Chapter 7 I Laughed as I Opened the Door
I wasn't interested in their drama anymore.
I was about to leave when Dou Hongfei spotted me.
He couldn't resist a fresh round of mockery.
"Oh, watching the show here. You must be so pleased right now."
"Seeing us suffer, your heart must be thrilled."
It was hard to deny the satisfaction I felt watching their downfall.
But if that satisfaction required sacrificing lives, I preferred not to have it.
Besides, how many years would they actually get for killing someone? Only two at most.
If they showed remorse, they could still get a reduced sentence. What comfort could that possibly bring to the dead or the living?
I suspected that was why the little girl's parents couldn't let it go.
Still, they had money. I waited to see Dou Hongfei get dealt with.
I shot back.
"You think everyone is as cold-blooded and heartless as you."
"Back then, when you thought you'd hit Yingying, you must have been relieved."
"Bad people get what's coming. This is your karma."
"Another word."
He stepped forward, trying to intimidate me.
But at the police station entrance, I wasn't scared.
I pointed at the plaque on the door.
"Think carefully. If you try anything here, you'll walk straight in."
"Or are you two still so in love that you'd rather go in and join your wife?"
His forehead veins bulged with rage.
"Thanks for the reminder. I won't hold it against you. But don't get too cocky. If I can't make it, you never will either."
"Spit."
What an ass.
I spat behind him as he left.
Time to head back for lunch.
I hurried home.
The moment I walked in, I got good news.
It turned out Dou Hongfei's delivery store had closed.
The head office took back the distribution rights.
Dou Hongfei was now frantic, like ants on a hot pan.
His wife was in prison, his store gone. He was living in misery.
The man who never bowed to me had come begging.
"Su Meiyue, open the door. I want to see the child."
Lies. The child wasn't even out of school yet.
I rolled my eyes. I was sick of him.
I didn't even open the door.
He sent another message.
"Su Meiyue, open up. I have something important to talk to you about. Please!"
I replied.
"What is there left to talk about between us? Go back! From now on, stay out of our lives."
"I really have urgent business. Please open the door. If you don't, I'll stay here until the child gets home. I'll carry her back myself."
He was threatening again.
Disgusting.
He kept hammering on the door.
To stop the neighbors from hearing, I finally opened it.
"Spit it out or get out."
"If you dare touch my daughter, I'll kill you."
