1. The Weight of a Name #2

He kisses me. It's not gentle. It's not kind.

It's a brutal, claiming crush of lips and teeth, a kiss that’s a punishment and a promise all at once, meant to remind me of the lines he's drawn and the world he owns.

It leaves no room for doubt, only the metallic tang of blood where his teeth have grazed my lip.

I let him push me, my back slamming against the old oak bookshelf.

The carved spines of leather-bound first editions dig into my skin through the thin silk of my dress, a constellation of pressure points.

His hand is at my throat, fingers wrapping around the column of my neck with practiced familiarity.

He doesn't squeeze—not yet. It’s a promise, a warning.

"Fight me," he growls against my mouth, his voice a low vibration that travels straight through my body. "I want to feel you fight."

So I do.

I shove at his chest, my nails raking across the fine linen of his shirt.

I twist my head away, trying to bite the hand that holds my jaw, and a spark of something dark ignites in his eyes.

He loves this, the pretense of resistance.

It’s the thrill of the hunt for him, and the thrill of being caught for me.

My reward for the struggle is a sharp, stinging slap to my face, snapping my head to the side.

It doesn't hurt as much as it shocks me, sending a jolt of heat straight to my core.

He grabs a fistful of my hair at the crown of my head, a possessive, controlling grip, and yanks my head back, exposing the vulnerable column of my throat.

He looks at it like he's deciding where to bite.

His other hand finds the hem of my dress, bunching the silk up around my waist. Cool air hits my exposed skin just before his hand does.

No preamble, no teasing. Just a blunt, searching pressure, his fingers finding me slick and ready, betraying every ounce of my supposed resistance.

A low, approving sound rumbles in his chest.

"See?" he murmurs, his voice a quiet, possessive taunt. "Your body knows what it wants, even if your mouth doesn't."

He doesn't wait. Two fingers are inside me without warning, a sudden, welcome intrusion.

I gasp, my back arching against the bookshelf, and he uses the grip on my hair to hold me steady, to keep me from squirming away.

He sets a punishing rhythm, rough and demanding, his thumb circling my clit in a way that is almost cruel in its precision.

I can feel the pressure building, a coil tightening deep in my belly, and I bite my lip to keep from crying out.

"Not yet," he says, a command, as if he can read my body's trajectory. His fingers slide out, and he brings his hand down in a flat, sharp slap against my wet, aching pussy. The shock of it, the sting, the absolute dominance of the act, makes me gasp, my body jolting. He does it again, and again, each smack sending a wave of electric, pained pleasure through me. I’m a mess, a trembling, wet contradiction in his grasp.

I try to twist away, to create space, but he only tightens his grip on my hair. He spins me around, pressing my chest flat against the bookshelf, my cheek scraping against the spines of old encyclopedias. My hands are splayed out against the wood, trapped.

His hand comes down on my bare ass, the crack echoing in the silent library. The sting is immediate and perfect, blooming across my skin. He smacks me again, and again, alternating cheeks, each one driving the breath from my lungs and a moan from my throat.

"Look at you," he hisses, his voice thick with desire. "Taking this like you were made for it. You love this, don't you? You love being punished."

I can only manage a choked sob in response, a sound of pure, unadulterated need.

His fingers find me from behind, two of them thrusting back inside, hitting a spot that makes stars burst behind my eyelids. He fucks me with his hand, brutal and relentless, his other hand grabbing a fistful of my hair and using it to pull my head back.

"Tell me," he demands, his breath hot against my ear. "Tell me who you belong to."

My body is trembling on the edge of a cliff.

The pain, the pleasure, the degradation, the dominance—it's a perfect, agonizing symphony.

A war rages inside me: the part of me that needs to submit and the part of him that thrives on making me ask for it.

I press my hips back against his hand, a silent plea.

"Say it," he growls, his voice a low, dangerous command. He pulls his fingers out, leaving me achingly empty, and the loss is a physical ache.

