Chapter 48
I walked down the central path, my boots crunching softly against the gravel border. Chloe and Sienna’s faces were pale with focused determination.
"Carlos..." Chloe began, voice small against the quiet of the valley as her hand brushed my arm. "Where are we going? The Bureau is over nine hundred miles away across three state lines. If we take your truck or try to run along the highway, they’ll flag us before we even hit the low pass."
I stopped in the middle of the lawn at the center of the garden.
"We aren't driving," I said, looking between the two of them. "And Sienna isn't running."
I reached into my pocket, pulling out a key fob. I flipped open the protective cover on the back, exposing a biometric thumb-scanner. I pressed my right thumb firmly against the glass sensor.
A low, deep groan vibrated straight through the soles of our boots.
Sienna gasped, hopping backward two feet in a flash of movement, while Chloe instinctively reached out, grabbing my waist as the entire fifty-foot circular lawn beneath our feet gave a heavy shudder.
Grass seams split perfectly along concealed steel joints, and flower beds retracted smoothly onto hidden side shelves.
With a loud hiss of seals disengaging, a massive fifty-foot platform began to descend smoothly straight down into the earth.
The morning sun faded above us, replaced by the flood of white LED lighting illuminating a vast hangar vault carved directly out of the bedrock.
Chloe’s jaw dropped. Sienna’s eyes went wide as saucers, hands flying to her mouth.
Sitting in the center of the bay was a vessel.
It was a sleek, eighty-foot stealth transport ship—a matte-black, radar-absorbent alloy fuselage designed with angular curves.
The forward canopy was constructed from thick, dark-tinted glass, while twin vector-thrust turbines were mounted into integrated wing housings toward the rear.
The ship looked formidable beneath the overhead LED arrays.
"Holy... crap..." Sienna breathed, stepping to the edge of the descending platform to stare down at the ship. "Carlos... is that... is that a stealth interceptor?!"
"It's a custom-built orbital stealth transport," I corrected gently, stepping down the steel ramp as the platform locked flush with the hangar floor.
"Double-hull titanium alloy, active optical cloaking, radar-absorbent ceramic skin, and twin cold-plasma vector thrusters.
It can hit Mach 4 at sixty thousand feet without making a single sound or leaving a thermal signature. "
Chloe walked slowly beside the sleek black wing of the ship, her gloved hand trailing over the cool matte finish. She turned her head, looking up at me.
"Carlos..." Chloe whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "You built this? Why didn't you ever tell us? Why did you keep a ship like this hidden?"
I stopped near the forward loading ramp, looking down at my calloused hands, then back into her eyes.
"Because I built it during my active Steeltitan days as the ultimate contingency plan," I admitted.
"Back when I was leading Bureau strike teams, I knew how corrupt the system was becoming.
I built this ship secretly over three years in this mountain vault, so if everything went to hell, I'd have a way out. "
I stepped closer to Chloe, placing my hands gently over her gold pauldrons, my thumb caressing the smooth metal. It wasn’t the same as touching her hand, but it’d have to do.
"I never showed it to you or Sienna because I wanted Heroes Landing to be a permanent, peaceful sanctuary. I never wanted either of you to look out at that garden, see a warship, and think about going back to the fight."
I looked past her, toward the loading ramp where Sienna was standing in her silver and turquoise suit, watching us quietly.
"But a sanctuary isn't a fortress if you let the people you love get dragged away," I added, my voice hardening. "I promised Evelyn she was safe under my roof. I promised all of you that as long as I was breathing, no one gets left behind."
Chloe stared at me. Her lower lip trembled slightly, tears of devotion welling. She didn't hesitate. She threw her arms around me, burying her face into my chest and pressing against me.
"Thank you, Carlos," Chloe whispered. She pulled back slightly. "You built this place to protect us from fighting. But now…” She wiped her tears. “We have something worth fighting for."
"Hell yeah we do!" Sienna cheered, zipping up the loading ramp in a silver blur. "Let's go kick the Bureau's front door down and bring Eve home!"
The rear boarding ramp lowered, revealing the high-tech interior cabin lined with four deep leather acceleration chairs and an integrated tactical command terminal.
Standing inside the cockpit, sitting tall in the pilot's swivel chair, was G.I.D.E.O.N. His claws were moving over the flight controls in a rapid, fluid sequence of diagnostic checks.
