Dusk gathered around the longhall when three scouts came out of the northern treeline in wolf form, sides heaving.

They shifted at the edge of the clearing, and the lead scout, a young beta named Corin, stood with his chest still heaving.

Scott stood near the longhall with one hand on the round swell of his belly.

Fynn and Norrix had already moved to flank him, and Rukheim pushed through the gathering pack.

"Report," Rukheim said.

"The northern pack crossed the river this morning," Corin said.

"At least thirty wolves. They're moving toward the old watchtower, and their scouts are already probing the ridge.

" He swallowed. "They know about Scott. The shaman has been telling their alpha for weeks that the prime omega and the child are a prize worth taking. "

The crowd shifted. Rukheim's face stayed hard, and his eyes went to the dark trees. "How far out?"

"They'll reach our border by dawn."

Norrix spoke. "Then we meet them at the ridge before they reach the dens."

Rukheim nodded. "We move the vulnerable into the deep dens before midnight.

Every able warrior takes position along the northern line.

We do not wait for them to break through.

" He turned to Fynn. "You and the fast hunters take the western flank.

Norrix, you hold the center with me. Corin, send runners to the southern patrols and call them north. "

Fynn's hand found Scott's. "What about Scott?"

"He goes to the deep den with Mera and the other omegas." Rukheim looked at Scott. "You will be guarded."

Scott lifted his chin. "I'll go where I'm needed. But before dawn, I want the bonding ceremony done. The pack should see this family made whole before the fight."

Rukheim held his gaze, then nodded. "Then we gather in the clearing within the hour."

Scott's wolf had slept since the pregnancy began.

Mera had told him shifting would endanger the child, and so his other self lay quiet inside him, waiting.

He had run these woods as a boy, and now he would wait through the battle behind stone walls.

The thought sat heavy in his chest, but he did not argue.

He walked with Fynn and Norrix to the main clearing, where torches were already being lit against the coming dark.

The bonding ceremony took place under the torchlight.

The same rite had been planned for the full moon, and now it came early with war on the northern border.

Every wolf who could stand gathered in a wide circle.

Scott stood in the center with his three alphas around him, his belly high and round, his hands steady despite the fear.

Rukheim spoke first, his voice carrying across the clearing. "I take Scott as my mate. I name the child he carries as my own, and I will guard this family with my life." He looked at Norrix and Fynn. "You two are my brothers in this bond. We will hold the line together."

Norrix spoke next, his voice rough but clear. "I bind myself to Scott and to the child. I will fight beside both of you and raise this child as mine."

Fynn's voice came softer, but every wolf heard him. "I give my heart and my teeth to this bond. Scott is mine to love, and the child will know me as father. We are one family."

The three alphas shifted together. Rukheim became a black wolf with a thick coat and broad shoulders.

Norrix became a scarred gray wolf with old wounds pale across his muzzle.

Fynn became a lean tawny wolf with quick, intelligent eyes.

They lifted their heads and howled, three voices braided into one long call.

The pack answered, and the sound rolled out over the trees toward the northern ridge.

Scott stood in the center of that sound, tears cool on his cheeks, one hand pressed to the child moving inside him. When the howls faded, he let Fynn and Norrix walk him to Rukheim's chambers.

Inside the nest, Scott settled against a pile of cushions.

His belly rose between them, and the lamplight made the curve of it warm.

Rukheim stood near the door, still carrying the sharp energy of command.

Norrix knelt to remove Scott's shoes. Fynn sat behind him and braced Scott's back with his chest.

Scott looked at the three of them. "I want all of you," he said. "Before the fight. I want to feel every one of you."

Rukheim crossed to the nest and knelt in front of him. "We will be careful with you and the child. Say river if you need us to stop."

Scott nodded. "River."

Norrix kissed the inside of Scott's knee. "We'll listen."

Fynn pressed his mouth to Scott's neck. "We always listen."

They opened him with careful hands and mouths.

Norrix worked his tongue into Scott while Fynn stroked his cock and Rukheim kissed the stretch of his belly and whispered to the child.

When Norrix pushed inside, the thrusts were deep and rolling, never jarring, one hand held flat over Scott's stomach.

