7. Andrea

As we make our way back into the party, I can’t shake the feeling of gratitude towards Josh for stepping in earlier. I feel compelled to bring up the incident again, needing to understand his motivations behind the impromptu charade.

“Josh, about earlier...” I start, my voice hesitant as I search for the right words.

He turns to me, his eyes meeting mine with a mixture of curiosity and concern. “Yeah?” he prompts, his tone gentle.

“I just wanted to say thank you for coming to my aid back there. I don’t know what I would have done without you,” I say, my voice soft and sincere.

Josh smiles warmly, his gaze softening as he reaches out to squeeze my hand reassuringly. “Hey, no need to thank me. I couldn’t just stand by and watch you be put on the spot like that,” he replies, his voice filled with genuine concern.

I nod, grateful for his understanding. “I know, but still...it meant a lot to me,” I murmur.

Josh’s smile widens, a hint of mischief twinkling in his eyes. “Well, I’m glad I could be of service. Besides, it was kind of fun seeing Jeremy looking so shocked,” he admits, a playful grin spreading across his face.

I can’t help but laugh at his honesty, feeling a weight lift off my shoulders as I realize that I’m not alone in this. “Yeah, it was pretty satisfying, wasn’t it?” I reply, a smile tugging at the corners of my lips.

But then, as if sensing the weight of our conversation, Josh’s expression grows more serious, his gaze locking with mine in a silent plea for understanding.

“Andrea, I need to be honest with you,” he begins, his voice soft and earnest. “I wasn’t really thinking when I pretended to be your boyfriend back there. I just...acted on impulse.”

I furrow my brow, confusion flickering across my features as I try to make sense of his words. “What do you mean?” I ask, my voice tinged with uncertainty.

Josh sighs, running a hand through his hair in frustration. “I mean, I didn’t stop to consider the consequences of my actions. I just saw you in distress, and I wanted to help,” he admits, his voice filled with remorse.

I nod slowly, absorbing his words as I struggle to process the whirlwind of emotions swirling inside me. “I understand,” I reply, my voice tinged with understanding. “And I appreciate what you did for me, I really do. But...I think we need to be careful about how we proceed from here.”

Josh’s brow furrows in confusion, his gaze searching mine for answers. “What do you mean?” he asks, his voice laced with uncertainty.

I take a deep breath, steeling myself for the difficult conversation ahead. “I mean, we can’t keep pretending to be something we’re not. It’s not fair to either of us,” I reply, my voice steady despite the turmoil raging inside me.

Josh’s expression softens, his eyes filled with understanding. “You’re right,” he murmurs, as he looks away from me. “I’m sorry for putting you in that position, Andrea. I should have thought things through more carefully.”

I reach out and gently squeeze his hand, a silent gesture of forgiveness and understanding. “It’s okay, Josh,” I reply, my voice filled with sincerity.

As we stand there, lost in our own thoughts, the sound of Jeremy’s voice breaks through the haze of conversation, pulling us back to reality with a jolt.

As he speaks loud enough for most to hear, I feel Josh’s hand tighten around mine as Jeremy continues, “Andrea, I am so glad you and your boyfriend, Josh, could make it tonight.”

My heart skips a beat, my mind reeling from the sudden turn of events. I glance over at Josh, but he shakes his head subtly, a silent plea for caution.

I force a smile, nodding in a silent acknowledgement as Jeremy walks away heading toward his future wife. Inside, my mind is struggling to make sense of the chaos swirling inside.

As the music starts up again, I turn to Josh, a thousand questions swirling inside my head. “What just happened?” I whisper, my voice barely above a whisper.

Josh sighs, running his fingers through his hair in frustration. “I have no idea,” he admits, his voice tinged with uncertainty. “But we need to be careful. We can’t let anyone know the truth about us.”

I nod slowly, understanding the gravity of the situation. “Okay,” I reply, my voice filled with determination. “We’ll just have to play along for now and hope for the best.”

As the party winds down and the guests begin to filter out, I find myself lost in a whirlwind of emotions. And as I stand there, surrounded by the fading echoes of laughter and music, I can’t shake the feeling of unease that lingers in the air.

But just as I begin to gather my thoughts and prepare to leave, Tanya’s voice breaks through the haze of conversation, pulling me back to reality with a jolt.

“Andrea, Josh…can I talk to you guys for a moment?” Her eyes shining with curiosity as she approaches us with a playful grin.

I exchange a glance with Josh, a sense of apprehension gnawing at the pit of my stomach. I can’t help but wonder what Tanya could possibly want to talk to us about, especially after the events of the evening.

“Sure, Tanya. What’s on your mind?” I ask, forcing a smile despite the turmoil raging inside me.

Tanya’s grin widens, her eyes flickering between Josh and me with thinly veiled curiosity. “I couldn’t help but overhear what Jeremy’s said to you just a bit ago. And I couldn’t help but notice the way he referred to you guys as ‘Andrea and her boyfriend, Josh,’” she says, her voice laced with intrigue.

I feel my cheeks flush with embarrassment, my mind racing as I search for a plausible explanation. But before I can respond, Josh steps in, his voice calm and composed despite the tension crackling in the air.

“Yeah, it was kind of a surprise to us too. But we’ll explain everything on the way home,” he says, his tone firm and decisive.

Tanya’s eyes widen in surprise, her curiosity piqued by Josh’s cryptic response. “Okay, I guess I’ll just have to wait then,” she replies, a hint of disappointment creeping into her voice.

