Chapter Twenty Six #3
“Not a problem, Sawyer. You’ve clearly been through something.
This is the least I can do.” Once she had stitched up the edges, Sawyer pulled his shirt off and she got to work rubbing some cream on his burns and rebandaging them.
“These are healing pretty nicely. You’re still going to have some scarring, but all things considered, could be worse. ”
“How long before they heal?”
“Depends. I’d give it another few weeks until they’re fully healed. Try to take it easy.”
“Right…”
Lindsey washed her hands and changed her gloves then moved onto Benji. “What’s going on with you?”
“I think I just need some stitches in my leg.” He rolled up the right leg of his pajama pants and showed off the wound from the bullet.
She nodded. “I would agree with that assessment. Anything else?”
“No, I don’t think so. Got a tooth pulled out but nothing much to do about that.”
“Explains the bruising.”
“Yep,” he paused. “Actually, I do have this wound on my side. It was infected pretty badly so maybe you can look at that,” he paused. “I imagine it's common that I feel like I have the flu after an infection?”
“You’re likely still battling it in some fashion, so it's quite common to feel like that,” she lifted his shirt.
“It's not looking too bad though. I've seen worse,” she offered with a smile. Lindsey was quite diligent when it came to stitching up his wounds and making sure they weren’t going to get infected or reinfected. She seemed like a good person and they were lucky to have her there. Sawyer especially. He was going to get his hand fixed. Benji could tell he was just buzzing from that news. He didn’t blame him.
It was really exciting to hear that the hole in your hand could be fixed.
Before long, she finished patching both of them up and she took her leave. She said she would tell Jackson when she would be back tomorrow so they knew when to expect her. Benji made sure to lock the door behind her and released a soft breath before he said, “That went well.”
“Really well, actually. She’s nice.”
“She is. Not the best bed side manner but I appreciate that she’s a straight shooter,” He walked away from the door and moseyed his way into the kitchen so he could start making them dinner. “You hungry?”
Sawyer sighed. “Yeah, I am now,” he stood up from the couch and Benji immediately waved his hand towards him. “What?”
“Sit back down. I got this.”
“I can help.”
“It’s fine, Sawyer. It’s just some pasta. Won’t take long.”
With a huff, he sat back down. While Benji got to work on cooking them dinner, Sawyer began to flip through the channels that the TV had, which wasn’t much from what Benji had gathered.
They might end up watching Steel Magnolias.
Benji wasn’t sure he could deal with watching a dog die. That might just do him in.
Luckily, Sawyer agreed and they did end up watching Steel Magnolias while they ate the pasta.
It was pretty good. The store bought sauce wasn’t anything to write home about but considering they both hadn’t had much to eat as of late, it tasted like it was a gift from the Gods.
Neither one of them fully intended on getting sucked up into the movie, but by the end of it, they were both fully invested in it.
And it was just as sad as Benji thought it would be.
Once it was over, Sawyer turned off the TV and the men just gazed at each other, trying to process what they had just watched, before they laughed.
They needed to or else they might start crying and no one wanted that.
“Jesus…” Benji laughed out and shook his head. “That was a miserable movie.”
“It really was,” Sawyer ran his fingers through his hair and shook his head. “I don’t think I can watch another one tonight.”
“No, not at all.”
“I’m actually pretty exhausted.”
He nodded. “Yeah, totally get it. Go to bed. I got the dishes.”
“No, no. I can do them before I go.”
Benji reached over and grabbed the empty bowl from Sawyer. “It’s not a big deal, man. I got it,” he stood up. “Plus, I don't think you could with your hand anyway. Go to bed. You had a crazy day.”
“So did you!”
“Yeah, well. I think yours was worse.”
Sawyer frowned a bit at that comment, turning his gaze away from Benji. He hated reminding him about Cole, but there was really no denying his statement. “Well, tomorrow I’m on chores duty.”
“Okay, deal,” he said and smiled a bit before walking towards the kitchen again.
Sawyer stood up from the couch and headed towards the stairs then paused for a moment. “Thanks, Benji.”
“No problem.”
“No, I mean thanks for everything today. If you weren’t there, I’d probably be dead.”
Benji hated how accurate that statement was.
If he hadn’t been there to drive the car, Sawyer probably would have crashed and could have died that way.
And if that didn’t kill him, Milo or one of his thugs probably would have found him and finished the job.
That thought made his stomach knot. “You’re welcome,” he finally answered, voice softer than he had intended.
Sawyer nodded his head a couple times before he headed upstairs, leaving Benji alone in the kitchen to finish up the dishes from their dinner.
