Chapter 38-The First Kiss That Was Hers

After Ganga's garden, something changed.

Not everything.

Vinaya still mistrusted hope.

Vikram still carried guilt.

But the distance between them was no longer endless.

They began walking together.

Sometimes through the gardens.

Sometimes along the outer walls where the mountains turned gold at sunset.

They spoke about ordinary things.

That was new.

Council.

Books.

Balram's terrible jokes.

Whether Kalyani would ever return what she borrowed.

One evening, rain trapped them beneath a pavilion.

Vinaya stood near the edge watching water fall across the garden.

Vikram watched her.

"You're staring."

"I know."

She turned.

"That is unsettling."

"I can stop."

He did not.

Vinaya's heartbeat changed.

"Why are you looking at me like that?"

Vikram stepped closer.

He could have lied.

Instead:

"Because I want to kiss you."

Vinaya froze.

The rain seemed suddenly louder.

Vikram stopped several feet away.

"I will not unless you want me to."

Her breathing became shallow.

Memory moved beneath the moment.

Another night.

His hands.

Another woman's name.

Vikram saw the change in her face.

He immediately stepped back.

"Forget I asked."

Something about that broke through her fear.

"No."

He stopped.

Vinaya looked at him.

"I didn't say no."

His eyes met hers.

She swallowed.

"I need..."

"What?"

She did not know how to say it.

Then Vikram understood.

He approached slowly.

Not touching.

Not yet.

"Vinaya."

Her eyes filled instantly.

He said it again.

"Vinaya."

Her name.

Hers.

No ghost.

No mistake.

No Priya.

Vikram lifted one hand.

Stopped before touching her cheek.

Vinaya leaned into it.

His breath caught.

"Vinaya," he whispered a third time.

Then he kissed her.

Softly.

No urgency.

No possession.

Just warmth.

A question.

Vinaya stood very still.

The kiss ended almost immediately.

Vikram stepped back.

His eyes searched hers.

"I am sorry if—"

Vinaya caught the front of his tunic.

He stopped speaking.

She rose onto her toes.

And kissed him back.

This time, she chose him.

Andfor the first time in their marriage, when Vikram held his wife, he saw no onebut Vinaya
