8. Josh
As I pull up outside Tanya’s apartment building, I can still feel the adrenaline coursing through my veins from the events of the evening. Tanya shoots me a curious glance as she unbuckles her seatbelt, her eyes filled with questions I know she’s dying to ask.
“So, spill the beans, Josh. What exactly went down at the party?” Tanya asks, her tone laced with excitement.
I chuckle, unable to contain the grin that spreads across my face. “Well, let’s just say Jeremy was being his usual jerk-self. I couldn’t stand by and watch him try to embarrass Andrea, so I may have implied I was her boyfriend,” I reply, my voice tinged with satisfaction.
Tanya’s eyes widen in surprise, her curiosity piqued by my cryptic response. “Wait, so you pretended to be Andrea’s boyfriend?” she asks, her tone filled with disbelief.
I nod, unable to suppress a laugh as I recall the look of utter bewilderment on Jeremy’s face. “Yeah, I figured it shut him up. And let me tell you, the look on his face was priceless,” I admit, a smile spreading across my face.
Tanya bursts into laughter, her eyes sparkling with amusement. “Oh my god, I wish I could have seen that! You’re a legend, Josh,” she exclaims, her voice filled with admiration.
I shrug modestly, basking in the warmth of Tanya’s praise. “Eh, just doing what any decent guy would do,” I reply, trying to downplay my actions.
Tanya shoots me a knowing look, her eyes twinkling with mischief. “Well, I am very impressed. And I have to say, I think you make a pretty convincing boyfriend,” she teases, a playful grin spreading across her face.
I can’t help but laugh at her comment, feeling a sense of pride swell in my chest at the unexpected compliment. “Thanks, Tanya. I’ll be sure to add ‘professional boyfriend’ to my resume,” I joke, flashing her a playful grin.
But then, as the laughter dies down, Tanya’s expression grows more serious, her gaze locking mine in a silent plea for understanding.
“So, why is Andrea acting all weird about it?” Tanya asks, her voice tinged with concern.
I sigh, running a hand over my hair in frustration. “I think it’s because all of this isn’t real. I mean, we’re just pretending to be something we’re not, and the drama that comes with it seems to bother her,” I explain, my voice tinged with regret.
Tanya nods slowly, her expression thoughtful as she processes my words. “I see. Well, just know that I’m fully in support of whatever you guys decide to do. And if you ever need someone to talk to, I’m always here,” she says, her voice filled with sincerity.
I smile gratefully at Tanya, touched by her unwavering support. “Thanks, Sis. That means a lot,” I reply, feeling a sense of relief wash over me at her words.
As Tanya gathers her things and prepares to head inside, I can’t help but feel a sense of gratitude. Despite the chaos and uncertainty swirling around us, it’s comforting to know that we have someone like my sister in our corner, rooting for us every step of the way.
As I watch Tanya disappear into the building, I can’t shake the feeling of unease that lingers in the air. The events of the evening have left me struggling to make sense of my emotions.
But as I head home, I can’t help but feel a sense of determination settle over me. Whatever challenges may lie ahead, I know that Andrea and I can navigate them together.
I wake up the next morning feeling a mixture of exhaustion and anticipation. The events of the party still on my mind. I glance at the clock and realize it’s already past nine. Tanya is supposed to meet me for breakfast at the restaurant in half an hour. I quickly get ready and head out.
As I arrive at the restaurant, Tanya is already there, sipping on a cup of coffee and scrolling through her phone. She looks up as I approach, a mischievous glint in her eyes.
“Good morning, Josh! Sleep well?” She greets me with a smirk.
I chuckle, sliding into the seat across from her. “As well as can be expected, considering last night’s charade,” I reply, watching her grab a menu and start scanning the options.
Tanya sets menu down, her gaze fixed on me with a serious expression. “So, about last night,” she begins, her tone somber.
I give her my full attention. “Yeah, what’s on your mind?” I ask, bracing myself for whatever comes next.
Tanya leans in closer, her voice dropping to a whisper. “Josh, you have to be ready to pretend to be Andrea’s boyfriend for the wedding,” she says, her eyes boring into mine.
I blink in surprise, caught off guard by her sudden seriousness. “Wait, what?” I sputter, trying to wrap my head around her request.
