Chapter 39

The Proposal

A month later...

The apartment looked different.

A few more books lined the shelves.

A pair of men's running shoes rested near the entrance.

Kabir's drawings now covered one entire wall.

And every morning, the smell of coffee filled the kitchen before anyone else woke up.

Life hadn't become perfect.

It had become real.

The kind of ordinary happiness all three of them had once thought they would never have.

---

One Saturday morning, Anaya woke up to complete silence.

She frowned.

Silence usually meant Kabir was planning something.

She walked into the living room.

Empty.

The kitchen.

Empty.

"Kabir?"

No answer.

"Aarav?"

Still nothing.

Just as she started searching, the front door opened.

Kabir walked in holding Aarav's hand.

Both of them wore identical guilty expressions.

Anaya folded her arms.

"I'm almost afraid to ask."

Kabir smiled nervously.

"We went out."

"I can see that."

"Without waking you."

"I noticed."

Aarav scratched the back of his neck.

"In our defence..."

"There isn't one," Anaya interrupted.

Kabir giggled.

"Dad said you'd say that."

She looked at Aarav.

"You involved him?"

"I may have needed an accomplice."

The apology in his smile made it impossible to stay annoyed.

Almost.

---

After breakfast, Aarav told Kabir to wait in his room for a while.

The little boy looked confused.

"But why?"

"I need to talk to Mumma."

Kabir narrowed his eyes suspiciously.

"Important talk?"

"Very important."

He thought for a moment.

Then nodded.

"Okay."

Before leaving, he whispered,

"Don't fight."

Aarav smiled.

"We won't."

---

The apartment became quiet.

Anaya sat on the balcony with a cup of tea.

Aarav joined her.

He looked more nervous than she had ever seen him.

Even more nervous than the day he introduced Kabir to his family.

She smiled.

"You're making me worried."

He laughed softly.

"I'm worried too."

She waited.

He reached into his pocket.

Not for a ring.

Instead, he took out a folded piece of paper.

She frowned.

"What's that?"

"A promise."

He handed it to her.

Curious, she unfolded it.

At the top, written in neat handwriting, were the words:

Things I Promise You

She looked at him.

"You wrote this?"

He nodded.

"I wanted you to know exactly what I'm asking you to trust."

She looked back at the paper.

I promise to never let a misunderstanding replace a conversation.

I promise to never make you carry your fears alone.

I promise to respect your dreams, your work and your choices.

I promise to be the father Kabir deserves every single day.

I promise to choose our family, even on the difficult days.

By the time she reached the last line, her vision had blurred with tears.

The final promise read:

And I promise to spend the rest of my life proving that loving you will always be the easiest decision I make.

A tear slipped down her cheek.

"Aarav..."

He gently took the paper from her trembling hands.

Then, for the first time since they reunited, he slowly knelt down on one knee.

This time...

There was a ring.

Simple.

Elegant.

Exactly her style.

"I know I can't erase the past."

His voice was steady.

"I know we still have scars."

She nodded through her tears.

"I also know we've already found our way back to each other."

He smiled softly.

"So..."

He opened the ring box.

"Anaya Mehra..."

He paused.

"...will you marry me?"

The world seemed to stop.

Not because of the proposal.

Because of everything it represented.

Forgiveness.

Trust.

A second chance.

A future.

She laughed through her tears.

"You really made a list before proposing."

"I wanted to be prepared."

"You've become impossible."

"I've been told."

She wiped her tears.

Then looked into his eyes.

The same eyes she had fallen in love with years ago.

Only now...

They carried more kindness.

More patience.

More understanding.

She smiled.

"Yes."

Aarav let out a breath he hadn't realized he was holding.

"Yes?"

She nodded.

"Yes."

He carefully slipped the ring onto her finger.

Then stood up.

Instead of kissing her immediately, he gently rested his forehead against hers.

"Thank you."

She smiled.

"For what?"

"For giving us another chance."

---

At that exact moment, a loud cheer came from inside the apartment.

"I KNEW IT!"

Both of them turned.

Kabir stood in the hallway.

His hands covered his mouth.

He looked completely delighted.

"You were spying?"

Kabir looked offended.

"I was supervising."

Aarav laughed.

"Were you?"

"I had to make sure Dad asked properly."

Anaya shook her head.

"You planned this, didn't you?"

Kabir proudly nodded.

"I helped him choose the ring too."

Aarav sighed dramatically.

"So much for keeping it a surprise."

Kabir ran over and hugged both of them.

"So..."

He looked at the ring.

"Does this mean you're getting married?"

Anaya smiled.

"Yes."

Kabir jumped up and down excitedly.

"I get to be at the wedding!"

Aarav grinned.

"You'll have the most important job."

Kabir gasped.

"Really?"

"You'll be the one who gives Mumma to me."

Kabir hugged them both tightly.

"This is the best day ever."

As the three of them stood there, laughing together in their small apartment, one thing became clear.

Their family hadn't been rebuilt through grand gestures.

It had been rebuilt through honesty.

Patience.

Forgiveness.

And countless ordinary days filled with love.

Only one chapter remained before their story came full circle.
