Chapter 49

There were no armed guards in formation, no blast shields over the high balconies, and no tactical alarms blaring.

I led the way across the central rotunda, my heavy boots echoing against the marble.

To my right, Chloe walked with grace in her gold and crimson armor.

To my left, Sienna glided in her dark turquoise and silver bodysuit.

Her camera rig hovered on its gimbal beside her shoulder, broadcasting the facility live to millions of viewers.

We bypassed main security without resistance. The two guards stationed at the checkpoint didn't reach for their sidearms; they simply stepped aside, wide-eyed, letting the three S-tier figures pass without a word.

"Chat's up to seven point eight million," Sienna murmured, gesturing briefly toward her wrist HUD. "The whole world is watching this hallway, Carlos. Every major news network in North America just picked up our stream feed."

"Keep the camera steady," I said. "Let Henderson explain himself to the world."

At the end of the grand corridor, the double doors of the Director’s Executive Suite disengaged and swung open automatically.

Inside, the suite was filled with mahogany, leather seating, and floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the District 1 cityscape.

Sitting behind a massive desk was Director Henderson.

He didn't wear battle armor or reach for a weapon. Clad in his service uniform loaded with gold medals, he leaned back in his leather chair, fingers intertwined. He looked up as we entered, his expression devoid of panic or surprise.

"Carlos," Henderson said smoothly. "Chloe. Sienna. Welcome back. I see you brought your... media apparatus."

I stopped ten feet in front of his desk, my heavy armor settling into a motionless stance. Chloe stepped up to my right, her hands resting near her waist, while Sienna positioned the floating camera rig to capture both Henderson's face and my broad, armored back in a single frame.

"Where is Evelyn Cross, Henderson?" I demanded.

Henderson leaned forward, resting his forearms, looking straight into the camera lens.

"Evelyn Cross is where she belongs, Vance," Henderson stated calmly.

"In federal custody. You come into my office with a live camera, attempting to frame this as an act of personal malice or Bureau overreach.

But let us be entirely transparent with the public watching this broadcast. Evelyn Cross is Vespera.

A threat who authorized the destruction of three municipal districts, killed dozens of law enforcement personnel, and commanded the Shadow Syndicate for over six years. "

Chloe took a step forward, her aura flaring in a golden pulse. "She was retired, Henderson! She surrendered her uniform, crossed Carlos's non-combat perimeter, and signed the Sanctuary Oath! She was living peacefully, hurting no one!"

"A 'Sanctuary Oath' holds zero legal standing under federal law, Asset Sterling," Henderson countered, his tone hardening.

"We could not allow a threat like Vespera to walk free under the assumption that a mountain cabin could tame a calamity.

It was our sworn duty to ensure her signature wasn't actively brainwashing or manipulating the heroes residing at your so-called sanctuary. "

"Brainwashing?!" Sienna interjected, gesturing toward the HUD screen. "She was baking muffins! She was making tea and watching movies on the couch! She didn't brainwash anyone!"

Henderson kept his steady gaze locked on mine. "We placed her in a high-security research facility to run medical and neurological diagnostics. We needed to understand the mechanics of her anomaly, to see if her dark-matter core was stable, or if it presented an imminent risk of atmospheric decay."

I took a heavy step toward his desk, the floorboards groaning as my gauntlets clenched into fists. "And what did you discover, Henderson?"

A faint smile touched the Director's lips. He leaned back in his leather chair, steepling his fingers.

"We discovered something extraordinary, Carlos," Henderson said, voice casual. "We discovered that her power... has an off switch."

The room went silent.

Chloe froze. Sienna’s kinetic static instantly cut out. On Sienna’s wrist HUD, the live stream chat, which had been overwhelmingly supportive of our mission, suddenly split into a chaotic, volatile war of opinions:

User_992 sent $100: 'AN OFF SWITCH?! YOU CAN DEPOWER SUPERS NOW?!'

LawAndOrder_1: 'Honestly... it makes sense.'

S-TierFanatic sent $500: 'THAT IS INHUMAN! YOU CANNOT STRIP SOMEONE'S BIOLOGY!'

CitizenX: 'She was a mass murderer! Depowering her is mercy compared to execution!'