As we make our way towards the exit, I feel a tap on my shoulder, and I turn to see Sarah, standing there with a bright smile on her face.

“Andrea, there you are! I just wanted to say ‘hi’ to Josh in person,” Sarah says, her excitement evident in her voice as she gestures towards him.

Josh offers Sarah a warm smile and extends his hand. “It’s nice to officially meet you, Sarah. Andrea has told me so much about you,” he says, his tone friendly and genuine.

Sarah shakes Josh’s hand with enthusiasm, her eyes sparkling with delight. “Likewise, Josh. I’m so happy for you both,” she replies, her voice filled with sincerity.

I can’t help but feel a surge of warmth at Sarah’s words, grateful for her genuine happiness for us. “Thank you, Sarah. It means a lot to us,” I say, smiling gratefully at my friend.

Sarah returns my smile with a nod, her gaze flickering between Josh and me with a knowing look. “Well, I won’t keep you two any longer. We’ll have to catch up more soon,” she says, her voice filled with excitement.

I nod eagerly, already looking forward to the opportunity to reconnect with Sarah. “Definitely! We’ll have to make plans,” I reply, my voice tinged with anticipation.

Sarah bids us farewell and disappears back into the crowd.

The last set of the guests file out of the room, I feel a sense of relief wash over me, grateful to finally be leaving the chaos of the party behind. But as we make our way out into the cool night air, the weight of Tanya’s question hangs heavy in the air, casting a shadow over our otherwise quiet journey home.

The silence between us is very uncomfortable, thick with unspoken words and unanswered questions. I steal a glance at Josh, but he keeps his gaze fixed on the road ahead, his expression unreadable in the dim light of the streetlamps.

I open my mouth to speak, but the words catch in my throat, choked off by the weight of uncertainty. I can’t help but wonder what Tanya must be thinking, her mind undoubtedly racing with a thousand different possibilities.

But before I can voice my thoughts, Tanya breaks the silence with a question that cuts through the darkness like a knife.

“So, care to explain what’s going on?” she asks, her voice filled with curiosity.

I take a deep breath, steeling myself for the difficult conversation ahead. “It’s...complicated,” I reply, my voice barely above a whisper.

Tanya raises an eyebrow, her gaze fixed on me with a mixture of concern and confusion. “Complicated…how?” she presses, her tone insistent.

“It’s just...something…can we talk about later?” I ask, my voice trembling with uncertainty. “I promise we’ll explain everything.”

Tanya nods slowly, her expression thoughtful as she processes my words. “Okay, I guess I can wait,” she replies, her voice tinged with resignation.

As we continue our journey home, the weight of Tanya’s question hangs heavy in the air. I can’t help but wonder what the future holds as we pull up outside my apartment building, I don’t know how we’ll navigate the uncertain waters that lie ahead.

Tanya is still waiting for an explanation as she walks me to the door., I look toward her, and her eyes pleading for answers that I’m not ready to give.

“I’ll explain everything, Tanya. Just not right now. Josh might be able to give you a better explanation,” I say, my voice filled with a sense of urgency as I try to deflect her questions.

Tanya nods reluctantly, her expression clouded with confusion and concern. “Okay, Andrea. Just let me know when you’re ready to talk,” she replies, her voice tinged with disappointment.

I force a smile, trying to reassure her that everything will be okay. “I will, Tanya. Thanks for understanding,” I say, offering her a grateful nod before turning away and heading inside.

As I step into the comfort of my apartment, I let out a long sigh. Alone in the silence of my bathroom, I find myself reflecting on the night’s events, replaying each moment in my mind with a sense of disbelief and confusion.

What had started out as a simple engagement party, quickly turned into a whirlwind of emotions and unexpected twists and turns. From Jeremy’s tactless question to Josh’s impromptu intervention, the evening had been filled with more drama than I had ever anticipated.

And now, as I stand here washing off the remnants of the evening, I find myself grappling with a flood of conflicting emotions. Part of me is grateful for Josh’s support and protection, while another part of me is frustrated by his impulsive actions and the complications they’ve caused.

But amidst the chaos and confusion, one thing remains clear, I can’t ignore the nagging sense of unease that lingers in the back of my mind. Something about Jeremy’s unexpected reference to Josh as my boyfriend doesn’t sit right with me. I can’t shake the feeling that there’s more to the story than meets the eye.

I finally crawl into bed, exhausted both physically and emotionally. I find myself reaching for my phone, desperate for a distraction from the turmoil swirling inside. But as I scroll through my messages, my heart sinks at the sight of a new text from the same number that had sent the invitation earlier.

Curiosity mingled with dread, I open the message and read the words that appear on the screen.

Jeremy and Melissa have requested that you and your boyfriend, Josh, be one of the bridesmaids and groomsmen.

The message hits me like a ton of bricks, the weight of its implications settling over me like a heavy shroud. My mind races with a million questions. I send a text to Tanya, hoping we can talk about what this means in the morning.

Frustration and fear claw at my insides as I toss and turn in bed, unable to shake the feeling of impending doom that hangs over me like a dark cloud. With no answers and no one to turn to, I resign myself to the uncertainty of the night, knowing that whatever tomorrow brings, I’ll have to face it head-on.

I awake the next morning to the sound of my phone ringing. I see that it’s Josh calling. With trembling hands, I answer the call, only to be met with the sound of static and silence on the other end. Panic rising in my chest, I try calling him back, but each attempt goes straight to voicemail.
