Epilogue
Mistletoe Cove October Harvest Festival
Olivia stood at the kitchen window, a steaming mug of cider warming her hands as she gazed out at the autumn landscape of Mistletoe Cove. Almost a year had passed since she'd made the life-changing decision to leave her high-powered career in Boston behind, and she hadn't regretted it for a single moment.
The sound of Jack's pickup truck rumbling up the driveway brought a smile to her face. She watched as he climbed out, his arms laden with groceries and what looked suspiciously like more Thanksgiving decorations.
Their house – a charming Cape Cod-style cottage overlooking the harbor – had been a joint labor of love. They'd spent the summer painting, repairing, and making it their own. Now, with a festive wreath on the door and pumpkins adorning the porch, it looked like something out of a fall postcard.
As Jack stamped the fallen leaves from his boots on the porch, Olivia reflected on the whirlwind year they'd had. There had been challenges, of course. Learning to slow down and embrace small-town life hadn't always been easy for her. But with Jack by her side, every obstacle had felt surmountable.
The door swung open, bringing a gust of crisp air and the man who had become the center of her world.
"Hey, beautiful," Jack called, his cheeks ruddy from the cool air. "Give me a hand with these, will you?"
Olivia set down her mug and hurried to help, stealing a quick kiss as she relieved him of a bag. "More decorations? Jack, we agreed to keep it simple!"
He grinned, unrepentant. "What can I say? I like making our home festive."
As they unpacked the groceries, falling into the easy rhythm they'd developed over the past months, Olivia marveled at how natural it all felt. The Olivia of a year ago would hardly recognize this version of herself. Relaxed, content, and hopelessly in love. Who knew that one could find true love later in life?
"How was your day?" Jack asked, storing the last of the groceries. "Make any progress on the blog?"
Olivia nodded enthusiastically. "I finished the post about the town's autumn traditions. And you'll never believe it – a publisher reached out about turning the blog into a book!"
Jack whooped, sweeping her into a bear hug. "That's amazing, Liv!"
His unwavering support had been a constant throughout the year. Whether it was cheering her on as she settled into her role as marketing director at the Coastal Heritage Museum or encouraging her writing, Jack had been her biggest champion.
Later that evening, as they strolled hand in hand towards the town square for the annual Harvest Festival, Olivia found herself reflecting on the journey that had brought her here.
"Penny for your thoughts?" Jack asked, squeezing her hand.
Olivia smiled up at him. "I was thinking about last Christmas. How scared I was to take the leap, to change everything."
Jack nodded, his eyes soft with understanding. "And now?"
"Now," Olivia said, "I can't imagine being anywhere else. Or with anyone else."
They reached the square, joining the crowd of familiar faces. Olivia waved to Elizabeth and Margaret, who beamed back at her. Tom Fisher gave them a knowing wink as he passed by, his arm around a woman Olivia recognized as the new librarian.
As the mayor began his speech, officially kicking off the holiday season, Jack wrapped his arms around Olivia from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder.
"You know," he murmured in her ear, "they say it's never too late for love, especially during the magic of the holiday seasons."
Olivia turned in his arms, raising an eyebrow. "Oh? And who says that?"
Jack grinned sheepishly. "Okay, I might have read it on your blog. But it's true, isn't it? Look at us."
Olivia's heart swelled with love for this man, for the life they'd built together. "It is true," she agreed. "And I'm grateful for it every day."
The crowd around them began to cheer as the mayor lit the massive bonfire, symbolizing the warmth and light of community as they headed into the colder months. Surrounded by the warmth of community and wrapped in the arms of the man she loved, Olivia felt a sense of belonging she'd never known before. This was home. This was where she was meant to be.
Jack's lips found hers in a tender kiss, and Olivia poured all her love and gratitude into it. When they parted, his blue eyes sparkled with joy and a hint of mischief.
"What do you say we head home?" he suggested. "I've got one more surprise for you."
As they walked back to their cozy cottage, the lights of Mistletoe Cove twinkling around them, Olivia sent up a silent thank you to whatever twist of fate had brought her here. She had found love later in life, yes, but it was all the sweeter for the waiting.
And as Jack led her up the path to their home, his hand warm in hers and promise shining in his eyes, Olivia knew that their greatest adventures were still to come.
Just then, Olivia's phone buzzed with a message from her colleague at the museum, Claire. "Heads up – we've got a visiting paleontologist coming for a winter dig next month. Dr. Frost. He's requested access to our archives. Might need your help with the PR angle. Talk tomorrow?"
Olivia smiled, intrigued by the prospect of a new project.
Little did she know that Dr. Frost's arrival would set in motion a series of events that would bring an unexpected romance to Mistletoe Cove during the magical Christmas season.
