Chapter Two
The wound had been a through and through but what stunned them were the scars on the girl’s back. They were old but some were new.
Pyrite didn’t say a word but instead, he tended to the exit wound on her back. The second bullet hole took a few stitches to close as well. Then he looked at the rest of her back but didn’t find any open wounds he needed to take care of.
Ironman remained silent the entire time. He simply sat and stared at Lilly.
Ulysses left the room for a few minutes then he returned with a t- shirt and clean pair of pajama pants. He looked at Pyrite.
Pyrite went back to Lily’s bed.
Ulysses changed her out of her outer clothes and redressed her in his.
Then he tucked her down under the covers and he brushed his lips over her forehead.
He didn’t know why he did that but he did it anyway.
Then he pulled a chair over to her bed and sat down.
He then looked over to ask, “Is Lily gonna be okay?”
Pyrite sighed hard. “God, I hope so. The bullet ripped through her body but I think I caught all the damage. Ironman would have been killed if he had walked through that door. That bullet would have gone right through his heart.”
“Did you get the shooter?” the young woman from the other bed asked without opening her eyes.
Pyrite snapped his head up and looked at her in the bed then rushed over and began taking her vitals again.
She pushed his hand away and rolled over onto her back as she slowly opened her eyes. The green of her eyes was fierce with a rage the two men didn’t understand. “Did you kill the old man? Tell me I need to know, is he dead?”
Pyrite nodded. “Yeah, Boomer pinned him with a red light and someone on the roof shot him. He looked surprised when he fell to his knees though. Like he couldn’t believe someone actually shot him.”
Ulysses nodded. “I took that shot and saw him fall. That's when the shooting really started.”
The woman turned her head and stared at him then she nodded. “Yes, I’ll bet ole Tomas was actually surprised. He thought he was invincible. Now his entire family is out there dead. And for what? For nothing but they all earned those bullets today. Each and every one of them deserved what they got.”
“Just who the hell are you, little girl?” Boomer sounded off from the doorway. “And why are you so happy that an entire family lays dead outside our fenceline?”
The woman turned her head slowly and stared at the lineup of bikers standing at the door. “My name is Aisha Bennetalia. I was a servant at the Sanchez hacienda. I worked for them. But so did my mother until she killed herself.”
“And just who is your father?” Bouncer asked her quietly.
Aisha scooched to the head of the bed and sat up while wincing as she looked at Bouncer. “Supposedly, it was Bruno Sanchez. But to them, I was nada...nothing but a servant. My mother was a woman named Carol Bennetalia and she was their maid.”
“How long were you there at their home?” Ulysses asked.
“About seven years. I had a place with my mother in a small shack out of town, but she just couldn’t face life as it was anymore.
So then I was shipped to Bruno.... Not that he really noticed.
I was eight when they had the housekeeper train me as a maid.
I guess they needed one after my mother and a few others left,” she told him quietly.
“I mean that was ok. I had food and a bed at least. I got hand-me-downs to wear for clothes. It was fine until...” she paused.
“They would all get drunk and...” She shook her head and didn’t elaborate.
Ulysses looked at her and quietly asked, “Are these drunks the Sanchez family?”
Nodding, she replied, “Bruno and his sons.”
“Are they the ones that did that to your back?” Ulysses asked while gritting his teeth.
She sighed hard and muttered, “It doesn’t matter.”
“Is that why you came here to see if he was dead?” Ulysses asked.
Aisha snorted. “That’s partly why but not all of it.”
“What’s the rest of it?” Titus wanted to know.
Aisha snapped her head up and glared at the men standing by the door.
“That I don’t have to answer and I’ll be damned if I will.
But the whole family deserved to die today.
” She scooted back down in the bed then grunted in pain as she painfully turned her back to the men and threw the blanket up over her head.
Ulysses saw what she did but a moment later he felt her whole body shake and he knew she was silently sobbing. He didn’t say anything.
Finally, the men at the doorway turned and left. Ironman went with them to see about the prisoners since Lily was out cold. He told Pyrite to send for him the second she woke up.
Ulysses reached out and touched the girl’s shoulder. “You’re safe here at least. Just rest and heal.” Then he pulled his chair closer while Pyrite cleaned up his medical areas.
After a moment, her hand sneaked out from under the blanket. She barely touched him as just their fingertips met but it was a moment for him at least. Then her hand disappeared under the covers again.
