Chapter 40
We grabbed Elaine's things and started loading them up into the truck.
Her mother watched as we moved her things out, a bottle of vodka in her hand.
She didn't say anything more to us, and it was probably for the best. Elaine looked broken, and it would take time for her to recover from this.
She had a far away look in her eyes the rest of the night, and she didn't speak a word to me until we both drove away from the house.
"So, let me get this straight. Rouges have been following me to breed me to produce wolves from my bloodline.
My mother had been poisoning me to make sure I never knew I was a werewolf, and she paid Nick to date me and keep an eye on me.
And, you thought I was a human this entire time.
What a fucked up night this has been." Elaine sighed.
"That about sums it up." I replied bleakly. "You okay?"
"No. Not at all." She looked out the window. "Where are we going?"
"Home." I said simply.
"What home?" She asked.
"Mine. I guess you'll be living with us from now on." I replied.
"With the pack?" Elaine asked.
"With our pack. Soon we will have our mating ceremony in front of the pack, and you'll become an official member."
"What is a mating ceremony?" She asked curiously.
"It is kind of like a wedding. We say vows to each other, and we seal the bond with a mating mark. However, since you already have one, we will skip that part." I smiled, remembering the day I marked her.
"How soon?" She asked with hesitation.
"As soon as possible. I've waited for far too long." I stated.
It felt like it had been an eternity that I had waited for her, and I didn't plan on waiting any longer. She was mine, and soon the whole world would find out. Everyone in the pack and all those pricks at school would see her right by my side. I dare any of them to try to take her away from me now.
"I have some questions... about my wolf." Elaine looked over to me, grief written on her face.
"What questions?" The last thing I wanted to talk about was her wolf. I know it was probably traumatizing to her, but it was also traumatizing to me. Seeing her wolf like that was absolutely haunting, and it was burned into my mind.
"Will I ever be able to shift again?" Elaine seemed anxious.
"No... probably not. Not even the best healer could fix... that." I said honestly."
"... oh."
An awkward silence fell over the both of us.
It was clear that she was done asking questions.
The answer I gave her was like a nail in the coffin.
Her wolf was beyond saving. She was malformed, unable to walk, and blind.
There was no recovering from that. Though it saddened me that her wolf was not going to be a part of our lives, I was glad that at least Elaine was alive and well.
