Chapter 14 The Husband She Couldnt Leave
Chapter 14
The Husband She Couldn't Leave
The rain had finally started slowing down.
Soft drops fell from the mansion roof while silence stretched painfully between them.
Aadhira looked exhausted.
Arjun looked destroyed.
And somehow that frightened her more than anything else tonight.
Because for years she had imagined this moment differently.
She imagined Arjun fighting for her someday. Holding her close. Admitting he loved her.
But not like this.
Not after she had already fallen apart trying to survive his absence.
Savita finally broke the silence sharply. "This conversation has gone too far."
Nobody responded.
Her irritation grew instantly. "Arjun, investors are already questioning your judgment after tonight's scandal. Don't make emotional decisions now."
Arjun slowly turned toward his mother.
And for the first time in his life-
There was disappointment in his eyes while looking at her.
"Emotional decisions?" he repeated quietly.
Savita frowned slightly at his tone.
"You spent years encouraging another woman around my marriage," he continued coldly. "And now suddenly you care about judgment?"
Savita looked stunned.
"Arjun," she said carefully, "Naina was helping the company."
"No." His voice sharpened instantly. "You wanted her beside me because you never accepted my wife."
The truth landed heavily.
Naina looked away silently.
Because nobody could deny it anymore.
Savita's expression hardened again. "I wanted someone who matched your world."
Arjun laughed once quietly.
But this time it sounded bitter.
"And look where that thinking got me."
Aadhira's chest tightened unexpectedly at the pain hidden beneath his words.
Savita opened her mouth again, but Arjun stopped her before she could speak.
"You know what the difference between them is?" he asked coldly. "Naina understands my business."
Naina stiffened slightly.
"But Aadhira understood me."
Silence.
Even Aadhira froze.
Because despite everything-
That sentence felt devastatingly intimate.
Arjun looked toward his wife again, eyes softer now.
"She loved me before I became this person."
The confession hurt.
Because it was true.
Before the billion-dollar pressure.
Before the endless meetings.
Before ambition consumed him whole.
Aadhira loved the quieter version of Arjun nobody else ever noticed.
And somewhere along the way-
He lost that version of himself too.
Aadhira suddenly felt emotionally overwhelmed.
Too many confessions.
Too much vulnerability.
Too late.
"I need space," she whispered.
Arjun's expression changed immediately.
"No."
The immediate answer made her stare at him.
"Arjun-"
"You leave tonight and I'll lose my mind."
The honesty stunned everyone again.
This wasn't the cold, calculating billionaire anymore.
This was a man unraveling publicly over his wife.
Aadhira looked shaken by the desperation in his voice.
"Why are you making this harder?" she whispered painfully.
"Because I can't breathe thinking about you walking away from me."
The confession landed directly in her chest.
God.
Why did he suddenly say exactly the things she spent years needing to hear?
Aadhira pressed her lips together tightly, trying not to cry again.
But Arjun noticed anyway.
Of course he did.
Now he noticed everything.
He stepped toward her carefully this time.
Slowly.
Like approaching someone fragile.
"Aadhira," he said quietly, "look at me."
She didn't want to.
Because every time she did, her resolve weakened dangerously.
Still-
Her eyes lifted toward his.
Big mistake.
The intensity in his expression almost stole her breath instantly.
No arrogance.
No coldness.
Only raw emotion he no longer knew how to hide.
"I know I failed you," he admitted softly. "I know I made you feel alone."
A tear slipped down her cheek.
Arjun's fingers twitched slightly like he wanted to wipe it away but stopped himself.
"And I know saying sorry isn't enough."
No.
It wasn't.
But hearing him admit it still affected her deeply.
Arjun took another slow step closer.
"But don't ask me to stop loving you now that I finally understand what you are to me."
The vulnerability in his voice shattered something inside her.
Because she believed him.
Every word.
And maybe that was the real problem.
Aadhira laughed weakly through tears. "You're selfish."
A faint broken smile appeared on his face.
"I know."
"You want me now because you're scared."
"Yes."
The blunt honesty stunned her completely.
Arjun looked exhausted suddenly.
Emotionally exhausted.
"I'm terrified," he admitted quietly. "Happy?"
Her heart cracked painfully hearing that.
Because powerful men like Arjun Oberoi were never supposed to sound afraid.
Yet tonight-
He sounded terrified of her leaving.
Aadhira looked away quickly before she completely broke down.
"I hate this," she whispered.
"What?"
"That I still want to believe you."
The confession hit Arjun like lightning.
Hope.
Small. Fragile. Dangerous hope.
He stepped forward instinctively.
"Aadhira-"
But before he could reach her-
Savita suddenly spoke again.
Cold.
Sharp.
"And what happens when this obsession fades again?"
Silence crashed instantly.
Aadhira froze.
Because that-
That was the real fear.
Not whether Arjun loved her tonight.
But whether he would stop loving her loudly once he felt secure again.
Arjun's expression darkened immediately. "Mom."
But Savita continued anyway.
"You ignored her for years," she said bluntly. "Now suddenly you're emotional because another man appeared."
Aadhira's chest tightened painfully.
Because those words echoed her own fears exactly.
Arjun looked furious now.
But beneath the anger-
There was guilt.
Because even he couldn't fully deny it.
Aadhira noticed the hesitation in his eyes.
Tiny.
Brief.
But enough.
Something inside her quietly cracked again.
She stepped back slowly.
And this time-
Arjun finally looked panicked.
