Finally, Brooks slides back into the booth beside me, slinging his arm over the back of the seat.
I nestle into his body and reach for my drink, listening to everyone’s chatter while I watch them all interact.
Mai and Jeremy are sitting beside me. They look happy.
I’ve never seen or heard of them arguing.
Probably because they lack the passion that Brooks and I have.
It’s sad if you think about it. Brooks and I argue a lot, but it’s only because we care so much, and it always leads to intense, mind-blowing orgasms, which makes it all worth it.
I move my line of sight over to Sam, who’s sitting on the other side of Luna.
If someone saw them, they’d think they were a couple.
They look good together, but they’re both so attractive that they’d look good with anyone.
Sam’s eyes meet mine, and he holds my gaze until Brooks squeezes my shoulder, pulling me closer towards him, forcing my eyes away from Sam.
I bury my face into the side of Brooks’ neck, taking in his smell.
The scent of his skin makes me feel warm and safe, like I’m already home.
I kiss the sensitive spot on his neck, and he shivers and laughs as he looks down at me and kisses me softly on my cheek.
I’m not sure what’s going on with Sam tonight or why he’s having this effect on me, but I’m choosing to ignore it.
I place my hand on Brooks’ thigh under the table and glide it up towards the crutch of his pants, desperate to feel his desire in my hand.
His body jolts under my touch, but he doesn’t push my hand away.
Instead, his fingers tighten and pinch the side of my waist. I smile into his neck as I gently rub until he hardens.
I know all the girls here are waiting in line to offer themselves to him–I could tell by the way they watched him with curious eyes when we entered.
It didn’t matter that his arm was around me.
But here I am turning him on in front of them all, and they don’t even know it.
Brooks brings his lips to the side of my face and lets out a deep moan into my ear, which instantly soaks my panties.
Suddenly, Luna slams her hands down on the table and stands up from her seat, and for a second, I’m worried that I’ve been caught in my moment of lust with Brooks.
But then I hear a familiar song that Luna and I used to dance around my bedroom to while we sang into hairbrushes.
Luna pushes past Sam and out of the booth, holding out her hand to me.
I look up at Brooks, questioning what I should do.
He nods, giving me the approval I needed to remove my hand from his erection.
I stand from my seat, leaning forward, letting my butt brush past Brooks’ face as I slide out of the booth.
“We’re dancing!” she shouts over the music, which has grown louder.
I laugh, letting her drag me over to the dance floor.
We shake our hips and sing loudly in each other’s faces just like we used to when we were younger.
I miss jumping around and being goofy with her.
Usually, I don’t have the confidence to dance like this in public, but the alcohol has given me the courage I need, and Luna’s energy is contagious.
With an overwhelming rush of emotions, I grab her and pull her into a hug.
All at once, I realise how much I missed her.
She hugs me back tightly, placing her hands on my hips.
She lightly pushes me away before taking my hand and spinning me around.
I bump into something solid, and when I look up, I see Brooks’ face peering down at me with a beaming smile that spreads to his dimples.
I turn around so that my back is to him, and he places his hands on my hips.
“You are so sexy,” he whispers, pulling me closer to him.
I move my body to the music, slowly teasing him.
The group forms a circle nearby. Song after song plays.
Each one is a flashback to our high school days.
My feet are beginning to hurt, but the alcohol makes me not care.
With my back still to Brooks, I rest my head on his shoulder and lean back to look at him.
He bends his head down so that our lips meet, and I reach up to touch his face.
His hands firmly hold my hips, moving them to the rhythm of the song while I grind up against him.
All of a sudden, an eerie tension fills the room as if the world is standing still in the face of impending doom.
I break away from Brooks’ lips to look over at the group.
Luna is watching me with a worried pinch on her brow.
She points to someone new to the group, Harper.
She is wearing a tight black mini-dress that shows all of her curves, especially her thin, toned stomach.
