CHAPTER FORTY-EIGHT A Different Kind of Date
Maya met Julian Price at a museum fundraiser.
He was forty, a documentary photographer with laugh lines around his eyes and a habit of asking questions he genuinely wanted answered.
He did not remind her of Andre. He did not remind her of Jalen either. That alone felt new.Their first date was coffee.Maya almost canceled because coffee felt too ordinary
after years of relationships loaded with symbolism. Then she caught herself.Ordinary was not the enemy.Julian arrived on time, wearing a navy jacket and
carrying a book he had promised to lend her after they met at the fundraiser.
"You actually remembered," Maya said."I said I would.
"The simple answer made her smile. They talked for two hours. Not about exes. Not about trauma. Not about whether the universe had brought them together. They talked about art, bad airport food, Maya's belief that every office should have a couch, Julian's obsession with photographing old movie theaters, and the fact that both of them hated people who clapped when airplanes landed. When he walked her to her car, he did not lean in immediately.
"Can I kiss you?" he asked.Maya laughed softly.
"You can."The kiss was warm.Nice.Not electric.Maya drove home without dissecting it.That was new too.She did not compare Julian's hands to Andre's or his voice to Jalen's.
She did not decide whether the kiss meant future. It meant she had kissed a man she liked after a good date.Nothing more was required. They saw each other again the following week. And the week after that. When Julian canceled their fourth date because his sister had been admitted to the hospital with appendicitis, Maya noticed a flicker of old panic. Here it comes, a voice inside her whispered.
The excuse. The change. Then Julian called from the hospital waiting room.
"I know this sounds terrible," he said, "but can we reschedule?
""Your sister is having surgery. You don't need to explain.
""I know. I just didn't want you thinking I disappeared.
"Maya went quiet."Maya?""I'm here.""You okay?
"She smiled."Yeah. I'm just noticing something.
""Good something?""I think so."After they hung up, Maya sat at her desk and let herself feel the difference between reassurance offered freely and reassurance extracted after conflict. She did not decide Julian was the one.She had retired that title. For now, he was a good man she was getting to know. That was enough.
