Chapter 5 Dinner Preparations
I was lost in thought and did not notice night had fallen.
A knock sounded at the door. I assumed it was Butler Li and opened it quickly.
Mother lowered her voice and hissed, "Come out now. Your Uncle Song and Song Chengyuan will be back soon. If you act like earlier, don't force me to get rough."
She had never knocked before entering my room. The identity of Mrs. Song clearly restrained her somewhat.
I lowered my eyes and put on the obedient expression she liked most. "I understand, Mother."
I followed her downstairs to wait outside for Song Chengyuan and his father, Song Yu.
After a long wait, a stretched Rolls-Royce finally pulled up.
Song Yu stepped out and immediately draped his suit jacket over Mother's shoulders.
"Why come outside? The wind is strong. What if the child catches a cold?"
Mother acted like a girl newly in love and tugged the jacket higher.
"It's fine. We didn't wait long."
Song Yu turned to me, standing obediently beside Mother.
I gave a shy smile. "Hello, Uncle Song."
Song Yu smiled kindly. "Hello. This must be Xuxu."
Mother pushed me forward. "She has a gentle nature and doesn't talk much."
"A gentle personality is good. Song Chengyuan angers me every day. I've always wanted a daughter. Now my wish is fulfilled."
I smiled obediently. Some words were best left unexamined.
My own parents did not love me. How could I expect anything from a stranger?
