Chapter 4 Wrong Identification

Su Meiyue and Liao Wanru looked shocked at the same time.

Dou Hongfei quickly rejected the idea.

"It has to be her daughter! We are divorced, but I still run into them sometimes. Her daughter wore this exact outfit just a few days ago. I would not get it wrong."

His words reminded me.

I had bought Yingying an outfit identical to the one on the body.

The clothes were expensive. I bought a knockoff instead of the real version. Everything matched except the material and the feel.

No wonder Dou Hongfei made the mistake.

The officer turned to me.

"Ms. Su, what do you think?"

I explained, "This is really not my daughter!"

Dou Hongfei cut in.

"If this is not your daughter, then who is it?"

"How would I know?"

I felt annoyed just looking at him. My tone came out sharp.

Everyone else looked confused except me.

The officer asked again.

"Ms. Su, can we see your daughter?"

"Of course. I need to go home and pick her up."

"All right. Your colleague will drive you back."

Soon a police car took me home.

"Mom."

The door opened. Yingying saw me and ran into my arms.

"Baby, you are so good!"

I looked at the officers behind me.

"Now you believe my daughter is fine!"

The officer spoke seriously.

"We believe you. We are very glad your daughter is safe. I wish you and your daughter good health!"

"Please bring the child back to the station with us."

"All right."

Yingying had just recovered. I went inside, grabbed a jacket for her, and took her back to the station.

This time Dou Hongfei and Liao Wanru looked even more surprised.

Their pupils widened.

Dou Hongfei said, "This girl really did not die. Now we have a problem. Who did we hit?"

Liao Wanru looked uneasy.

"I do not know! Will I go to jail? Husband, I do not want to go to jail."

The evidence was clear. There was no way out.

They admitted the mistake and offered compensation, but the real parents could not be found. A private settlement was impossible.

Liao Wanru had to serve time.

In the end she was sentenced to two years.

She was the main person responsible. Her poor driving skills caused the girl's death.

Dou Hongfei hated me after that. He came to bother me every day.

He could not find the girl's family and felt frustrated.

If the family had written a letter of understanding and accepted compensation, Liao Wanru would not have gone to jail.

Now he could not find anyone and kept pestering me instead.

"Do you have a problem with your brain? The girl is not my daughter. What is the point of bothering me every day?"

"You are useless. You only know how to bully the two of us."

"If you want to know the girl's background, there are many ways. Why not ask someone at the school?"

Dou Hongfei looked enlightened.

"You are right. Why did I not think of that?"

He tried to leave. This time it was not easy. He had smashed things at my place three times already. I stopped him.

I grabbed his clothes.

"Pay up. You are not leaving until you pay."

Dou Hongfei had no choice. He gave in for the first time.

"Fine, I will pay. You poor thing. You are just waiting for this money to survive. You and your daughter are both broke."

I slapped him hard across the face.

He could insult me. He could not insult my daughter.

He had crossed the line too many times.

Dou Hongfei looked stunned.

"You dare hit me? I will make sure you cannot stay in this area."

"Try it!"

Anyone could talk tough. Even a rabbit would bite when pushed.

"I have things to do. I will not argue with you today."

Dou Hongfei rubbed his swollen face and left.

At the same time, news came that someone had reported a missing child.
