Chapter 29

I could feel that I’d gotten a lot of sun, and my hair was brittle and dry.

I had sand in my ears and traces of salt on my clothes.

All the same, I felt more desirable than I’d ever felt in my life.

Maybe it had to do with the glances Vince kept stealing.

With that look on his face that immediately catapulted me back to the Jeep’s back seat.

I could still feel him there. Between my legs.

Could still hear the noises he made in my ear whenever I closed my eyes.

“All good?” he asked, his hand draped loosely across the steering wheel, a lazy smile on his lips. His hair was messy, most likely thanks to me.

“Very good.” Grinning, I lowered my eyes.

And then out of the corner of my eye I noticed his hand reaching for mine over the center console.

As if it was the most natural thing in the world, he wrapped his fingers around mine.

And that’s how we stayed until we turned into his driveway.

The fact that he didn’t drop me off at Kay’s didn’t surprise me any longer, and I accepted him walking me home without any argument too.

We walked side by side in mutual silence.

Every now and then our hands brushed against each other, maybe by accident, maybe not.

But the fleeting contact was always enough to send a tingle through my body that I could feel all the way to the tips of my toes.

Before we reached Kay’s gate, I stopped. I didn’t want us to set off her motion detectors. Not yet.

“Thank you for taking me.”

“Anytime.”

There was something suggestive in his words, or maybe I was just reading into them. Or just wanted to hear them.

“Dream something nice,” he whispered into my ear, but this time I definitely wasn’t imagining something suggestive.

I played with the thought of kissing him goodbye but decided against it at the last moment. He waved goodbye and slipped off into the night. Suddenly he stopped and turned around.

“I know what bothers me about it now.”

“What?”

“Making out.” He shrugged. “It sounds too trivial.”

With eyes like saucers and a wildly beating heart, I watched him go.