HeroLeaks_Official sent $1000: 'THIS IS A DANGEROUS PRECEDENT! WHO DECIDES WHO GETS DEPOWERED?!'

Henderson gestured smoothly toward the camera, speaking directly to the millions watching at home.

"The Bureau believes that violent criminals should be permanently depowered and allowed to live out the remainder of their days as ordinary mortals.

It is no different than taking away a bank robber's firearm, or revoking a corrupt doctor's medical license. It is for safety and rehabilitation."

He looked back at me, cold and defiant. "If you, or your attorney, have a problem with this policy, Carlos... see us in court."

Inside my heavy titanium helmet, my vision narrowed into a pitch-black tunnel of fury.

The air inside my suit grew hot as blood pounded in my ears. I wanted nothing more than to step over that desk and crush Director Henderson’s jaw. I wanted to tear down his office, shatter his glass towers, and grind his facility into powder.

But I stayed motionless. I forced my body density to lock, refusing to give him the footage of a juggernaut going rogue on live television.

"Where. Is. She?" I growled.

Before Henderson could offer another smug deflection, the sleek smartphone resting beside his blotter let out a buzz.

Henderson glanced down at the screen. He picked up his phone, tapped the glass, and looked up at me with calm arrogance.

"Ah," Henderson said, checking his gold wristwatch. "She should be being brought back right about... now."

I didn't wait for another word.

I turned on my heel, my armor plates clattering as I sprinted out of the Executive Suite, leaving Henderson sitting alone behind his desk.

I tore down the central corridor.

"WHERE IS THE TELEPORTATION HUB?!" I yelled into the grand rotunda, my voice echoing off the pillars. "WHERE IS THE MEDICAL BAY?! Where is Vespera?"

Administrative clerks scattered, dropping papers and tablets as I thundered past. A frightened young security officer pointed down the eastern lower concourse toward the Sub-Level 2 Medical and Arrival Vaults.

"Sub-Level 2!" Chloe yelled, her golden suit streaking alongside me in a flash of light, while Sienna blurred past us down the stairs, filming every second of our sprint.

“Turn it off!” I yelled.

She quickly obliged.

I smashed through the double doors of Sub-Level 2, my gauntlets tearing the iron latches clean off the frame. At the far end of the hall, behind a wall of reinforced glass, stood the Primary Quantum Teleportation Hub.

Inside the arrival chamber, four generators were slowing their hum. In the center of the pad, bathed in a dying shimmer of purple static, stood Evelyn Cross.

She wore a pale green medical gown that hung loose over her shoulders. Her dark hair was tangled and damp, falling around a face drained of color. Her feet were bare against the cold steel plate.

As the final purple static spark fizzled and died, Evelyn's knees gave out.

She fell forward onto the cold floor as her strength abandoned her entirely.

"EVELYN!" I roared.

I shattered the observation glass wall with my shoulder, polycarbonate exploding into fragments as I dove onto the arrival pad.

I reached her in a single bound, dropping to my knees and sliding my heavy arms beneath her back and shoulders.

I scooped her frail, shivering body up against my chest, cradling her as if she were made of glass. I disengaged my suit's helmet faceplate, my armor retracting to expose my face, my eyes burning with unshed tears as I looked down into her pale, drawn features.

There was no dark-matter aura around her skin or wisps around her fingernails. The violet spark that had lived within her eyes was gone, snuffed out like a candle in the wind.

She was completely human.

Chloe dropped to her knees beside us, reaching out to touch Evelyn's bare ankle, but finding only cold, mortal flesh. Sienna landed silently beside the glass frame, her raspy breath catching in a choked sob as she saw her friend collapsed in my arms.

Evelyn shifted weakly against my chest. Her dark lashes fluttered open, her eyes slowly coming into focus as she looked up at me.

A faint and gentle smile touched her pale lips.

Slowly, taking every remaining bit of strength, Evelyn lifted a trembling hand from her lap and brushed her fingers against my jaw.

"Don't fight them..." Evelyn whispered, her voice barely a breath. Her eyes looked deeply into mine, filled with peace. "I didn't."

Her hand slipped weakly from my cheek, falling limp into her lap as she closed her eyes.
