9. Andrea

As my trembling voice fills the air, I feel a surge of anger wash over me. How dare Jeremy and his fiancée put me in such a difficult position? But as I look into Josh’s eyes, I know that now is not the time for anger. I need his support, now more than ever.

“Andrea, it’s okay, we can go together,” Josh reassures me, squeezing my hand gently as a silent gesture of solidarity.

I offer him a weak smile, my eyes shimmering with gratitude. “Thank you, Josh. I don’t know what I would do without you,” I murmur, my voice barely above a whisper.

Josh returns my smile, and I can see the determination in his eyes. “Anytime, Andrea. Anytime,” he replies, his voice filled with sincerity.

Josh decides to take the rest of the afternoon off so we can talk about what we are going to do. As we make our way back to my apartment, I can’t shake the feeling of anxiety that bubbles up inside. The prospect of pretending to be Josh’s girlfriend for an entire wedding rehearsal and then the ceremony fills me with unease, but I know that Josh won’t let me face this alone.

A few days later, as the time for the wedding rehearsal draws near, Josh and I find ourselves standing outside the venue, my nerves frayed and my heart pounding in our chest.

“I can’t believe we’re actually doing this,” I mutter, my voice tinged with disbelief.

Josh offers me a reassuring smile. “Hey, it’s just the rehearsal. We’ll get through it together,” he replies, his voice filled with confidence.

As we step inside the venue, I can’t help but feel a sense of apprehension wash over me at the sight of the rows of empty chairs and the altar at the front of the room.

The sight of Jeremy and his fiancée waiting for us at the entrance only adds to my unease, but I plaster on a polite smile and try to ignore the sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach.

“Hey, Andrea, Josh! So good to see you two again,” Jeremy greets us with a smirk, his eyes flickering with amusement.

I force myself to return his greeting, my voice laced with forced politeness. “Hi, Jeremy. Thanks for having us,” I reply, trying to keep my tone light despite the knot of anxiety that coils in my stomach.

Melissa, steps forward, her smile bright and welcoming. “We are so glad you could make it. Jeremy has told me so much about you, Andrea,” she says with a smile that doesn’t reach her eyes.

I exchange a wary glance with Josh, knowing full well that Jeremy’s version of events is likely far from the truth. But before I can say anything, Melissa asks a question that catches me off guard.

“So, how did you two lovebirds meet?” she asks, her tone holds genuine interest.

I swallow hard, trying to compose myself as I search for the right words. “Uh, he is my best friend’s bother,” I reply, my voice tinged with uncertainty.

Josh nods in agreement, his expression carefully neutral. “Yeah, Andrea and I grew up together,” he adds, his voice echoing my own uncertainty.

Jeremy’s eyes narrow in suspicion, his gaze boring into ours as if trying to uncover some hidden truth. “And when did you two decide that you were in love?” he presses, his tone bordering on intrusive.

I exchange a nervous glance with Josh, knowing full well that Jeremy’s questions are nothing more than thinly veiled attempts to pry into our personal lives. But despite my discomfort, I force myself to answer as honestly as possible.

“Well, it’s hard to say exactly. I think we both knew that there was something special building between us over time,” I reply, trying to keep my tone light despite the weight of Jeremy’s scrutiny.

Josh nods in agreement, his expression carefully neutral. “Yeah, it wasn’t like some big Hollywood moment or anything. It just kind of…happened,” he adds, wrapping his arm around my waist.

Jeremy’s smirk widens into a grin, his eyes gleaming with amusement. “Well, isn’t that just adorable,” he says, his tone dripping with sarcasm.

I bite back a retort, knowing that engaging with him will only escalate the situation further. Instead, I shoot him a forced smile and turn my attention to Melissa, hoping to steer the conversation in a more pleasant direction.

“So, Melissa, what are the plans for today’s rehearsal?” I ask, my voice tinged with forced cheerfulness.

Melissa’s face lights up at the mention of her wedding plans, and she launches into a detailed description of the next couple days. As she speaks, I can’t help but feel a sense of relief wash over me, grateful for the distraction from Jeremy’s relentless questioning.

But as the conversation continues, I can’t help but notice that Jeremy’s eyes are still trained on me and Josh. His gaze is filled with suspicion and mistrust. As we make our way into the main hall for the rehearsal, I can’t help but feel a sense of foreboding settle over me, knowing that this is only the beginning of what promises to be a long and difficult weekend.

Josh and I take our places at the front of the room, trying to ignore the curious glances of the other wedding party members as they file in.

As the rehearsal progresses, it’s time for Jeremy and his fiancée to practice their vows. My heart sinks as I realize what’s coming next—witnessing them exchange vows.

I steal a glance at Josh, who meets my eyes with a sympathetic expression. Despite the discomfort of the situation, his presence offers a sense of solidarity.

The officiant prompts Jeremy and Melissa to begin their vows, and my heart feels heavy as they turn to face each other, their faces illuminated by genuine affection.

Jeremy’s voice fills the room, strong and confident as he begins to speak. “My dearest Melissa, from the moment I met you, I knew that you were the one for me. You bring joy and light into my life, and I am grateful for every moment we share together.”

I listen to Jeremy’s words, feeling a pang of envy at the love and affection he expresses for his fiancée. I can’t help but wonder if I will ever find someone who will love me unconditionally.

