Aiden #3
Bailey is just about to respond when a nurse in pink scrubs comes out and calls her name.
We get up and follow her in the back. She introduces herself as Margo, and asks Bailey to step on the scale after following her through a door and into another hallway.
After she has gotten her height and weight we are led to an examination room.
There is an ultrasound machine in the room, which gets me excited for the idea of seeing our Little Bear.
Margo asks Bailey to sit on the exam table and then takes her vitals and asks how she is feeling.
“I’ve been crazy nauseous this week, and had a few cravings here and there. Mostly, I’m just crazy tired. Though I don’t know if that’s a pregnancy thing or the stress that has come in these last couple of weeks since finding out about the pregnancy.” Bailey responds.
“Well, your blood pressure is a bit higher than we would like, which could be due to the stress or could be pregnancy related hypertension. We will want to keep an eye on that going forward. After the doctor comes in to see you, and we get your ultrasound done, I’ll pop back in to check it again.
I’m not sure what Dr. Richards will suggest, but if it ends up being high when I take it again, we may have you get a blood pressure cuff for at home, just so we can keep an eye on it throughout the day.
She will make the final decision on that though, and go over everything with you.
You can get a cuff pretty cheap off of , I’ll send you a message in the portal with a link to the best, most accurate ones we have found. Any budget?” She asks.
“No, just whatever is going to give her an accurate reading at home.” I say before Bailey can say anything. I will buy whatever the doctor thinks she needs.
“Perfect, are you taking prenatal vitamins?” Margo asks.
“No, I wasn’t sure which ones were the best. Could you add a recommendation for those in the message about the blood pressure cuff?” Bailey responds, sheepishly. She doesn’t want to be a burden on anyone, but she also wants the best for Little Bear.
“Absolutely!” Margo asks a few questions about Bailey’s medical history before turning to me. “Alright Dad, I have a few questions about your medical history.”
“Oh shit! Um…I’m not actually the father of this baby. Do we need the father’s medical history?” I ask, shocked. I hadn’t even thought about that, or how me being here would look. Not that the assumption bothers me one bit, let everyone in their mother think that this baby is mine.
Margo’s eyes go wide, “I’m so sorry, I shouldn’t have assumed. It would be helpful to have his information if we can get it, just so we know if we need to look out for anything, but if it’s not possible it’s not the end of the world.”
“We can try, but it might be difficult. He doesn’t want to be involved.” Tears are forming in Bailey’s eyes, and not for the first time, I want to kill Douchebag Daniel for putting her in this position.
“I’ll take care of it Blue, I can have the lawyers get it from him when they draw up the papers he asked for.
It might be nice to have them anyway, so we know what to look for in the future as well.
Don’t worry about this right now. We’ve got this.
Little Bear is going to be perfect.” I reach out and grab her hand and give it a small squeeze.
“Alright you two, that’s all the questions I have, I will send Dr. Richards in here to do your ultrasound and exam.
Bailey will you undress from the waist down and drape that paper over your lap for us?
Because it’s so early in your pregnancy she will have to do a transvaginal ultrasound, not an abdominal one, so we need everything off.
” Margo says before standing and exiting the room.
I squeeze her hand then step out of the room to give her some privacy while she undresses.
Me: Hey momma, Can we ask the lawyers to get Daniel’s medical records from him for the baby? We are at Blue’s first appt and they asked me about my medical history when they assumed I was dad. I said we would try and get it. It would probably be good to have it for the future anyway.
Momma: Of course baby, anything she needs. Bet that was awkward.
Me: I didn’t even think about how it would look, me coming to the appt. When she asked I was like “Shit!”
Momma: Aiden Matthew, you better watch your language! I’m glad you’re there, even if it was weird. You’re such a good man, son.
Me: Thanks Momma. I wouldn’t be anywhere else.
Momma: You ever gonna tell that girl you’re in love with her?
No one but my mom outright calls me out on the fact that I’m hopelessly in love with my best friend. They all just pretend like they don’t know. Everyone but Momma.
Me: I don’t know what you’re talking about…
Momma: Ya know, you can lie to everyone else, but you can’t lie to your momma.
Me: Maybe someday, Momma. Now isn’t the time to tell her. She has too much shit going on in her life. She doesn’t need me swooping in and changing our relationship. I’ve loved her since the day I met her, I can wait a while longer. I would wait forever for her.
Momma: That right there is the reason why you should say something. There will never be the perfect time. Life will continue to get in the way, and there will always be some excuse to stop you from taking that leap, if you let it. You deserve to be happy, honey. Just tell her.
Me: I’ll think about it.
Momma: Tell her you’re in love with her before it’s too late.