"Say. It." His hand is at my throat again, a warning. He’s not stopping, not giving me the release I’m so close to.

This is the moment. The climax of our little war. He wants my surrender. But my surrender is not his victory; it’s his reward.

A raw, guttural sound escapes my throat. "You," I gasp. "I'm yours. Just... please."

It's the only concession he needs. A deep, possessive, satisfied groan rumbles from his chest. My answer, my surrender, is his ignition.

The library is silent, and in the silence, I feel his fingers between my thighs one last time.

He doesn't ask. He takes. The plunge of two long, thick fingers knocks a breathless cry from my lungs.

My forehead is pressed to the wood, my fingers scrabbling against the smooth surface as he curls them against that spot inside me, a brutal, perfect pressure.

His thumb finds my clit and presses down, rubbing in tight, merciless circles.

I am a vessel of pure sensation, my body no longer my own.

In the midst of this assault, his hand leaves the throttle of my throat, only to wrap itself in a new fistful of my hair, yanking my head back once more.

"No, not for me," he growls, his voice a low, guttural command.

"For me. You fight and you take it. Now you take everything.

" He slaps my clit once, then twice, the sharp sting amplifying the unbearable pressure building inside me.

"The words," he commands, his breath hot and ragged against my ear. "Say them like you mean them. One more time."

"Yours," I choke out, the word a broken plea. "I'm yours."

"Beg for it."

"Please," I sob, the word torn from the deepest part of me. "Please. I need it. Need you."

The words unlock something in him. A final, guttural sound of possession rumbles in his chest, and he leans his full weight against me, pinning me to the shelf. "Then take it."

He presses his hand hard between my thighs, his palm cupping me, his fingers buried deep.

It’s not a question, it’s a demand, and my body finally obeys.

The orgasm crashes over me like a wave of fire and ice, white-hot and shocking.

I sob, the sound muffled against the leather and paper.

My body convulses, bearing down on his hand, a silent, perfect surrender.

He holds me there, pinned and trembling, riding out the waves of my climax until my whimpers turn into quiet, ragged breaths.

He slowly pulls his hand away, and I feel a trickle of wetness slide down my thigh.

He doesn't say anything. He just straightens his clothes, adjusts his collar, and walks out of the room without looking back.

The soft click of the door closing is the only sound, a period at the end of a brutal sentence.

I stand there for a long time, my hands pressed against the bookshelf, my body shaking.

My heart is a wild drum against my ribs.

My skin is hot and marked. The sting on my ass is a perfect, throbbing brand.

I feel used. I feel owned. And in the echoing silence of the library, surrounded by stories of love and loss and conquest, I feel utterly, completely alive.

The greenhouse is cold.

It's always cold in winter, even with the heating system that cost more than the diner I used to work at.

The glass walls let in the grey light but hold none of the warmth.

The orchids are still blooming, though—Gabriel's mother's orchids—their petals pale and perfect and utterly indifferent to the family falling apart around them.

Gabriel is sitting on the bench in the corner. His head is bowed, his hands clasped in his lap. He doesn't look up when I enter. He doesn't need to.

"I know it's you," he says. "You're the only one who comes here."

"Gabriel..."

"I'm fine."

"You're not fine." I sit beside him. I don't touch him. I don't know if he wants to be touched right now. "You're never fine."

He laughs. It's a broken sound, hollow and raw. "That's not fair."

"Life isn't fair." I pause. "Isn't that what you told me?"

"I told you a lot of things." He finally looks up. His eyes are red-rimmed, his face pale. He looks exhausted in a way that goes deeper than lack of sleep. "I told you I was going to save you. I told you I was going to be a doctor. I told you I was going to get out of this family."

"Those weren't lies."

"Weren't they?" He shakes his head. "I'm still here. I'm still in this house, still trapped in this life, still playing the part of the good son while my father and brother tear each other apart. And you—" He stops. Swallows. "You're still letting them use you."
