their first kiss at the hotel had been an answer. This one was an exploration with time behind it. Ren opened his mouth. Marcus's hand moved to the back of his neck, steady and warm.

"Come here," Marcus murmured.

The phrase struck wrong—not because Ren objected to moving closer, but because the tone carried the polished edge Marcus used when guiding a room.

Ren placed a hand on his chest. "Stop."

Marcus released him immediately. "Stopped."

"That voice."

"What about it?"

"You sounded like you were facilitating me into the correct position."

Marcus sat back. Defensiveness flashed, then steadied. "I meant it as a request."

"I know. It did not feel like one."

"I'm sorry. What would equality feel like right now?"

The question was thoughtful and dangerously close to another professional prompt.

Ren exhaled. "Fewer perfect questions. Tell me what happened in you."

Marcus looked down. "I wanted you closer. I was afraid asking plainly would make the wanting vulnerable, so I used a tone that usually produces movement."

"That is honest."

"And unfair."

"Yes."

Marcus did not ask Ren to make the apology easier. He remained warm, but the warmth did not demand continuation.

"What do you want now?" he asked, the words rougher this time.

"I want to kiss you again. I want no hierarchy tonight. If I change position, it is because I choose the position, not because your voice guides me there."

"I want that too."

Ren moved first. He straddled Marcus's lap on the rug, equal not because their bodies occupied the same height but because the posture belonged to his initiative. Marcus's hands settled at his waist after Ren nodded.

The second kiss was hotter. Ren took Marcus's lower lip, felt the man's composure give under his mouth, and pressed closer. Marcus's erection hardened beneath him. Ren rolled his hips once.

Marcus groaned. "May I touch you under your shirt?"

"Yes."

Warm hands moved over Ren's back, fingertips tracing the line beside his spine. Ren opened Marcus's shirt and kissed the hollow at his throat. He wanted to discover what made this man stop speaking.

"Take it off," Ren said.

Marcus obeyed without the act acquiring a ritual. He pulled the shirt over his shoulders and let it fall.

Ren placed both palms on his chest. Marcus was leaner than his suits suggested, strong through the shoulders, silver hair scattered across dark skin. A faint surgical scar marked one side near his ribs.

"Appendix?" Ren asked.

"A very dramatic gallbladder."

"I respect an organ that makes an exit."

Marcus laughed, and Ren kissed him again to feel the laugh disappear between them.

They moved to the bedroom by mutual impatience rather than direction. Marcus stopped at the bedside.

"Health details remain current. Condoms in the drawer. Lube beside them. I would like to touch you, use my mouth, and be inside you if you want that. No authority play."

"I want your hands and mouth. I may want penetration. I will decide when we get there. I want to touch you and taste you."

"Yes."

They undressed each other. Marcus stood naked before Ren without the protective line of his suit. His cock was hard, his body visibly aroused and not performing certainty. Ren kissed his chest and moved lower, following the line of hair across his abdomen.

"Ren." Marcus's hand hovered above his shoulder. "May I touch you?"

"Yes. Not to guide."

Marcus set his palm there lightly.

Ren took him into his mouth.

The sound Marcus made was the one Ren had wanted since the library: a sentence lost completely. Ren used his tongue, then drew back to stroke him with one hand. Marcus's fingers flexed on his shoulder but did not direct.

"Good?" Ren asked.

"Yes. God, yes."

"Tell me if you want different."

"Slower. I want this to last."

Ren slowed. He enjoyed the equality of receiving Marcus's preference without treating it as command or criticism. He enjoyed the man's hips trying not to move until Ren said, "You may move if you want."

Marcus did, gently, following Ren's rhythm rather than taking it over.

Before he came, Marcus asked Ren to stop. Ren kissed the head once and stood.

"My turn," Marcus said, then checked himself. "I want my turn. May I?"

"Yes."

Ren lay back. Marcus kissed down his body, pausing at the scar below his rib, then took Ren's cock into his mouth with unhurried attention. Ren's back arched.

Marcus was skilled, but what moved Ren more was the absence of expertise as display. He asked with touch, changed when Ren answered, and smiled against Ren's thigh when a sound escaped him.

"Do not become smug," Ren said.

Marcus lifted his head. "I am receiving positive feedback."

"You are unbearable. Continue."

"Is that an order?"

"A public service."

Marcus returned, one hand wrapped around the base of Ren's cock. Pleasure built quickly. Ren touched Marcus's shoulder, then said, "Stop."

Marcus did.

The room remained warm.

Ren breathed until the edge receded. "I want you inside me."

Marcus's face changed with desire and concern. "What position?"

"On our sides. Face me. I do not want to be arranged away from you."

"Yes."

They prepared together. Marcus put on a condom. Ren used lubricant and then guided Marcus's hand, letting touch open him without transferring control. When he was ready, they lay facing each other. Ren hooked one leg over Marcus's hip.

"Slowly," he said.

Marcus pressed into him. The first stretch was intense. Ren breathed and held Marcus's gaze.

"Pause."

Marcus stopped. No interpretation. No praise designed to move him onward.

"Kiss me," Ren said.

Marcus did, softly, while Ren adjusted.

"More now."

Marcus entered deeper until their bodies met. Ren felt full, exposed, and entirely equal. He chose the first movement, rocking his hips. Marcus answered.

Their rhythm built slowly. Marcus's hand spread over Ren's back. Ren stroked himself between them, then took Marcus's hand and placed it there instead.

"Touch me."

Marcus did. The angle brought pleasure through Ren in converging waves. He watched Marcus lose precision, watched need roughen his mouth.

"Tell me," Ren said.

"I want you. I want this. I do not know how to say it without sounding inadequate."

"Inadequate is honest."

Marcus laughed once and then thrust deeper. Ren's breath broke. He tightened his leg around Marcus and met the movement.

His orgasm came first, hot over Marcus's hand and his own abdomen. He said Marcus's name without irony. Marcus followed, body trembling as he came inside the condom, forehead pressed to Ren's.

They remained close until sensation softened.

Afterward, Marcus disposed of the condom, brought warm cloths and water, and asked Ren whether he wanted touch or space.

"Touch. Not analysis."

Marcus lay behind him with an arm across his waist. He kissed Ren's shoulder.

"Thank you for stopping me earlier," he said.

"Thank you for not making the correction cost affection."

Marcus's arm tightened, not restraint, only acknowledgment. "Being corrected and still wanted feels safer than being right all the time."

Ren turned within his arms. "Do not become addicted. I intend to be wrong occasionally."

"I will prepare a framework."

"Marcus."

"Sorry."

They laughed together in the dark, lovers with no borrowed hierarchy between them.