Tanya nods emphatically, her expression dead serious. “Yes, Josh. Think about it. If Jeremy is already referring to you as Andrea’s boyfriend, then it’s only a matter of time before he asks Andrea to bring you along to the wedding,” she explains, her voice urgent.
I furrow my brow, feeling a sense of unease settle over me at the thought of pretending to be Andrea’s boyfriend for an entire wedding. “But won’t that just make things even more complicated?” I protest, feeling a knot form in my stomach.
Tanya shakes her head adamantly, her eyes blazing with determination. “No, Josh. Trust me, this is the best course of action,” she insists, her voice unwavering.
I sigh, knowing that Tanya has a point. As much as I hate the idea of continuing Andrea’s anxiety through the wedding, I can’t deny that it might be our best chance at avoiding further drama.
“Alright, Tanya. I’ll talk to Andrea about it,” I concede, resigning myself to the inevitable.
Tanya’s face lights up with a triumphant smile, her eyes sparkling with excitement. “Great! Just remember, you can’t mess this up, Josh.” she says, her voice filled with urgency.
I nod solemnly, feeling the weight of her words settle over me like a heavy cloak. “I won’t let you down, Tanya. I promise,” I reply, determined to uphold my end of the bargain.
We finish our breakfast and part ways. I can’t help but feel a sense of apprehension gnawing at the pit of my stomach. I don’t know how Andrea will react to us continuing this act.
But amidst the uncertainty and doubt, a new and unexpected opportunity presents itself, threatening to derail my carefully laid plans.
As I am walking down the sidewalk, I hear a familiar voice from behind me. I turn around to see Tanya rushing to catch up.
“Josh! I’ve been trying to get a hold of Andrea, but she’s not answering her phone. Have you tried to reach her this morning?” she asks, her voice tinged with concern.
I shake my head, feeling a pang of guilt at the mention of Andrea’s name. “No, sorry, Tanya. I haven’t talked to her since last night,” I reply, my voice tinged with regret.
Tanya’s brow furrows in confusion, her gaze flickering between me and the bustling street around us.
“That’s strange. She said she wanted to talk to me about something important,” she murmurs, her voice filled with concern.
“Well, I’m sure she’ll turn up soon. She’s probably just caught up with something,” I offer, trying to reassure her.
I pull out my phone, suggesting that I try to call Andrea’s phone. But as I bring the phone to my ear, all I hear is the sound of static and silence on the other end. Frustration wells up inside as I try calling her back, but each attempt goes straight to voicemail.
Tanya watches me with a concerned expression, her eyes filled with worry. “Is everything okay, Josh?” she asks, her voice tinged with concern.
I sigh, raking my fingers through my hair. “I’m not sure. I tried to call Andrea, but it sounded like there was something wrong with the connection,” I explain, my voice tinged with worry.
Tanya’s expression softens, her eyes filled with sympathy. “I hope everything’s alright. Andrea’s text seemed urgent,” she murmurs, her voice filled with concern.
I nod, feeling a sense of unease settle over me at Tanya’s words. “Yeah, me too. I’ll try calling her again to see if I can get through,” I reply, my voice tinged with uncertainty.
As Tanya bids me farewell and disappears back into the crowd, I can’t shake the feeling of dread that lingers in the air. Something tells me that whatever Andrea wanted to talk to Tanya about, it’s not going to be good.

Later in the day, as I’m pacing around my apartment, my phone rings, and I see Tanya’s name flashing on the screen. I answer quickly, hoping for some news about Andrea.
“Hey, Tanya. Any word from Andrea?” I ask, my voice tinged with worry.
Tanya’s voice comes through the line, filled with frustration. “No, Josh. I’ve tried calling her multiple times, but she’s not picking up. I’m starting to get really worried,” she replies, her tone urgent.
I sigh, feeling a sense of helplessness wash over me. “Me too. I think we should go to her apartment and check on her,” I suggest, knowing that we can’t just sit around and wait for Andrea to call.
Tanya agrees, and I quickly grab my keys, ready to head out the door. Within minutes, I’m pulling up outside Andrea’s apartment building, my heart racing with anticipation. Tanya is walking up as I step out of my car.
As we make our way up to Andrea’s apartment, I can’t shake the feeling of dread that lingers in the air. The door is slightly ajar when we arrive, sending a shiver down my spine.
