Chapter Sixty

Kat

Iwas moving. And I wasn’t sure why I was moving, because I was SURE that I was sleeping.

And if I was moving while I was sleeping, I knew my body would’ve kicked some ass before I even fully woke up.

I’d trained it that way.

So, why was I moving?

And why was my body happy about it?

I peeked an eye open, finding the garage pitch black around me. I distinctly remembered looking at the time and seeing nine PM, but I didn’t remember another check after that. It must’ve been LATE late for everyone to be gone.

I sleepily figured I should probably check to see if the garage ghostie floating me off into the ether was friend or foe.

I wasn’t entirely sure what I’d do if it was foe.

Because I was so tired. Too tired to fight garage ghosties tonight.

The first level of the mine would take me out in Stardew Valley.

I finally thought I understood passing out and randomly waking up on my doorstep in that game, too.

I shifted slightly, realizing I hadn’t solved my puzzle at all. I turned back toward my ghostie, finding him surprisingly solid and warm.

But then again, even Casper got to be a real boy for a night.

My eyes closed again, and it certainly couldn’t have been ME that chose to do that. Nonsense.

I was laying on something soft. Which was an excellent progression of my night. But my warm ghostie was leaving.

“Casper,” I mumbled, reaching for him. I thought I might’ve heard him laugh. Well, I’M sorry if I called you the wrong name. You didn’t TELL me your name before ghost-napping me.

A warm, delicious-smelling soft something landed on my shoulders where I lay. But even curled up like I was, it didn’t cover all of me. I grumbled. Why was it always so COLD around ghosts? Casper should work on that.

Then something impossibly softER landed over my first warm and soft. I liked that. I liked that an awful lot. I smiled, but then I realized Casper was still gone.

My smile was gone, replaced by a frown. If I had to make a trade, I’d give BOTH of my warm softs for my Casper back.

I needed him. I made a noise that was definitely supposed to be a request but sounded more like a whine.

I thought I heard my Casper say ‘hold on’.

Then my bigger warm soft was shifting, and my head along with it. I felt something I thought I recognized under there. It felt an awful lot like my warm, hard pillow I loved so much.

I rolled over, about to slide my arm around my warm ghostie friend. I somehow knew at the last second to be careful, gentle, and avoid most of his back. I retracted my arm, pulling it between our chests instead.

Because I thought maybe my ghostie was hurt. I didn’t like that. I grumbled and frowned, shoving my face closer as I slipped my leg between his.

It felt like he said something, but I didn’t hear what it was. I pressed a kiss to my ghostie’s chest, feeling like maybe that was a needs-to-be gentle place, too.

He needed someone to keep HIM safe. But I could do that. I could. I’d wake up and keep him safe.

“Keep… safe,” I mumbled. I definitely heard Casper this time.

“You’re safe, my love.”
