O nce the meeting is over, I wait my turn to talk to Mason. Everyone has questions. Everyone is concerned. We should be. We’ve seen what he’s capable of already.
There was a time I thought I truly knew Collin. I spent all of my time with the Mason boys. Mason, who’s never gone by his first name, was always the voice of reason. The one who kept us in line and out of trouble as much as he could. Collin, on the other hand, was the mischievous one. He wasn’t afraid of anything and he wanted the world to know it. They were complete opposites, rarely having anything in common…except me.
Maybe part of me fell a little in love with them both. I loved how safe Mason has always made me feel. How no matter what, I’ve been protected just because he was there. Then there was Collin. He was fun and exciting and it was easy to get swept up in that. I crossed the line with him. Gave him my virginity. The next day, he was gone. No goodbye. Nothing.
When Mason told me he left town, I kept that secret to myself. My heart was broken. All these years I could never convince myself he was dead. I thought he was off living this great life while I was struggling as a single mom and dodging questions about who the father of my child was. A child he never even met.
Skylar once asked me if he was Mason’s son. I told her no, which isn’t a lie. But she isn’t the first who’s mentioned how much Charlie favors him. She’s just got the wrong Mason.
“You good?” Bishop asks.
“Um, yeah. Just want to talk to Mason before I settle in.”
Despite the impending threat, the club voted only for a partial lockdown. Everyone will still do their day-to-day jobs and handle their normal responsibilities. Curfew is at midnight. No exceptions.
“You staying here tonight?”
“Yeah. Don’t want to get Charlie out again.”
Bishop gives me a quick hug. “Go ahead. I’ll send him your way when he’s done.”
I nod, yawning as I head back to the room where Charlie’s sleeping. After Collin attacked our old clubhouse, we rebuilt and made accommodations for everyone. This place is like a fortress. I suppose Mason knew a lockdown was eventually coming. I check on Charlie, who’s still sound asleep on the single and go lay down on the queen bed across the room.
Collin Mason. The Harvester. The father of my son.
What are you planning?