Fynn stayed at Scott's back and spoke soft words against his ear.

Rukheim fed his cock between Scott's lips and let Scott set the depth.

Scott came first around Norrix, then again around Rukheim's fingers, and when Norrix's knot began to swell, Scott pulled his mouth free long enough to gasp out, "Lock me. "

Norrix locked them together and flooded him while Fynn and Rukheim held him through it.

After the knot eased, they shifted without losing contact.

Rukheim took Scott in slow, possessive strokes while Fynn and Norrix kissed his chest and shoulders.

Fynn finished the night inside him, knotting him one last time while the others stayed pressed close.

They cleaned Scott with warm cloths and lay tangled around him, all four sets of hands resting somewhere on the mound of his belly.

A sentry's howl cut the dark before first light.

Rukheim was up first, already reaching for his weapons. Norrix and Fynn dressed quickly. Scott let Fynn help him into a heavy tunic and soft boots, and then they walked him through the dim compound to the deep den built into the hillside behind the longhall.

Mera met them at the entrance with her medical bag over her shoulder. Other omegas and the youngest children were already filing inside, their faces pale in the lantern light. A guard of three betas stood at the stone door.

Rukheim pulled Scott close and kissed him hard. "Stay with Mera. Keep the bond open. You will feel us."

Scott pressed his forehead to Rukheim's. "I'll feel you. All of you."

Norrix hugged him from the side, one hand on his belly. "We'll come back to you."

Fynn kissed him last, soft and lingering. "I love you. Keep the baby calm."

Scott managed a smile. "I'll try."

He watched them shift and disappear into the trees with the other warriors. Then he walked into the den and sat on a low pallet against the stone wall. The women and children settled around him, and the heavy door swung shut.

The first clash reached him through the bond before any sound carried into the den.

Scott closed his eyes and let himself sink into the three threads that connected him to his alphas.

Fynn was a quick, moving pressure, darting low and snapping at legs and flanks.

Norrix was a steady hammer, meeting other wolves with force that drove them back.

Rukheim was the center of the line, huge and certain, and Scott felt the shock of the rival alpha's charge through the pack bond.

The pack-within-a-pack moved as one. Scott felt Fynn circle behind the enemy's left flank while Norrix closed off an escape route.

He felt Rukheim drive the rival alpha toward the trap they had set.

The northern wolves fought with hunger, but they were fighting on unfamiliar ground, and their shaman had promised them an easy prize.

That promise broke the moment their alpha's legs buckled under Rukheim's weight.

Rukheim's jaws closed around the rival alpha's throat. The submission was instant, a high whine that cut through the bond. The northern pack scattered, tails low, leaving their dead and wounded behind.

Scott opened his eyes and found Mera watching him. "It's done," he said, and his voice shook. "They won."

The door swung open before the sun had fully risen. Rukheim came through first, his tunic torn and blood drying along his arms. Norrix and Fynn followed, both limping, their faces streaked with dirt. Scott pushed to his feet, and his water broke in a warm rush that soaked through the thin blankets.

Pain rolled through him, deep and sudden, and he clutched at Rukheim's shoulder as the alpha reached him.

"The child has decided the war is over," Scott gasped.

Mera was already moving, calling for water and clean cloths. Rukheim lifted Scott into his arms and carried him to the cleanest pallet in the den's inner room. Norrix and Fynn hovered at his sides, their own wounds forgotten.

"The shaman is dead," Norrix said, his voice low and urgent. "He fell when their line broke."

Fynn gripped Scott's hand. "The rival alpha yielded. Rukheim offered terms."

Rukheim set Scott down gently and looked into his eyes. "His pack withdraws beyond the northern river. They will send tribute each full moon and keep their wolves on their side of the water. If they cross again, I will end his line." He kissed Scott's forehead. "It's over."

A new contraction rolled through Scott, stronger than the first, and he cried out. Mera knelt between his legs and pressed a hand to the swell of his belly. "The labor has begun. The baby is coming."

Rukheim, Norrix, and Fynn stayed around him, bloodied and exhausted and grinning through their fear. The first gray light of dawn came through the cracks in the den door. Scott held onto Fynn's hand and let the pain carry him toward the next thing, the one that mattered most.
