Years drifted by, each one gentler than the last.
The palace gardens grew lush with moonflowers and rare spirit trees, their blossoms a testament to the world that Cang Yan and Yue Lian had helped heal.
The Demon Realm, once a place of wary peace, now flourished with festivals, music, and laughter that spilled from the palace into the villages and wild hills beyond.
In the mornings, Yue Lian tended the gardens with her daughter, an impish child with Cang Yan's eyes and hair that shimmered like moonlight.
The little girl darted among the fox twins, who had taken it upon themselves to be her tutors in mischief and wisdom.
Zheng Yu, as ever, played the role of doting uncle, teaching her to climb trees and to bargain at the market without ever quite getting caught.
Cang Yan ruled with a steady hand, but his heart was lighter than anyone remembered.
Though the blue fire still glowed within him, it was no longer a burden; it was the strength he drew upon to protect his people and his family.
Sometimes, when dusk fell, he would find Yue Lian on the highest balcony, their daughter curled in her lap, and sit beside them in the hush between day and night.
Their son, a few years younger, was all energy and wild spirit, quick to laugh, quick to scowl, and already showing signs of both his parents' gifts.
When he wasn't chasing the fox twins through the halls, he was pestering his father for stories of old battles or asking his mother to teach him the secrets of the moon.
There were still challenges, border disputes, old wounds that needed time to heal, and the occasional storm sent by a restless immortal. But now, Cang Yan and Yue Lian faced them together, their bond a shield and a promise to the realm.
On the night of the Moon Festival, the palace was filled with light and song. Lanterns drifted into the sky, each carrying a wish. The children squealed as the fox twins performed their latest pranks, and Zheng Yu led a chorus of laughter that echoed into the stars.
Later, when the festivities faded and the world grew quiet, Yue Lian and Cang Yan slipped out to the gardens. Moonlight bathed the flowers in silver, and the air was fragrant with night-blooming jasmine.
Cang Yan wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close. "Do you ever regret it?" he asked softly. "Choosing both this world and me?"
She leaned into him, her lips brushing his ear. "Never. My duty is the moon, my joy is this life, and my heart is yours. Every night I see our children's dreams, I know we chose well."
He pressed a kiss to her brow, and for a moment, the world was perfectly still.
Above, the moon and stars bore witness. Below, in the palace and the villages, laughter and song promised that peace had come, hard-won, but true.
And so, the Moon Goddess and the Demon Lord reigned in light and love, their story a legend whispered to children and sung at every festival:
That happiness is not found in choosing between love and duty, but in daring to hold both fiercely and forever.