"Pre-flight initialization complete, Master Carlos," G.I.D.E.O.N. announced. "Plasma turbines engaged at idling frequency. Active optical cloaking array operating at one hundred percent capacity. Environmental dampeners locked."
Chloe, Sienna, and I took our seats in the main cabin. I strapped into the heavy center command chair directly behind the cockpit, while Chloe and Sienna settled into the side seats, pulling the magnetic safety harnesses over their shoulders.
"Initiating vertical ascent," G.I.D.E.O.N. reported.
The hydraulic platform lifted us back toward the surface.
As the garden turf doors opened into the morning light, the ship’s engines let out a low hum.
The optical cloaking array ignited instantly, bending the sunlight around the fuselage until the vessel turned entirely invisible to the naked eye and tracking radar alike.
With a smooth surge of momentum, the stealth transport lifted off the platform, soaring silently into the clear blue alpine sky.
Through the panoramic canopy, the view of the mountain valley unfolded below us. The timber lodge of Heroes Landing, the surrounding pine forests, and the lake shrank into a peaceful sanctuary surrounded by snow-capped peaks.
Within seconds, the ship tilted its nose upward, the cold-plasma turbines engaging at Mach 3, streaking silently through the upper atmosphere.
Less than thirty minutes later, the vessel descended through the low cloud layer over District 1, coming to a dead hover five hundred feet above the primary Hero Bureau Sector Facility.
The facility was a sprawling complex of gleaming white concrete, reinforced glass towers, and staging pavilions surrounded by high security fences.
Yet as the stealth transport lowered its landing gear and set down silently on the secondary staging apron near the main entrance gates, something was off.
There were no tactical sirens blaring. No heavy-armored interceptors scrambled to meet us. No automated defense turrets locked onto our position.
Not even a single other hero to fight us.
Instead, low-level administrative personnel, data clerks, and janitorial staff were casually walking along the manicured plaza pathways, carrying coffee cups and tablet computers. The primary perimeter gates stood wide open, guarded only by two security officers.
"What... what is this?" Chloe asked, as she unbuckled her magnetic harness and leaned toward the window. "Where is the vanguard? Why are the gates open?"
"It's a setup," I said. "They want us to storm the gates with our powers blazing. They want us to roll in like rogues, smash through the administrative staff on camera, and give Director Henderson the exact public relations footage he needs to brand us as public enemies on global news feeds."
"They're trying to bait us into going off the rails," Sienna muttered, her turquoise-gloved hand checking her wrist HUD, where her live stream feed was currently streaming to over five point five million concurrent viewers across the world.
"If we attack low-level staff on camera, the public turns against us. "
"Then we don't give them a fight," I said, rolling my shoulders. "We walk in calm and cool."
As the rear loading ramp lowered to the pavement, G.I.D.E.O.N. turned his pilot seat around to face the three of us in the cabin.
"Master Carlos, Miss Sterling, Miss Drake," G.I.D.E.O.N. announced. "Before you disembark into the facility, I must articulate an official operational request."
Sienna paused near the ramp, raising an eyebrow. "An operational request, Gid?"
"Indeed," the droid replied, bowing his titanium head.
"I request that you ensure the safe, uninjured recovery of Guest Evelyn Cross.
My internal domestic algorithms have determined that her presence, culinary contributions, and unique dark-matter perspective have become an irreplaceable, integral component of our household equilibrium. The lodge is incomplete without her."
Sienna let out a loud, affectionate laugh, stepping over to give G.I.D.E.O.N.’s heavy shoulder armor a pat.
"Gideon... you big softie!" Sienna crowed, holding her wrist HUD up to capture the moment. "You actually worry about her!"
On Sienna’s stream HUD, the chat exploded with comments and donations:
User_771 sent $100: 'THE ROBOT HAS A HEART! I'M CRYING!'
HeroLover_99 sent $250: 'brING EVELYN HOME TO GIDEON!'
Anon_404 sent $500: 'GIDEON IS THE BEST CHARACTER IN THIS ENTIRE SHOW!'
VesperaFan_01 sent $1000: 'SAVE VESPERA! WE STAND WITH HEROES LANDING!'
I smiled. "We'll bring her back safe, Gid. Keep the engines idling."
"Standing by for extraction sequence, sir," the droid replied, bowing politely.
I turned toward the open loading ramp. With millions of viewers watching live across the globe, we stepped out onto the open pavement of the Bureau staging plaza, ready to face whatever trap Director Henderson had laid for us.