She looks good. Her straight blonde hair frames her face perfectly and complements her flawless makeup.
I know the second Brooks notices her. His body stiffens slightly, and his hands drop from my hips.
“I thought she wasn’t going to be here,” I whisper into his ear. He looks down at me with an annoyed expression, like this is my fault.
“Hey, Brooks,” Harper says, looking through me.
She approaches us, and as she does, Brooks steps around me to embrace her in a hug, leaving me behind.
She wraps her hands around his waist and I can’t help but notice how close they are to touching his butt.
I shift my weight from foot to foot awkwardly, not quite knowing what to do.
Suddenly the music isn’t enjoyable, it’s earsplittingly loud, thumping in my chest like a heart attack.
Brooks pulls away from the hug first but leaves his arm draped over her shoulders, the same way he was holding me earlier.
Harper does the same and leaves one arm wrapped around his waist, bunching his t-shirt into her delicate fist. They’ve closed the gap in the circle of friends, leaving me on the outside, facing their backs.
A chill runs through my body. I want to run towards him, rip them apart and take back my rightful place at his side.
But at the same time, I realise: they look good together.
The soft material from her tight black dress clings to her butt and I wonder if she’s wearing panties or a thong underneath.
My black dress makes me look like a child at Sunday school.
I’m pathetic. And all I can do is think about how perfect she is.
No wonder he doesn’t want to touch me when she’s around.
Why would anyone choose me over her? Within seconds, Luna is at my side, her hand wrapping around mine, but I barely feel it.
“Come on, let’s take a break, my feet are killing me,” she says, dragging me over to the side of the dance floor.
“Did you see that?”
“It’s probably nothing. Everyone’s drunk, and you keep telling me that they’re friends.”
Where is my best friend, and who is this impostor?
I know I’ve been begging her to be supportive, but when Brooks has another girl in his arms, she’s supposed to be on my side.
I glare at her, anger filling me. I may be drunk, but I don’t think I’m overreacting.
Harper is the other woman, one that I will never be able to live up to, and Luna is supposed to be my best friend.
“I’m sorry. Did I blink and miss the part when you and Harper became best friends?”
“I’m just saying maybe he’s trying to keep her happy to stop her from causing a scene.” She raises her hands in surrender. “Hey, you want me to be team Brooks, so I’m team Brooks. If you want me to hate him, I can do that too, but you need to make up your mind because I’m trying here.”
I know she’s right. I’m being a bitch, just like Brooks says I can be.
“I know. I’m sorry. You’ve been amazing tonight. I just… I just hate her. I need another drink.”
“Are you sure?” Luna asks, concern in her eyes. “We’ve already had a lot, and you’re starting to slur your words a little.”
“I can have a shot if I want!” I yell, trying desperately to control my speech and failing miserably.
Maybe she’s right, but I like the way my brain is feeling fuzzy.
It’s keeping the darkness at bay. If I stop drinking now, I’ll collapse into a wailing, pitiful mess, right at Brooks’ feet, and then he’ll know, he’ll see that he’s too good for me.
I pull Luna over to the bar, hoping to persuade her the same way she has persuaded me in the past.
“Two Jager Bombs please,” I call out to the bartender, praying that he doesn’t hear my slurred words and refuse to take my order.
“Just one, please. Can I actually grab a water?” Luna asks, fanning herself with her hand.
I roll my eyes. When did Luna become such a party pooper?
The bartender places our drinks on the bar in front of us.
I reach out and drop the Jager shot into the glass of Red Bull as Luna takes her drink of water from the bar.
We clink them together before bringing the glasses to our lips.
“Come on, let’s go dance and show him what he’s missing,” Luna says, placing her glass back down on the bar.
I order one more shot, downing it quickly as Luna grabs my hand and drags me back to the dance floor, collecting Gaia on the way.
She heads towards a group of guys who are standing on the edge of the floor and asks them to come dance with her.
They immediately straighten up and follow.
