Mason
I wait until everyone else is settled in before making my way to the room where Davina and Charlie are staying. I knock lightly on the door before easing it open.
Charlie is sound asleep and for a moment, I think Davina is asleep. Then, she quietly asks if I’m okay. This is why she’s my best friend. She understands that I have to hold it together for the club. She also understands that my brother being back is a huge fucking deal.
Pulling the covers back, I climb in behind her and wrap my arms around her waist. She fits perfectly against me. Then again, she always has.
“I never thought I would see Collin again,” she whispers. “I thought…I thought he was never coming back.”
I thought the same thing. Especially after what happened. I’ve never spoken about that night. Collin was gone and he wasn’t coming back. People could believe whatever they wanted. I wanted him to be dead.
“Mason, there’s something I should tell you.”
Davina rolls over to face me. Even though the lights are out, I can see the emotion on her face as she reaches up to touch my cheek.
“Never mind. It’s not important.”
I don’t push her to talk. Our friendship has been rock solid all these years because we understand each other. We have boundaries and we respect them. Of course, when we’re like this, I want to cross those lines. I want to push those boundaries.
I promised myself a long time ago I would never do that. Not because I don’t want to and certainly not because she doesn’t want me to.
But because she chose Collin. All those years ago, she chose him.
I’ll do anything for Davina.
Except be her second choice.