When it’s his fiancée’s turn to speak, she meets Jeremy’s gaze with tears shimmering in her eyes. “Jeremy,” she begins, her voice trembling with emotion. “You are my rock, my anchor in a storm. With you, I feel safe and loved, and I am honored to be your wife.”

Watching them exchange vows, a sense of longing washes over me, wishing for a love as genuine and true as theirs—if actually it is. But I push aside my feelings, reminding myself that being here with Josh is all part of the act we’re playing.

As the rehearsal wraps up, I feel a sense of overwhelming relief wash over me. The tension in the air seems to dissipate as the bride and groom-to-be exchange their vows, and I find myself exhaling a breath I didn’t realize I was holding.

I decide to slip away for a moment to catch my breath and prepare myself mentally for the next events. I excuse myself quietly, slipping out of the room and making my way down the hallway toward the restroom.

Just as I’m about to push open the door, I collide with someone, nearly stumbling backward in surprise. My heart skips a beat as I realize it’s Jeremy, his expression unreadable as he looks down at me.

“Andrea,” he says, his voice low and gravelly. “I didn’t expect to see you here.”

I swallow hard, trying to maintain my composure despite the sudden surge of anxiety that courses through me. “I…uh…just needed a moment,” I stammer, my voice unable to hide my discomfort.

Jeremy’s gaze pierces down at me, his eyes narrowing as if trying to read my thoughts. “Is it true?” he asks abruptly, taking a step closer until he’s towering over me.

I try to side-step him, my heart pounding in my chest as I feel his presence looming over me. “Is what true?” I reply, my voice trembling with uncertainty.

But Jeremy doesn’t back down, his gaze intense as he continues to scrutinize me. “Are you really dating Josh?” he presses, his voice laced with suspicion.

I feel a knot form in my stomach as I realize where this conversation is heading. “Yes, we are. Why are you asking?” I can’t hear anything above the pounding of my heart.

Jeremy’s expression darkens, his jaw tightening as he takes another step closer, effectively trapping me against the wall. “Are you sure? Because something seems off.” he murmurs, his voice barely a whisper.

Before I can react, Josh appears around the corner, his brow furrowed in concern as he takes in the scene before him. “Is everything okay?” he asks, his voice filled with apprehension.

Jeremy’s demeanor shifts instantly, his expression returning to its usual nonchalant facade. “Everything’s fine,” he replies curtly, brushing past Josh without a second glance.

I watch in stunned silence as Jeremy disappears down the hallway, leaving me standing there in a state of shock. Josh turns to me, his eyes searching mine for answers.

“What was that all about?” he asks, his voice tinged with concern.

I shake my head, trying to push aside the lingering sense of unease that clings to me. “I honestly don’t know,” I reply, forcing a smile despite the turmoil raging inside me.

But Josh doesn’t seem convinced, his gaze piercing through me as if trying to unravel the truth. “Andrea, you can tell me anything. You know that, right?” he says softly, reaching out to gently cup my cheek.

I nod, feeling a surge of gratitude wash over me at his words. “I know, Josh,” I reply, my voice tinged with emotion.

Standing there in the dimly lit hallway, I can’t help but feel a sense of relief wash over me.

As Josh stands before me, his gaze continues to search mine waiting for answers, I take a deep breath, steeling myself to tell him about the unsettling encounter with Jeremy.

“Jeremy—he asked me if we were really dating,” I confess, my voice trembling slightly with apprehension.

For a moment, there’s a flicker of surprise in Josh’s eyes before a small smile lifts the corners of his lips. “He did, did he?” Josh chuckles softly, the sound comforting in its familiarity. “Well, let’s not keep the others waiting. I heard there’s one last thing to do for the rehearsal…practice the dance.”

I nod in agreement, grateful for Josh’s easy dismissal of the situation. Pushing aside the lingering unease, I follow him back down the hallway, the weight of Jeremy’s questioning still heavy on my mind.

As we rejoin the rest of the wedding party, I can’t shake the anxiety that lingers. I find myself struggling to pay attention to the wedding planner’s instructions; my mind consumed with worry and uncertainty.

I glance over at Josh; my heart skips a beat at the sight of the determination etched on his face. “Hey, it’s okay. We’ll get through this,” he whispers, reaching out to squeeze my hand gently.

But just as I’m about to acknowledge his words of encouragement, disaster strikes. I catch Jeremy’s eyes on me, and in my panic, I accidentally step on Josh’s foot, causing him to yelp in pain.

The room falls silent as all eyes turn to us, and I feel my face flush with embarrassment as I struggle to regain my composure.

I shoot Josh an apologetic glance, my cheeks flushed with embarrassment. “I’m so sorry, Josh. I didn’t mean to,” I whisper, my voice filled with regret.

Josh shakes his head. “It’s okay, Andrea. It was just an accident,” he replies, forcing a smile despite the pain that shoots through his foot.

As the rehearsal finally comes to an end, I can’t help but feel a sense of relief wash over me. Despite the awkwardness and embarrassment of the past hour, we made it through in one piece.

Josh and I make our way back to my apartment, I know that no matter what challenges the ceremony will bring, we are one day closer to this being over.
