Chapter 20 Words Over Dinner
Song Chengyuan paused and looked up at me. "People who like you will like whatever you do. People who do not like you will dislike whatever you do."
Another unexpected answer. When he was away from the Song residence, he seemed easier to get along with.
"I also want to stop caring about many things, but I have so little that I pay extra attention to what I do have."
"You will have more and more in the future."
Song Chengyuan still looked casual, as if nothing mattered to him.
Yet that one glance pulled me out of the blurred reality.
I had to admit I found some comfort from him.
I smiled lightly and spoke softly. "Yes, I will."
I knew the softness I showed hid a strength that would not break easily.
From that dinner, I began to fit into Song Chengyuan's life.
I went grocery shopping with him, watched movies at home, and read beside him while he worked.
Traces of me appeared around the house: hair ties, half-eaten chips, a carrot-shaped cup on the desk.
The peaceful life I had always wanted seemed to have arrived.
I reminded myself not to get used to it. He was only keeping a canary.
My life had changed, but I was still under someone else's control.
Song Chengyuan treated me better than before, but I still lived by his moods.
Without my own ability to stand on my own, I would eventually be discarded when I grew old.
