She poked her head out the office door. "How long? I've got somewhere I need to be."

"We've got a problem," Wrench said.

I was leaning back against the workshop bench, wiping my hands on a rag.

"What sort of problem?"

"Stator failure."

"Huh?"

"Your stator's cooked."

"OK. So replace it. I've got cash."

"It'll be tomorrow before we can get the part."

"It can't be." Her voice tightened. "I need to get into town in the next hour and up north straight after."

"I'll send a prospect out to get the part then."

"Can you get it done this afternoon?"

"I'll make sure I do," Wrench said.

She looked stressed. Not the quiet kind… the kind that sits behind someone's eyes like a caged animal.

"I can give you a ride into town," I offered.

"No problem. I'll get an Uber."

"You get to ride on a real bike."

"You expect me to ride bitch?"

"Now there's a word." Fuck. That just popped right out of my mouth before I could swallow the thought.

She smiled. She actually fucking smiled.

"I'll get my key."

She didn't say no.
