Chapter 10
Betrayal at the Royal Court
The royal council assembled before sunset.
The king sat at the head of the chamber while Kael stood before him.
"You disobeyed my orders," the king said.
"I followed destiny."
"Destiny does not rule this kingdom."
Kael's eyes hardened.
"Perhaps that is the problem."
The council erupted in whispers.
The king raised his hand.
Silence returned.
"You will end this bond."
Kael refused.
"I cannot."
"You can, and you will."
Elara entered the chamber.
Everyone turned toward her.
She walked calmly to Kael's side.
"If the kingdom is afraid of me, then tell them the truth."
The king's expression darkened.
"You don't understand what you are asking."
"I understand that my family was betrayed."
A council member suddenly stood.
"She is dangerous."
Another agreed.
"She should be imprisoned."
Kael stepped forward.
"Anyone who threatens her answers to me."
The chamber became silent.
Then the doors opened.
A wounded royal guard stumbled inside.
"Your Majesty..."
The king rose.
"What happened?"
"The eastern fortress has fallen."
Everyone froze.
The guard continued.
"The enemy knew exactly where our defenses were weakest."
Kael looked around the chamber.
There was a traitor among them.
And the traitor knew everything.
