17. Andrea
My mind racing with a million different thoughts, I feel a surge of panic wash over me. Melissa’s words echo in my ears, her insistence on making Josh and I promise to always be there for each other haunting me as I struggle to make sense of the situation. We hurry down the hallway to find Melissa, and I can’t shake the feeling that the events of today are far from over.
I glance down at the screen to see Tanya’s name flashing, and a pang of guilt washes over me. Josh and I haven’t had a chance to tell Tanya we made it.
With a sigh, I press the answer button and hold the phone to my ear. “Hey, Tanya,” I say, trying to keep the tremor out of my voice.
“Andrea, what’s up!” Tanya exclaims, her voice filled with excitement. “I’ve been trying to get a hold of you and Josh since last night. Where have you been?”
I bite my lip, unsure of how to respond. “We’ve just been really busy and the car had issues last night,” I say evasively, not wanting to get into the details.
There’s a pause on the other end of the line, and I can sense Tanya’s confusion. “Is everything okay? You sound kind of...off,” she says, her voice laced with concern.
I glance around the empty hallway, my mind racing with thoughts of Melissa and Jeremy and everything else that’s been happening. “Yeah, everything’s…. Well, t’s just not really the best time to talk. I’ll have to catch you up later,” I reply, my voice tinged with regret.
Tanya’s tone softens, and I can hear the concern in her voice. “Okay, I understand. Just know that I’m here for you if you need anything, okay?” she says, her voice filled with sincerity.
I nod, grateful for her understanding. “Thanks, Tanya. I’ll call you back as soon as I can, I promise,” I say, hoping to reassure her.
With that, I end the call and slip the phone back into my pocket, my mind still reeling from everything that’s happened.
“Josh, stay right here. I need to go check on Melissa,” I say, my voice barely above a whisper as I turn to leave.
He nods in understanding, his eyes filled with concern. “Go ahead, I’ll be here,” he assures me, his voice steady and reassuring.
I make my way through the crowd, my heart pounding in my chest as I search for Melissa. Panic threatens to consume me as I frantically scan the room, searching for any sign of her.
And then, finally, I see her standing close to a window in one of the guest rooms, her shoulders slumped, and her face streaked with tears. My heart breaks at the sight of her pain, and I rush to her side without hesitation.
“Melissa, what’s wrong?” I ask, my voice filled with genuine concern as I wrap my arms around her.
She collapses into my embrace, her sobs wracking her body as she struggles to find the words to explain. “I don’t know what I did wrong, Andrea. I thought everything was perfect, and now...now it’s all falling apart,” she cries, her voice muffled against my shoulder.
I hold her close, my heart aching for her pain. “Shh, it’s okay. Everything’s going to be okay,” I whisper, my voice filled with reassurance.
I gently stroke her hair, trying to soothe her as best I can. “You’re strong, Melissa. You can get through this, I know you can,” I say, my voice filled with conviction.
Melissa sniffles, her tears beginning to subside as she leans into my touch. “Do you really think so?” she asks, her voice tentative.
I nod, my heart swelling with pride. “I know so. You’re a fighter, Melissa. Don’t let this setback define you. You’re capable of so much more than you realize,” I say, my voice filled with encouragement.
After what feels like an eternity, Melissa finally pulls away from me, her eyes red-rimmed but filled with determination. “Thank you, Andrea. I needed to hear that,” she says, her voice stronger than before.
I smile at her, my heart filled with admiration. “Anytime, Melissa.”
With a final hug, I leave Melissa to collect herself, knowing that she’ll be okay. But as I make my way back to where I left Josh, a sense of foreboding washes over me, a feeling that something is about to go horribly wrong.
And as I walk into the room where I left Josh, my worst fears are realized.
Jeremy is standing there, his eyes fixed on me with an intensity that sends shivers down my spine. “Andrea, we need to talk,” he says, his voice urgent.
I freeze in place, my heart pounding in my chest as I struggle to process what’s happening. “Jeremy, what is all this about, why is your wedding canceled?” I ask, my voice barely above a whisper.
