Chapter 5 The Real Victim
After hearing the news, I went to find out the truth.
The girl's identity finally came out.
She attended the same school as Yingying but in a different grade. Their classes were next to each other.
That afternoon she sneaked out to buy something and ran into Liao Wanru, who had just gotten her license and was not skilled yet. Liao Wanru failed to brake in time and the girl died.
At first Dou Hongfei and Liao Wanru thought she was my Yingying from her appearance.
They sat in the car calmly discussing what to do.
Only after they finished did they call me.
They thought it was a simple traffic accident that could be settled with money.
They never expected the dead girl was not my Yingying.
At the station they panicked.
Liao Wanru held Dou Hongfei's hand and begged.
"Husband, you have to use your connections to save me."
Dou Hongfei promised.
Then he wasted time coming after me.
He had no idea what to do and ran around like a headless fly.
I remembered how they had looked down on us over the years. Resentment rose in my chest.
This accident felt like their karma.
Soon the couple came out of the station.
They cried hard.
"Officer, that is my daughter. We do not agree to a private settlement. We only want the killer brought to justice."
The girl's father hit his own chest in pain.
"Officer, you must give us justice. I heard there were two people in the car. You cannot let the other one go either."
I heard the officer sigh.
"That may not be possible. The car belongs to his wife and she was driving. She is the main person responsible."
"Her husband was only sitting beside her. It is hard to assign blame to him."
"Then I want his information. Can I meet him?"
The officer hesitated. The couple started crying again.
"We sent our daughter off while we are still alive. In the end we do not even know what the killers look like. Is there any justice left?"
"Officer, just let us see him. We only want to see him."
The officer looked moved. He had worried they would act out, but their pain was too much to bear. He finally agreed with a troubled expression.
"All right. But you must promise not to do anything extreme."
"We will not. We will not."
The girl's father agreed quickly, but his eyes showed deep hatred.
