Chapter 39-One Night Chosen

The second time Vinaya entered Vikram's bedchamber, she went there by choice.

That difference mattered more than anything.

Months had passed since their kiss beneath the rain-soaked pavilion. Vikram had not hurried her afterward.

He had kissed her again.

Many times.

Sometimes beneath the trees in Ganga's garden. Sometimes after an argument when Vinaya was still pretending to be annoyed with him. Once in the library, where Kalyani had nearly discovered them and Vinaya had laughed so hard that Vikram threatened to ban his sister from the western wing.

But he never pushed beyond what Vinaya offered.

He waited.

And slowly, painfully, Vinaya began to trust the waiting.

That evening they had dined privately.

Nothing had been planned.

They talked about Samudrapuri.

About the school Vinaya still dreamed of building.

About Ganga.

They could speak her name now without the entire world collapsing.

Sometimes.

When Vikram walked Vinaya back to her chamber, they stopped outside her door.

"Good night."

Vinaya looked at him.

"Good night."

Neither moved.

Vikram smiled faintly.

"You have to open the door."

"I know."

"You are standing in front of it."

"I am aware."

His smile deepened.

Vinaya hated how handsome he became when he smiled.

She also loved it.

That realization no longer terrified her as much as it once had.

"Vikram."

"Yes?"

She reached for his hand.

His expression changed.

"Stay."

One word.

He did not move.

"Vinaya."

"I know what I'm asking."

His thumb brushed slowly over her knuckles.

"Are you certain?"

She appreciated the question.

She also resented that another man's concern might have irritated her while Vikram's was necessary because of what he had done.

"Yes."

He searched her face.

Vinaya stepped closer.

"Don't make me say it twelve times."

A quiet laugh escaped him.

"There she is."

"Who?"

"The terrifying woman everyone insists is shy."

She almost smiled.

Then she kissed him.

Vikram's arms came around her carefully.

The kiss deepened, but there was no desperation in it.

No ghost.

No confusion.

When he whispered her name, Vinaya felt something inside her loosen.

"Vinaya."

She closed her eyes.

Hers.

Always hers now.

She touched his face.

Vikram turned and kissed her palm.

That simple gesture nearly undid her.

Their first night had been defined by everything absent between them.

Recognition.

Trust.

Choice.

This night contained all three.

When Vikram lifted her into his arms, Vinaya startled.

"I can walk."

"I know."

"Then put me down."

"No."

"Vikram."

He kissed her forehead.

She stopped complaining.

For once there was laughter between kisses.

Tenderness where there had once been confusion.

And when nervousness briefly tightened Vinaya's body, Vikram noticed immediately.

He stopped.

"Look at me."

She did.

"Who am I looking at?"

The question brought tears unexpectedly to her eyes.

She knew what he meant.

"Me."

"Who?"

Her lips trembled.

"Vinaya."

Vikram touched his forehead to hers.

"My wife."

Not Priya.

Never Priya.

Vinaya kissed him.

The lamps burned low as they rediscovered one another slowly, without ghosts between them, until conversation faded into whispered names and the night became theirs alone.

Much later, Vinaya fell asleep against Vikram's chest.

His arm remained around her.

For several hours, she slept peacefully.

Then morning came.

Sunlight touched her face.

Vinaya opened her eyes.

She felt the warmth of a man beside her.

Saw Vikram sleeping.

And suddenly—

She wasn't remembering last night anymore.

She was remembering the first.