I exchange a worried glance with Tanya before pushing the door open and stepping inside. “Andrea?” I call out, my voice filled with concern.
Andrea’s voice comes from the kitchen, tinged with excitement. “Hey, guys! I’m in here,” she calls out, her tone cheerful.
Relief floods through me at the sound of her voice, and I follow the sound into the kitchen. Andrea is seated at the counter, a bright smile on her face as she looks up at us.
“I was hoping you guys would come! I was just about to call you,” she exclaims, her eyes shining with excitement.
Tanya and I exchange a bemused glance before Tanya speaks up. “Well, we were getting worried. You haven’t been answering your phone,” she says, her voice tinged with concern.
Andrea waves off our concerns with a dismissive gesture. “I haven’t heard my phone ring all day…I was just getting things ready for our weekly movie night,” she explains, her smile widening.
I can’t help but laugh at her enthusiasm, relieved to see that she’s okay. “Movie night, huh? I’m not sure how we both forgot,” I reply, a grin spreading across my face.
Andrea nods eagerly, jumping up from her seat. “We do this every week! Come on, I’ve got the popcorn ready and everything,” she says, her excitement contagious.
Tanya and I follow Andrea into the living room, sinking into the comfortable couch as she sets up the movie. As the opening credits roll, Andrea leans back against the cushions with a contented sigh.
“I don’t want to focus on the past few days right now. Let’s just relax and enjoy the movie,” she says, her voice filled with determination.
Tanya nods in agreement, reaching for a handful of popcorn as she settles in beside me. “Sounds like a plan,” she replies, a smile tugging at the corners of her lips.
I glance over at Andrea, feeling a sense of gratitude wash over me. Despite the chaos and uncertainty of the past few days, I’m grateful to have Andrea and Tanya by my side.
As the movie continues, we fill the room with laughter, and I can’t help but feel a sense of peace settle over me.

A week later, I find myself at work, lost in a sea of paperwork and endless phone calls. But amidst the chaos of the restaurant, my mind keeps drifting back to Andrea and the events of the past week.
I glance down at my phone, my heart sinking at the sight of missed calls and text messages from Andrea. With a sense of unease gnawing at the pit of my stomach, I quickly check my messages, my fingers trembling as I read Andrea’s last message sent only a couple minutes ago.
Hey Josh, can you meet me outside the restaurant? We need to talk.
I feel a surge of panic wash over me as I realize that something must be wrong. Without a second thought, I grab my jacket and rush out of the restaurant, my heart pounding in my chest as I make my way outside.
As I step outside, I find Andrea pacing back and forth on the sidewalk, her expression fraught with worry and anxiety. “Andrea, what’s wrong?” I ask, my voice filled with concern as I rush to her side.
Andrea stops pacing and turns to face me, her eyes shining with unshed tears. “It’s Jeremy and his fiancée,” she murmurs, her voice barely above a whisper.
I furrow my brow in confusion, struggling to make sense of her words. “What about them?” I ask, my voice tinged with uncertainty.
Andrea takes a deep breath, her hands trembling at her sides as she struggles to find the right words. “Last week they asked me to be one of the bridesmaids at their wedding. And they said that my...boyfriend should attend and be one of the groomsmen,” she explains, her voice filled with fear and uncertainty.
I feel a surge of anger bubbling up inside me as I realize what Andrea is saying. “They can’t be serious,” I mutter, my voice laced with frustration. Tanya had been right, thinking this scenario would be a possibility.
Andrea nods in agreement, her eyes shining with tears as she meets my gaze. “I know. But... what am I supposed to do? The wedding rehearsals are scheduled start in a few days, and—” Her voice trembling with emotion.
I reach out and gently squeeze her hand, a silent gesture of comfort and reassurance. “Andrea, it’s okay, we can go together,” I reply, my voice filled with determination.
Andrea offers me a weak smile, her eyes filled with gratitude. “Thank you, Josh. I don’t know what I would do without you,” she murmurs, her voice barely above a whisper.
I return her smile. “Anytime, Andrea. Anytime,” I reply, my voice filled with sincerity.
As we stand there on the sidewalk, lost in our own thoughts, I can’t help but feel a sense of protectiveness wash over me. No matter what lies ahead, I’ll do whatever it takes to protect Andrea. And as we make our way back to her apartment, I know that we’ll face whatever challenges come our way, together.
