8. Jack
Jack
Jack approached the Starfish Inn, his heart pounding as he saw Olivia standing on the porch.
He'd changed his shirt three times before settling on a soft blue flannel shirt, and he couldn't remember the last time he'd been this nervous about a date. But then again, Olivia Hartley wasn't just any date.
As he neared, Olivia's face lit up, and he felt his breath catch. She looked beautiful. But it was more than that. There was something different about her, a lightness in her eyes, a relaxed set to her shoulders that he hadn't seen before.
"Hi, Jack," Olivia said, her smile warm and genuine.
"Hi," he replied, suddenly tongue-tied. "You look... wow."
Olivia's cheeks flushed as she reached the bottom of the stairs. "You, too," she teased, straightening his collar.
As they stepped out into the crisp December air, Jack offered Olivia his arm. She took it without hesitation, fitting against his side as if she belonged there. They walked in comfortable silence for a moment, the sounds of the approaching festival – cheerful music, laughter, the excited chatter of children – floating on the breeze.
Jack glanced at Olivia, noticing a hint of nervous energy beneath her calm exterior. "Everything okay?" he asked.
Olivia nodded, her smile a mix of excitement and something he couldn't quite place. "Everything's perfect," she said. "I ... I have something to tell you. But it can wait until after the festival."
Curiosity burned within Jack, but he respected her wishes. "Whenever you're ready," he said, giving her hand a reassuring squeeze.
They rounded the corner into the town square, and Jack delighted in Olivia's gasp of wonder. The entire area had been transformed into a winter wonderland. Twinkling lights adorned every tree and lamppost, while garlands and ribbons festooned the storefronts. In the center, a massive Christmas tree stood proud, its ornaments glinting in the afternoon sun.
"Oh, Jack," Olivia breathed. "It's magical."
Pride swelled in Jack's chest – pride in his town, and joy at being able to share this with her. "Wait until you see the rest," he grinned, leading her into the thick of the festivities.
They spent the next few hours exploring every inch of the festival. Jack introduced Olivia to what felt like half the town, his heart warming at how easily she chatted with everyone. They sipped hot cocoa while watching children take turns sitting on Santa's lap, tried their hand at decorating gingerbread houses and Olivia's artistic skills far outstripped Jack's clumsy attempts. They even took a short sleigh ride around the square.
As the sun began to set Jack led Olivia to a quiet corner near the harbor. They stood in comfortable silence for a moment, watching the lights of the festival reflect off the water.
"So," Jack said, turning to face her. "What was it you wanted to tell me?"
Olivia took a deep breath, her eyes meeting his with a mix of nervousness and determination. "I quit my job," she said.
Jack blinked, sure he had misheard. "You... what?"
"I quit my job," Olivia repeated, a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. "Today. I called my boss and resigned. Effective immediately."
Jack's mind whirled. "Olivia, that's... are you sure? I mean, your career, everything you've worked for..."
Olivia reached out, taking both of his hands in hers. "Jack, being here in Mistletoe Cove, spending time with you... it's made me realize that the life I thought I wanted isn't making me happy. I've been chasing success and promotions, but I've forgotten how to live."
Jack's heart raced, hope and caution warring within him. "But what about your life in Boston? Your friends, your apartment..."
"I can make new friends," Olivia said. "And as for my apartment... well, I'm hoping I might be able to find somewhere to stay here."
The implications of her words hung in the air between them. Jack searched her face, looking for any sign of doubt or hesitation. He found none.
"Olivia," he said carefully, "I need to know. Are you doing this because of me? Because if you are, I—"
She cut him off with a gentle finger to his lips. "You're part of it," she admitted. "A big part. But it's more than that. It's this town. This life. The peace I experience here. The sense of community. I want to see if I can make a life here, Jack. A real life, not only a career."
Jack's heart soared, but a niggle of doubt remained. "What will you do? I mean, for work?"
Olivia's eyes sparkled with excitement. "Well, I've always wanted to write. I thought maybe I could start a blog about small-town coastal life. And who knows? Maybe that could turn into a book someday. In the meantime, I have savings, and I will sell my apartment in Boston and... well, I was hoping you might know of any job openings in town?"
Jack chuckled, pulling her close. "I might know a thing or two about that. The Coastal Heritage Museum is looking for a new marketing director. Think you might be qualified?"
Olivia laughed, the sound like music to Jack's ears. "I think I could manage that."
They stood there for a moment, eyes locked, the future stretching out before them full of possibility. Jack reached up, gently cupping Olivia's cheek. "Are you sure about this?" he asked. "Really sure?"
In answer, Olivia rose on her tiptoes and pressed her lips to his. The kiss was soft at first, tentative, but quickly deepened as Jack wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her close. Olivia's fingers tangled in his hair as she melted against him, the warmth of her body chasing away the December chill.
When they finally broke apart, both breathless, Jack rested his forehead against Olivia's. "I'll take that as a yes," he murmured, earning a laugh from Olivia.
"So," Olivia said, her eyes twinkling with mischief, "know of any good real estate agents in town? I think I might be in the market for a more permanent place to stay."
Jack grinned, taking her hand as they began to walk back towards the festival. "As a matter of fact, I do. But you know, the Starfish Inn does offer extended stays. And I happen to know the owners are quite fond of you."
Olivia bumped her shoulder against his playfully. "Is that so? Well, I suppose I could be persuaded to stay there for a while."
As they rejoined the festivities, Jack couldn't wipe the smile off his face. He knew there would be challenges ahead. Helping Olivia adjust to small-town life, navigating their new relationship, and dealing with the inevitable gossip that came with being in a close-knit community. But looking at Olivia, her face glowing in the light of a thousand twinkling bulbs, Jack knew that together, they could weather any storm.
The Christmas festival swirled around them, full of joy and promise, much like the future that now lay ahead. And as Jack pulled Olivia close for another kiss, he silently thanked whatever twist of fate had brought this remarkable woman into his life, and into the heart of Mistletoe Cove.