He steps closer to me, his gaze never leaving mine. “I came to tell you something. Something important, it’s you,” he says, his voice filled with emotion.
I take a step back, my instincts screaming at me to run. “Excuse me? Jeremy, what do you mean ‘it’s me?’” I say, my voice trembling with fear.
But Jeremy isn’t deterred. He takes another step closer, his eyes blazing with intensity. “Andrea, I need to tell you something before it’s too late,” he insists, his voice pleading.
As Jeremy’s voice breaks the silence, his words carry a weight that I never expected. “Andrea,” he begins, his voice trembling with emotion, “you need to know something. Something that I should have said a long time ago.”
I turn to face him, my heart pounding in my chest as I wait for him to continue. His eyes meet mine, and I can see the turmoil swirling within them, a mixture of longing and regret.
“I’ve loved you for as long as I can remember,” he confesses, his voice barely above a whisper. “Ever since high school, I’ve had feelings for you, but I was too afraid to tell you, too afraid of what others might say.”
His words hang in the air, heavy with meaning, and I feel a lump form in my throat as I struggle to process the enormity of what he’s saying.
“I’ve watched you from afar all these years, watching you. Wishing I had said ‘yes’ when you asked me to be your Valentine that day. Now I see you with Josh and wish it was me by your side,” he continues, his voice filled with a bitterness that cuts to the bone. “I’ve hated seeing you with him, knowing that I could never have what he has.”
I can feel the tears stinging my eyes as I listen to his confession, the weight of his words pressing down on me like a lead weight.
“I know I’m probably too late, that you’ve moved on and found happiness with him. I see how you look at him. It’s how you used to look at me,” he says, his voice tinged with resignation. “But I had to tell you, Andrea. I had to get it off my chest, to finally admit the truth.”
As Jeremy’s words hang heavy in the air, I feel like the ground beneath me is shifting, the foundation of my reality crumbling beneath my feet. I stumble backward, my mind racing as I try to process the magnitude of what he’s just confessed.
Without a word, I turn and flee, desperate to escape the suffocating weight of Jeremy’s declaration. I stumble into the nearest restroom, collapsing against the door as I try to catch my breath.
Alone in the bathroom, I let out a shaky breath, my hands trembling as I press them to my temples. What on earth is going on? Why now, of all times, has Jeremy chosen to tell me he has feelings for me?
And more importantly, what am I supposed to do about it?
My mind whirls with questions, doubts and fears swirling around me like a tempest. I close my eyes, willing myself to find some semblance of clarity amidst the chaos.
But try as I might, I can’t shake the feeling of unease that lingers in the pit of my stomach. Jeremy’s confession has thrown everything into disarray, casting doubt on everything I thought I knew about myself and my feelings.
And then, like a bolt of lightning, it hits me.
It doesn’t matter. I still love Josh.
The realization crashes over me with all the force of a tidal wave, leaving me gasping for air. In that moment, I understand with a sudden and startling clarity that my heart has always belonged to him, and him alone.
But even as the truth settles over me like a comforting blanket, I can’t shake the feeling of guilt that gnaws at the edges of my consciousness. Guilt for the confusion and pain that Melissa is feeling.
I press a hand to my chest, feeling the steady thrum of my heartbeat beneath my fingertips. With each pulse, I’m reminded of the depth of my feelings for Josh, of the undeniable connection that binds us together.
And in that moment, I know what I have to do.
With a newfound sense of determination, I push aside my doubts and fears, steeling myself for the challenges that lie ahead. I won’t let Jeremy’s confession derail me, won’t let it overshadow the love that burns bright and true within me.
For I know now, with a certainty that defies explanation, that my heart belongs to Josh. And no matter what obstacles may come our way, I will fight for our love with every fiber of my being.
With a deep breath, I straighten my shoulders, ready to face whatever comes next. And as I step out of the restroom and back into the world beyond, I do so with a newfound sense of purpose and resolve.
